I've noticed that when people talk about "modern music"-especially in a disparaging way-they're really just referring to serialism when modern music actually represents a very broad spectrum of styles. Which style are you most excited to learn more about?
Japanese classical music has gotten s lot of attention. TiaLeon Marsalis GeorfeWalker AnthonyDavis have invested seriiusmusic with jazz gospel&African traditions. I'd like to see more talk about newcomtemporary music from India,Belize,Iceland Nigeria etc.
Also I have no idea what is happening in true avant-garde music snd Ircam & computer music. New instruments . Though I'm aware of thr many new playing techniques being introduced everyday.
Delightful putting pulling such a woven picture of music influencing us all in places from commercials to concert hall. I've enjoyed this more than anticipated.
Yes this is the trickiest period of 'classical' music without a doubt, but ironically, as you point out, the one that more contemporary people enjoy than any other via film music. Amazingly it now also 'joins up' with much earlier music in some cases. I went to a concert of largely renaissance polyphony that also had a couple of sacred pieces by Arvo Part, and at the end the conductor turned around and acknowledged the composer, who was actually in the audience! You can't get more old and new than that :)
I like the description of 20th century music. I hear it's influence everywhere - it expanded our musical lexicon. it wasn't designed to be necessarily aesthetic. finding the balance between structure and aesthetic is always the balancing act.
Thanks for watching! If you got to my channel and look under "playlists" it'll be there. Obviously this is the first video, the rest will be fleshed out in the near future.

I've enjoyed your series and began to post them, thanks!
Wow the very last part (whom the music is for) was very well stated. I'll know how to tell my non-musical friends now!

This guy honestly has been the best introduction on the topic for me! Hope he is well and comes back. It's not too late.
You mentioned your Atomic Period playlist. Where can I find it?

Ok maybe I'm not very sophisticated but this music is terribly ungracious. Give me the romantic period all day long lol
