No, but female victims of rape require women only spaces in which to receive support as many many survivors are terrified of being around men after their ordeal. Most perpetrators are men and most survivors are women. As for male survivors, most perpetrators against them are also men. If male victims would benefit from having female only therapists etc I think that should be a service that is provided.

i agree that Hussain leant into the wrong end of the argument... to a point. Helena nailed it, i think, when she says that the actual legal framework is so unimportant to Badenoch that she isn't remotely prepared or willing to talk about that side of thing, and I think Hussain's persistent skewering of this highlighted the whole 'vibes' approach to this policy. Where it could have been improved, in hindsight, is if she had followed up that line of questioning with an exposure of that: 'Okay, you refuse to discuss the legal details, so are you effectively saying women's shelters are free to expel anyone they don't like the look of?'
I've said, and I'll say it again, Badenoch does not understand the Equalities Act and the provision's under sex discrimination that allows for single-sex spaces (that excludes trans people) where there is a justification to do so. I do feel there's a lot of misunderstanding, and in some cases outright misinformation about the equality act. First of all, single sex spaces were not hard won rights codified in the equality act, as some people like to claim. Single sex spaces are an exemption to the equality act that existed before. It is my understanding that the "clarification" she wants to provide is already how the law is judged. If a service can argue that it cannot reasonably provide its service if it's made to provide it to trans women as well as cis women, it is allowed to do so. To the best of my knowledge there's only one women's refuge that has even tried to do that, and it's the one fronted by jkr, because most actual refuges know that trans women aren't a threat to vulnerable women and often are vulnerable women needing refuge. It's sad, I remember the bathroom bill debates in America decades ago and feeling smug that at least we in Britain weren't that bad. How naive I was.

To the best of my knowledge there's only one women's refuge that has even tried to do that, and it's the one fronted by jkr, because most actual refuges know that trans women aren't a threat to vulnerable women and often are vulnerable women needing refuge.

I’m not sure you can criticise ‘the framing’ of an interview extract out of context. Mishal did an incredible job of exposing the lie at the heart of the Tory position: They care about the welfare of vulnerable people.

Basically the proposal is that we just ban being trans, but tolerate people dressing how they like, so long as they don't mind being challenged using any facilties all the time if they don't look stereotypical for their binary birth sex.

Gender and sex are very, very different. Why is this distinction never made at the beginning of these discussions. It just causes unnecessary confusion and also helps weaponise the subject.
