I think he took a gamble, realizing that if Macy was _ever_ going to accept a proposal from him, it would be now that she had broken up with Thorne (or so Anthony thought), her singing career which had come between her and Anthony was history, Anthony had been with her at the hospital as a supporting friend, and she had not yet had time to process her new life post cancer or weigh her options for the future. In addition to that, he put her in a position where accepting his proposal would have been the path of least resistance, and turning him down would have been extremely awkward. This is the basic structure and some key scenes from Anthony's introduction storyline, in the order that they happen: 1. Macy and Thorne are together (conflict-free starting point). 2. Anthony tries to have his way with Macy in her bedroom (kissing and possibly taking advantage of her s exually) but Thorne's actions prevent him from succeeding. This culminates in physical fighting with a third, incapacitated, person present. 3. Anthony's big ego makes him convinced that Macy likes him although she is really furious with him because of what he has done. 4. Thorne insists that Macy should stay away from Anthony and not put herself in "harm's way". 5. Anthony invites Macy to have a drink with him (this time it's reverse psychology to _keep_ her from drinking). 6. Anthony feigns grief over a (non-existent) dead cat in order to win Macy's sympathy. 7. Anthony designs a swimsuit for Macy and manipulates it in order to see Macy without her clothes on, against her will. 8. Anthony appears to become involved with another woman (Sally) but in reality he still wants Macy. 9. Macy turns Anthony down for Thorne. 10. Thorne and Macy's formal relationship status changes (they get a divorce). 11. One key difference is the way the stakes are raised compared to the first time we passed through point 9. The first time, Macy turned Anthony down in private (and his defeat was short-lived since Thorne left town). This time, she wanted to turn him down in private again but Anthony wouldn't let her, thus setting himself up for massive public humiliation (as well as long-term defeat). This is what triggers the dark turn he is about to take. It really bl e w my mind when I first realized that Anthony's entire run on the show is a kind of _palindrome!_ But this is not the only structurally interesting thing going on in this storyline - this _whole story_ is built on storyline fragments, scenes, and allusions from Thorne and Macy's entire character histories, including Thorne shoo ting Ridge, Deveney Dixon's scheme, the Cyrano love poems to Macy, Macy's alcoholism, and the misinterpreted Jake kiss - all of which will resurface in this storyline in a different shape.
WOW. This is absolutely brilliant! 👏👏 Both the "mirroring" structure of Anthony's arc and the story fragments from Thorne and Macy's history (now that you've identified them) seem too deliberate to be a coincidence or merely the result of something being revealed in the writing despite the writer's intention. This confirms what you've always said - that the writing of Anthony as a villain has been careful and intentional (they didn't suddenly make him evil). Omg how can anthony be so blind? This is really getting bad for him. I dont think he will ever get over that rejection in front of all friends and cameras. What a big shame and disgrace for him. I really feel sorry for Anthony the first time since he is in the soap.
Anthony should have seen a red flag 🚩 at that lol. But maybe he thought that due to the history of the trio, that Macy wanted to make sure her mother was completely over Anthony b4 deciding to say yes?? I mean, Sally hasn't been about Anthony romantically in a very long time.. But that is the only explanation I can think of that Anthony was still so super confident lol
It was clearly Macy's attempt at getting out of the situation gracefully. She wanted to get out of the public eye and she wanted Sally's help to handle the situation. Ironically, Sally and Macy would probably have done a better job if Thorne _hadn't_ also got involved. He's the one who wanted to announce the engagement. Sally could have handled the press and sent them away, giving Macy a chance to turn Anthony down in private.
What is clear in Anthony's proposal scene is that the relationship he believes he has with Macy has mostly been a figment of his imagination. His forceful proposal is a desperate attempt to ensure that the vision he has of his and Macy's relationship stays in tact. The presence of the media becomes crucial here as they too are integral to the process of manufacturing narratives which, msy in reality, not be true. When Thorne snd Macy announce their engagement and the media circles around them, Anthony's manufactured romance falls apart in front of him. Yet, he is so intent on continuing to see it as reality, that he will do whatever he has to do to hold onto it.
Great interpretation! And in a way, this proposal is just like when they first met (and many times after that) - Anthony is basically trying to force himself on Macy by not accepting no for an answer. He has always had an inflated ego that won't let him accept rejection or defeat. And now suddenly he has a rude awakening to the fact that he is _not_ omnipotent, and the public humiliation is a serious bl ow to his ego. It's not just his romantic dreams that are shattered but his entire self image, which he can't allow. Are you familiar with Shakespeare's Othello, by the way? The show is building up Anthony's motivation for evil, and his modus operandi, in a way that closely resembles the character of Iago.
@@Esi-741 YES! I remember several of us commenting a while back on the similarities between Ridge and Anthony, including them _both_ taking advantage of Thorne's intoxicated wives. @@annieo6527yes indeed, I am familiar with Othello and there are definite parallels between Anthony and Iago. Not sure if that's what Brad was consciously going for though
@@leviaj1 I'm not sure either that's what _Brad_ was consciously going for, but it seems like _someone_ among the writers was consciously going for it, given how far-reaching the parallels are. (spoilers) First there is Iago's core nature - evil behind a deceptively friendly facade. Then there are his motives - romantic jealousy (believing Othello has slept with his wife) AND professional envy (a missed promotion). Then his methods - using subtle manipulation to fuel Othello's homi cidal rage towards an innocent woman, and using a planted incriminating object to do it, with the goal of making Othello a murderer. And finally his accomplice - getting his wife to help plant the object for him, and stabbing her to death when she understands what he is plotting, confronts him, and threatens to expose him. _All of this_ applies to Anthony. (Then, at the end of the storyline, Anthony shifts into the Othello position and basically re-enacts Act 5, Scene 2 with Macy as Desdemona.)

@@babs4848well, Brooke would have been home in Los Angeles a long time ago... She doesn't have it in her, to be as selfless as Taylor is... although I really never liked the Morocco-storyline at all. Glad when it's finally over😊😴
@@susankent6051 right? Brooke would have been back in LA, and prob even dragged ole Omar along to use his affection for her to help her somehow get Ridge back lol.

Omg how can anthony be so blind? This is really getting bad for him. I dont think he will ever get over that rejection in front of all friends and cameras. What a big shame and disgrace for him. I really feel sorry for Anthony the first time since he is in the soap.
Yes no one likes rejection it doesn't feel good
What made Anthony so sure that Macy would say yes? This is ridiculous...
Macy: I need to talk to my mother…what?! Why?! 😂😂
@@annieo6527 On your first paragraph, you basically described Ridge. 😂
@@Esi-741 YES! I remember several of us commenting a while back on the similarities between Ridge and Anthony, including them _both_ taking advantage of Thorne's intoxicated wives. The difference is that the writers made excuses for Ridge and let him get away with his "prank", while Anthony is revealed as a the villain he always was.
(spoilers)
First there is Iago's core nature - evil behind a deceptively friendly facade.
The "fine acting" in the end 19:49 😝
Kellyanne toned down her muppet acting in this episode so we could appreciate Ian's constipated acting.
Hollywood has come very far, don't y'all think 😂.
Apparently James came to write Omar's biography and not a single day have I seen him with a pen and a book.

James is truly a good friend to Taylor. He did all the legwork to find her. Ridge went off straight away and married Brooke. Taylor had just been “dead” what, 3-2 months?
James thinks that palace is Taylor's prison. Sure this storyline is Taylor's character banishment from the LA storylines. As @NewYorkNick brillalty said, the junior writer jailed Taylor's chatacter via Omar.
Thanks for the shoutout. 🙂 Love "junior writer" because it has a great double meaning! 😆
And here it all started... Anthony being humiliated in public...
Don’t just sit there Thorne?! Go with Macy and Sally!!!!! 😊
The entire Taylor storyline has gone on entirely too long. There were so many different ways to make things more interesting and progress everyone's storyline. It has been very flat and boring without any real flair. However, I am watching it 35+ years in and know the history and that could be a huge part of it. But, truly Omar did foreshadow what Taylor's life was going to be if she went back and he was positively right.
