Unlike all playable Lego guitars in the world, Lego microtonal guitar is the first Lego guitar with a fretboard made out of Legos. All you need is a 3D printer and some Lego pieces to have the fretboard ready to be inserted onto a standard guitar neck.

Two years ago when my son Atlas gave me this idea, it was hard to imagine that we would reach this point. I am glad to see that this guitar works well. I hope guitarists who are interested in different tunings will enjoy playing the Lego Microtonal Guitar.

No. Not legotonal. Or legar. Or guito
You can utilize lego colors to indicate scales on the fretboard as well. You should be involved in the mass production of this
Completely agree
Jesterday31 oh yes he must mass produce this !!!!! Would be awesome.
yeah but as big of a corporation they are rather than selling fretboards they'd probably only sell really cheap guitars with the fretboards
@@oatmeal710 well, only Lego can answer that 😉
Unfortunately there is no market for true brilliance. 😕
Me seeing the thumbnail: "wow, what a dumb clickbaity idea"
Me watching people play in the start of the video: "wait, this is brilliant"
@Mr. Faith no. Memes are the DNA of the soul.

@Mr. Faith letters, alphabets, words, punctuation, and grammar are all memes. your move.
@@radio7353 you're defending a pathetic, loser Redditor. What does that make you? Worse.
This is fantastic. As a cellist I have always been frustrated by the tyranny of frets on the guitar and you have come up with an elegant solution to make the tonal systems of different cultures available on one instrument.
A long time ago I had the opportunity to play on an instrument designed by Harry Partch. Are you familiar with his work? If not you should look him up; he also worked with making string instruments capable of playing microtones. He used embedded dots to indicate where the fingers would go, but using Legos is a brilliant and perhaps more user-friendly touch. Congratulations!
Now I’m going to see if one can make a Legos microtonal viola da gamba...
Microtonal Lego Viola de Gamba sounds fantastic! Of course I love Harry Partch's music and his 41-tone Just intonation system. His Genesis of Music is great.
This is the coolest thing ever. The overall presentation was great. And it sounds like the best way for a father and son to bond over music.
I see you everywhere.
My favorite thing about this comment isn't that it more eloquently stated the comment I came down here to make, but the name it came from. This guitar is so awesome that even a putrid abomination recognizes its magnificence.

I mean the idea itself is genius, for teaching it's an amazing tool, I also removed some notes on a xylophone for a student for him to visualize scales and it worked, and the idea of having a modular fretboard is just amazing, no hammering the frets back and forth, just place a piece of fret where you need it, this would be a product I'd buy, any day.
Thanks!
I cant belive something like the adjustable microtone guitar wasnt invented waaaaay earlier. I trade my for one and use for the rest of my life in a hearthbeat.
there was one invented in the 15th century...I think it was a different design but the same concept.
There are fretless instruments. You don't even need to adjust!
@@2Cerealbox you can't play 4-6 note chords on a fretless (except with open strings) and it's very difficult to play said chords with the tuning accuracy that frets provide
Watch the video “History of the Microtonal Guitar”
@@2Cerealbox and even without the issue of chords, playing microtones on a fretless instrument like violin implies that you know the microtonal scale that you want to play. It would probably take you months of listening to music and trying to get used to it, while just moving one fret is way faster and easier. For example, Ben Johnston’s 7th String Quartet implied that the Kepler quartet rehearsed for over a decade to play accurately the intonation (according to that video ua-cam.com/video/IaLwrLRpZ1w/v-deo.html)
Everyone: Ouch! Playing guitar hurts my fingers.
Microtonal guitar: Pathetic.
Nylon doesn't hurt as much as steel especially thick steel strings. Also the action on your guitar may be too high. Typically beginner guitars have terrible action and random strings so beginners will have aching hands and never know that it was just a shit guitar.
Why pathetic?

The potential of learning music theory here can not be understated.
Also Atlas is probably the most badass name ever
Simon Blanjean it's a pretty nice turkish name
hopefully atlas doesnt shrug very often
Yes that’s one of the best names ever
At first I was like "Oh cool, we're gonna hear some microtones" but then we got "This is actually a great way to teach music theory on a guitar and great to learn scales with". Here's to hoping that Lego manages to revolutionise a new way of teaching.
Truly amazing! You've not only made learning scales miles easier, but have opened guitar to cultural options that used to be impossible. And presumably it intonates well up the neck too?
I hope you've patented this! Oh, and well done Atlas, who seems to be making good progress with his playing of an instrument he just revolutionised!
You have a pretty sharp son there...keep encouraging him!
Finally. Only took UA-cam recommendations a full decade to understand what I'm really after.
I'm a contemporary classical composer and guitar teacher who also happens to own half a million LEGO pieces.
This is the best thing ever.
Glad to hear that! Cheers

Since the legos can be arranged in almost any way, and can be made in any color, do you think it could be educational to use them to describe their pitch visually? You could make each scale degree a different color, or outline important harmonies as colored finger shapes, or simply use a different neck color for each fret.
Not sure how useful it would be. Just a thought
Yeah it's as easy as using a different color plastic when printing the frets. This could actually be one of the biggest things in guitar education if the right people hear about it
Good thought
You are right. When my son tried to memorize a song, he told me that instead of memorizing the 7th fret, he knew the location by its color.
Have you already presented this to Lego, to have official pieces made? 😅
but the size of the lego look equal, thus there is an”even temperament” but determined by Lego lol
This is what genius looks like: simple, obvious (once a genius explains it to you, ofc), and to the point. Damn, you could even attach some bump-less LEGO’s and make that guitar fretless 👌🏻 just that easy. Wow! We’re all living in 2020 while this good man here, he be living in 4020 already, no joking! Honestly: excellent idea 😎 this is why I’m subscribed to your channel

@@microtonalguitar THAT'S WHAT I LIKE TO HEAR! [sorry for the all caps, but i was just thinking about how 3d printing and opensource could make this widely available to those who otherwise couldn't afford a musical education]
This would probably require a contract with Lego and this would probably make the whole thing very expensive. Well, that and the facilities needed for larger scale production.
@@bernhardkrickl3567 if its simply a free to download design for people to 3d print themselves then Lego wouldn't have any grounds to sue as there is no profit being made. If anything, Lego would be profiting as people would have to buy the studs in order to build out the fretboard!
@@bernhardkrickl3567 I dunno, I've heard of people 3d printing legos to replace missing ones in sets. They're of standard sizes so it shouldn't be a problem to just go ahead and print a whole bunch of one kind without the logo for one purpose? Besides, I highly doubt this would go into the kind of production resembling an industrial scale. Might be easier for those interested to just download the plans and print it themselves.

just amazing. The ability to teach the actual tuning and sounds from different cultures is not just a great tool for creatives but it will help keep the traditions alive instead of being lost in the kind of approximations we end up with when they're translated to the 12 tone equal temperament system.
