This version is a more profound and dark version, with the hatter being a more grounded person with some proper characteristic and emotional traits to him while in the disney version hes just a crazy freak. Long live Tim Burton!

I love that Johnny Depp puts so much thought into his characters, often giving them a background or changing them and making them his own. And that each one of his characters are such different people is so insanely amazing. I can't wait to see this movie.

I love this version of Alice and wonderland. I think that Johnny is amazing with the role of the mad hatter. I get do into this movie that when ever anything bad happens to the hatter I just want to jump though the tv and save him!! I consider the hatter as a brother I never had.
Johnny Depp is the only guys who can pull off wearing eyeliner and a bit of lipstick looking thing and still be sexy :D

The Mad Hatter really is somewhat of a masterpiece... Usually a director will stifle an actor's take on a character to keep him from becoming too complicated. Not so here. Between the two of them, Burton and Depp have created a a character with so many layers, so many nuances, I know personally, I'll be years dissecting him... and then I'll keep watching just to appreciate the genius of his construction.
And I really really really like that. : )
@TessaLoveTH - It refers to the effects of mercury poisoning. Hatters were often exposed to it while treating fur and leathers - usually by a process called "carroting" because very often it turned things a fine shade of orange. Generally it's categorized by memory loss, becoming reclusive, and mood swings.
I love this version of Alice and wonderland and I love Johnny depp as the mad hatter. I think Johnny is amazing with the role of the mad hatter. When I watch the movie I get so into it that I get sad when anything bad happens to the hatter. He's my fave!!!!
Am I the only one who thought that the Hatter kinda seemed to have a thing for Alice through the movie, especially at the end?... The goodbye scene was my favorite part! So sad and yet extremely sweet. ^w^ Johnny Depp is an amazing actor!!

Tim Burton, one of my favourite Directors. I love pretty much all his movies. They're all my type of movies. Simply outstanding.
Watched the movie last night and it was just lovely.
I love his almost Edward Scissorhands smile at 0:57 seconds...... oh god i love him!
johnny depp always plays the most wondrful and wacky characters so well!! he shows emotions and expresses the characters feelings exactly how it is in the original movie or book. as playing edward scissorhands he expressed how shy he was and how he was new to society, as te mad hatter and willy wonka he expressed how crazy they where :D

I doubted Johnny Depp could play they the Hatter as well as Martin Short did and apparently Depp did, as well. I love that he always makes characters his own so you can't compare him to other actors who have had the roll. He never copies what came before him and that's great.

i know he is my movie crush right now. its sooooo cute how they care for eachother just like u sed. i love it wen he says "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" and then alice asks him that and he says "I havent the slightest idea." The term "mad hatter" came when a king wanted to be immortal. The people in the village experimented, and some people that made hats (hatters) tried using mercury, but it made you mad instead. And it killed the king when he digested it.

I think that as aswordsman, the mad hatter would seem unexperienced, swinging it wildly and losing his balance, but he would really be an excelent fighter, and his original style would just look bad. Also, he'd chat and drink tea during the whole time, as if he didn't notice the fight. It'd be called...Hatdancing!

But yes, it´s Tim Burton... he gives Johnny big roles all the time and if the story doesnt suit there, he makes him be the main character however

Finally watched this today in 3d and it was so amazing. I loved it so much more than what i thought i wud. Its a wonderful world to escape into. I love all the characters so much. I bought a MadHatter Johnny Depp T shirt straight after watching the film. Ive read the first book and I defo need to read the second now.

Yes i totally agree with the person before me!!! Its SO clear whats going on between them! Most of all in him. But except that i was soo hoping they find each other in the end, Alice was still a lil bit to young :S Burton need to do a second part!!! Where Alice is a lil bit more older and to be more adult. But what a pity Burton never used to a second part. :(
