RUNNERS
As a graffiti train writer you are always happy if you don't have to run away from your unfinished piece. If your able to catch your piece running the day after so you can get your traffic photos during rush hour you're even more happy. Our video series called RUNNERS is focused on graffiti on trains and for each episode we will feature actions and traffic videos from a selected writer or team of writers.

The bay area. Grew up on NY subways and shit. Plus all the LA and bay area influenced styles. We all about structure and making it look good. This looks like my lil sister graffiti. And I really don't mean disrespect this is just what it looks like when a person that knows nothing about graffiti paints. I guess I'm also a lil jealous cuz I know me and my crew paint doper than this and we want to smash euro subways haha.

I have a question and I would love if someone answered it. I'm thinking about starting graffiti. However, I'm not good a drawing. Should you know how to draw before learning how to graffiti?

start practice tags and the practice practice pracrice. and more important. read and learn about graff. watch style wars and outher graff documents in youtube

Why didn't the paint freeze when it came out the can
The MTN Speed cans works fine even when it's cold. But people make sure that their cans is warm also when they go out winter time.

Even if you're joking, let me drop some simple science for you to carry with you through your graff career. Unless labeled as water-based on the can, all spray paint is oil/alkyd based paint. (Side note...leaving water-based paint (roll/bucket/house paint) outside in freezing temps will separate the paint solids from the water based vehicle, basically turning it into a worthless cottage cheese-like sludge that won't cover anything. All the water has been separated from the acrylic/latex infusion, and no longer spreads the paint solids or active vehicle of acrylic or latex across the surface. It clumps into likeminded blobs when the water is frozen off.) Oil doesn't become a solid under normal earthly conditions, be it fossil, animal or plant derived. (oils can become viscous under very cold earthly conditions, which is part of the reason why paint sprays so badly in very cold conditions) Of course, there are variations in the boiling and freezing point of various oils, but that doesn't concern writers using spray paint. You have to be dealing with extreme sub-minus temperatures to inhibit oil paint flow. Your primary concern as a writer in cold weather is keeping the can's pressurized gas propellant warm so you can maintain a proper spray pressure. When painting in cold conditions, I keep an outline can tucked in my armpit under my jacket until I'm ready to use it or, if the spot permits, keeping all my paint in a camp cooler. (some other options are overheating your cans prior to painting under hot water or dropping chemical heat packets into your bag while painting, just be careful a heat packet isn't sitting all night on the side of one can, or you might get a violent depressurization) If you limit the cans to cold exposure, they will retain heat from an insulated environment and residual interior heat from each other for quite a long time. Unfortunately, metals are generally very good at transferring energy. That's why aluminum beer cans cool down much faster than glass bottles.

It's not very technical, like....at all, but they looked like they were having a hell of a good time. That's what counts in my perspective. I've been painting for 21 years and I've learned the hard way that fun is the most important part. Technical ability is fun to learn, at least for me, but once you have it you need to find another motivation to keep your interest alive. That's why I never discount some raw-ass graffiti with dudes putting their future on the line. When you dissolve all the extras and esoterics, the foundation of raw joy in spreading color still remains.
