I bought the S62 and returned it. I'm sure it did everything great but the screen was just annoyingly small to me... even though it's the biggest watch screen. I went with the Z82 rangefinder and am happy with my decision. The one thing I wish it had was the virtual caddie. That option seems pretty cool. Great review as always!
I wore the S12 for the last two summers. Played 75+ rounds with it and loved everything about it. I just bought the S62 today (on flash sale for $349) because I wanted the heart rate monitor for medical reasons. You really can’t go wrong with any of the 3 models. Great review and comparison, as always. Thanks.
Because of your 3 reviews regarding the Garmin, I purchased the S40 this afternoon from Worldwide Golf Shop (Roger Dunn in CA) for $199!! Taking it out tomorrow for my first round. Upgrading from the Garmin S20 👏🏼
@@LetsPlayThru A fantastic device to record and portray my +8, 80! Tough scoring day, lots of scrambling. Impressed with the S40 after using an S20. Color screen, touch screen, ease of use, and information displayed without exiting and entering menus was delightful. Thanks for helping with my ultimate decision to upgrade👍🏼
Hi Gabe, on this video you mentioned that the S42 gives you a “plays like” distance. However in your review video of the S42 this feature was not mentioned and I cannot find it being mentioned in any review elsewhere either. Could you please confirm? This feature is key in my opinion for the courses I play at. Thanks 😊
Phenomenal review…you rock! Any sense if they work using your glove hand to do the touch screen? I’m left handed, but golf right handed…therefore, I normally wear my watch on my right wrist, but wear my golf glove on my left hand!
A yr late i know but just wanted to touch on a couple points. First off great video, answered a ton of questions to help make informative decision. Thank you!!! Points from garmins websight…and a ton of research. Watches are rated IPX7 which is not waterproof, do NOT take swimming. IPX8 is waterproof. IPX7 is highly water resistent, safe for rain, dishes, shower, ect… S42 does NOT have “plays like” function. Only S62 has that. Both S42 and S62 has phone bluetooth for messages like phone, texts ect…. I should recieve my S42 in mail In 1-2 days. If i find anything i just posted inaccurate i will certainly edit, but the only thing i question is “plays like”, which im 99.9% is correct and S42 does not have.
I actually use my Garmin watch as a everyday work watch and it’s great on golf course. It’s awesome with the app so you can track your stats. Thanks for the great content keep it coming.
Very useful. I will probably go for the S42 as the S62 looks too big for my wrist and I am not sure I will use all the S62 features anyway. Not the least given that my golf game is probably not worthy of the S62 features 🙂
Thanks Gabe. Would love to see you review and perhaps compare the new GolfBuddy Aim W11 to the Garmin S42 and S62. It seems reasonably priced and would love to know your thoughts.
great review Gabe, while you recover from your ankle surgery, maybe you could update and do comparisons across manufacturers, and /or the accuracy of watches V range finders. I am very much old school and rely on what I see and where the pin is and what club can I reach with. I think though the building up of data on how far your really hitting clubs would prove invaluable, especially as most of us fail by under clubbing / over estimating how far we can hit our clubs.
Great review ... these are great watches. I was torn between these and the Shot Scope v3. I chose the Shot Scope mostly due to price and size (small for a GPS golf watch). It also has a handy app that tracks data from your round. But I will say I have played rounds with a guy who uses the S42 and it works extremely well!
I just got the s12 and would like to use it as an everyday watch, but I can’t figure out how to increase the brightness. I can’t see the screen without a sufficient amount of light
great review - as a woman, these are way too big, but i like the features of the 62. would it work all the same, if i took band off, and just had it in my pocket? thanks
@@LetsPlayThru thanks, i contacted them as well. They said the watch has to be on the wrist to work , sadly. I did see the G12 but the reviews don't seem so great. Thanks for your videos!
This is now the third time I’ve watched this video. Played with my brother today, who has the S42. While it’s definitely a nice piece of tech, and while I had seen this video twice before, I was surprised that it didn’t have the course overview. A couple recent large purchases with 5% back on the credit card will make it effectively free to upgrade to the S62. Overall, it will be the better fit for what I’m looking for. Thanks Gabe!
That was a nice and complete comparison review. A lot of my friends have the S42. I have the Z82 but I kinda like the S62. How long does the fully charged battery last? Thanks
Can you review the Garmin S62's swing tempo function and how to use it? I've been trying to find something on youtube that explains the intricacies of how to use the tempo function and what all the numbers mean and I can't find any. Thank you.
I like the S42. It has good battery life (2+ rounds on a single charge) and it tracks all the stats I'm looking for (this reviewer says it can't track stats - just check out other reviews of the S42 and you'll see it can, and very well). One thing I haven't seen with it that's also contrary to this reviewer is that it's fast to acquire the satellite to start the round. I've found just the opposite and I've owned 2 S42s. I've taken to starting the watch in GPS mode as I'm walking from my car to the course, before signing in or warming up. I hate not having my true yardage for my 2nd shot but that's what happens sometimes when I wait until I'm on the first tee to start it up. There's no real downside to starting it earlier due to the great battery life. 15 hours is what Garmin says it can do in GPS mode and that's pretty accurate in my experience over 5 years as an S42 owner.
I love the review of all 3 watches. I am torn between the s62 and s42. As I'm just getting back into golf this year and not playing as much as I would like to, would you suggest the s62 is for someone who plays more regular? That is what is swaying me towards the s42... that and of course the price!
Loved this comparison review as I’ve wanted to look into a new golf gps watch. That S12 was pretty stocked at a great price point. I found on Play Better that they have an S60 option. How does that compare to the S62 you’ve reviewed? Is it basically just no virtual caddie, or are there other large differences? Thanks Gabe.
Great breakdown of each watch. Curious, is the S42 and S62 legal for tournament play, if it's giving Slope (PLAYS LIKE)? To the best of my knowledge, rangefinder, when they are allowed they cannot use the slope function. Just wondering. Anyway great comparison of them all.
Great breakdown of all these cool watches Gabe! I have to say my favorite of the bunch in the S42. I love all the features of the S62 but its probably a little too big for my wrist and most of the features I would never use. The tempo feature thou is dope!
A great informative review of all 3 watches, thanks, am definitely swaying now towards the S62. In regards to the virtual caddy, u mentioned it starts to work after 5 rounds. Does this constantly update on your rounds after this? to take into account u playing better golf or u changing clubs which could impact greater distance do you know? Thanks 👍
Thank you for a great review, Gabe. I want to upgrade my Garmin S20 and in Denmark, the S60 is on sale and now costs the same as the S42. Which would you go for? I like the feature where I can point to the screen to see the exact distance to carry.
I use Hole 19 with my Apple Watch , about 40.00 annually, works great for all I need as I just play each hole for middle of the green as the pin has to be somewhere. Look at all this at annual renewal but see little benefit for a 73 year old golfer with 10 handicap. Appreciate what you do
S42 is all you need. It’s lighter less clunky. The s62 makes you feel like you can leave your brain at home and play. Isn’t part of golf figuring out what you should do yourself?
You got several things wrong about the s42. It has smart notifications just like the s62, it also has auto shot tracking. The 42 also has activity tracking like the s62. Seemed like you downplayed the 42 a lot. I know you have a video playing with the s42 so why not reference that when making this comparison. Glad I didn’t wait for this video before purchasing.
Hey Kody, been thinkimg of getting the s42. Cant seem to find a thorough reviews on the watch. So basic tracking is all on the watch i’m guessing? What about the golf stuff ? Something we potential buyers need to know or things that u might find helpful ? Thanks man
Bad design…back stem gets depressed by golf glove continually during your round and is distracting. Unless you are left handed. How many people care about heart rate?
Golf caddie is a joke. If you need a watch to suggest which club to use, you shouldn’t be playing golf. It’s a total gimmick. Also watch has major issues connecting and software that tracks data. Worked great for 6 months then stopped tracking health data and after a year it has trouble keeping score. To late for me but I would stay away from all the gadgets and just get what you need. A watch that gives you distance with slope.
Yeah. Garmin says metal, they just look similar. Also you messed up a lot of the features for the s42. It doesn’t have playslike distance to calculate for slopes etc. And it has got stat tracking, so it doesn’t need the ct10 for tracking clubs/distances.
That’s what Garmins website says. You also have to manually input with the S62 right? According to them they both have auto shot and stat tracking. The ct10 does select the club automatically. If the S62 did that, it would defeat the purpose of buying the ct10.
The "like" is for 10:20: "I turn all of that off. When I am on the course I wanna play golf". 👍 Seriously, the whole video is excellent.
S42 tracks shots as well without the added sensors. Not sure why so many are saying it doesn’t.
Excellent presentation. Fluid, clear and practical 😊
I just brought a s42 so happy just a great golf watch

Well S42 is much faster. I like the form factor better too. I’d be leaning that way.
thanks for the review...really appreciate the detail
Why is the S60 never compared?? Dang good watch!
Hey, Confirmed with Garmin that there is not a ceramic bezel on the S42. It's metallic.
does the s62 track distances by where you take the next shot or does it calculate your club speed with accelerometers?
From where you take the next shot
Not sure you mentioned the garmin pay, is that just on the s62?
Good call, I did forget that actually. Yes, I think it’s only on S62
Cheers 😄👍🏾
I have a garmin S12. I cannot get it to change holes automatically. Can you help?
I bought the fenix 7s .. it seems to do everything these do and a whole lot more besides for not much more money..
I also saw Amazon also Garman a Garman S60, what does that watch provide ?
The Garmin S 60 is the model before the S62 was released very similar feature set.

Great video !! I’d be honored to take one of those watches off your hands since I don’t think you use three watches each round. Lol. Have a great day!

The S42 tracks shots also. It will ask you which club you hit...

Can you chance the watch face on the watches?
There are 5-10 options yes.
I like my s42 the s62 was to big, the watch is right there, I dont want to screw with a rangefinder
Garmin has great watches, but seems far behind shotscope and arccos on shot-tracking/statistics.
With the S62 it's pretty robust, but of course that's the most costly option. I do think the Arccos tech is probably the best right now.

They have these things in golf that are pretty new... I think they call them caddies maybe?
Golf watch is for golf. I could care less about my heart rate. As long as it's beating I'm fine.
😮 just need functions for golf nothing else don't want a smart watch not scoring etc
