They don’t use copper washers as standard it’s a thicker aluminium one. I use the oem ones. Can still change them for copper ones though, 14mm is the size you’ll want.
Just love all your videos and thank you for making them. Just did mine and the oil filter was fine. I used a new Triumph aluminium crush washer on the sump and torqued to 25nm - checked with 2 different torque wrenches but I am still getting a slight leak (wet finger after a day of rest). Is it alright to go tighter - maybe the crush washer needs a bit extra when first used or do you think there is another issue. Is it critical which way up the crush washer goes ? The bolt fitted fine and easily and not cross threaded -. bike is a Gen 2 - XRX 2015 - 13600 miles, last removed by Destination Triumph at 12k service last year - any advise would be appreciated.
It’s not a crush washer the standard one, just a normal aluminium washer about 3mm thick. Could try giving it a bit more of a tighten but it shouldn’t be leaking. Is it not running down from somewhere else and just ending there?
@@MuddySump I used triumph part number T3558989 which was domed one side and flat the other. I will have a good look today and see if it's coming from anywhere else. Thank you for your help and advise, If all else fails I will get a new bolt and washer and start again. The oil is Castrol Power 1 and only been in a few days so probably can re-use it. Thank you kind sir.
hi Muddy, great video as always. I changed the filter and oil in my Tiger 800 yesterday, however when topping up with new oil, I had no reaction from the sight glass at all. it didn't look like any oil was leaving when drained, and whist adding the new oil, none appeared to be going in. I put approximately 3.5L in (service sheet says that's how much it holds) but I wanted to see if this was a big problem. Bike ran okay this morning to work after a jittery start up. Any ideas? Thanks
MuddySump that was my initial thought but I gave it a good clean before I changed the filter/oil and couldn't see anything. the only idea I have is that there wasn't enough oil in there previously to reach the minimum mark, so after draining and refilling it simply doesn't have enough oil to fill the sight glass. but what I don't want to do is overfill. thanks for the quick response
Nick AJ try having someone lean the bike side to side while you're looking in the sight glass. See if you can start to see the oil level then, or even have a look when it's on the side stand
MuddySump thanks muddy, will try this tonight. do you think there's any issue with under-filling the oil? I can't think of why it wouldn't show in the glass
When you’ve filled it up too much? Take the sump plug out but keep it held over the hole so the oil comes out slowly and you can keep putting it back in to check the oil level
Should never use Teflon tape on any threaded fitting on an engine. The stuff can get into the oil pump and galleries and ruin your day. Same for too much rtv. Ask me how I know? Worked for MB 45yrs.
Thanks. Its PTFE tape, its made for sealing things like that. Always comes off when taking the bolt out or hanging off the sump like it was in the video. Not necessary but i've always used it so just habit
I use Castrol fully synthetic 10w40. You can use semi synthetic too which is a bit cheaper. I replied to loads of comments on my phone but it doesnt seem to have worked. Did you get a reply off me already?
I usually just take the sump guard off now for the sake of 6 fasteners. A few drops of oil on the guard get to places you can’t reach then drips on the floor
You mention that the engine is warm. Do you suggest to warm up the engine before changing the oil? If so, don't you think you may have issues with removing the engine plug as this is made of a different metal compared to the engine block and they should expand differently upon heat?
+Demetrio FILHO yes, change the oil when it's warm. Flows better that way and anything in there will come out if it's freshly circulated. The different metals don't get that hot to make them not separate.
@@MuddySump I'm pretty sure it's because the oil then drains better towards the left side where the bolt is. I just did an oil change an mine took about 3.8L, which seems to be more than yours did here.
What engine oil is that you're using in the video? Personally I think all engine oils are the same as long as they meet spec...but I like the one that you used in the video because it has a nice pouring mechanism without needing for funnels.
First off, nice videos. Second... why put that white tape on? Doesn't it melt? I wouldn't want to risk getting any of it in the oil. I just dont think it is necessary.
Winding the sealing tape on the drain plug is a routine procedure or do you do this from operating experience? Are there any cases of oil leakage from under the cork?
Thanks for the video, can I ask why you put plumbers tape on the threads? If they flake off and get into the oil the pieces could cause havoc in the engine. The nylon washer should be enough for sealing imho.
+Bob Sawatsky it's the way I was trained. Don't use it anymore apart from on the engine plugs if they start weeping. It says to use it in the manual on those
Hi just watched video & noticed the washer looked flexible , i was told that i had to use a copper washer on the sump plug ,would a copper washer be ok as that what ive now got or should i use a flexible washer & if so what type ? thanks martin
+MrBackyardMechanic 👍🏻 nothing with the engine. The gear selector shaft sometimes has a fault where the pin holding the return Spring on breaks off needing a new shaft
@@MuddySump Yep, I had my pin break a month ago.. came home shifting by hand-twisting the gears! Luckily it hadn't fallen through so there wasn't any damage.
I know, I've got some in the garage, keep forgetting to put them on. I've always used it on drain bolts, it was I was told when worked in a shop. Triumph says to use it on the engine plugs on the sides of the engine
Is the moisture bad ? My 2012 tiger has moisture in the sight glass . I am waiting for the oil filter to do a change . could it just be that its over its oil change ? I just got the bike a few weeks ago and haven't ridden more than 100 miles maybe 70 ish miles and have no idea when it was done last . I know that it wasn't smart because the oil was pretty dark in the sight glass but it has been my dream for 25 years to have a bike and I couldn't fight the urge to get out and start practicing . I am not riding until I change the oil . also I got the heavier oil recommended because it is been over 100 f every day for about a month now and I have heard the shifting is more smooth with the 15W oil ?. Thank you again so much for your videos and I hope you and yours are well
Some long runs should start burning it off. It’s caused by the bike not been used for long and not getting hot enough. Or some people just start them and let them run a few minutes to charge the battery, better to not run it and just put the battery on charge every now and again. That’s all my bikes get these days 😄 It doesn’t take long for the oil to start looking black, it’s probably fine still
I use Bosch 3323's, they are about an inch longer than the originals and made by Filtech, just like the Triumph branded filters. More oil capacity is always a good thing.
Oops, I get them from Amazon when they are on sale and stock up, they are about $14 cdn right now, a little expensive. www.amazon.ca/Bosch-3323-Premium-FILTECH-Filter/dp/B000BZIFV0
Just wanted to say thank you for these great videos. I just changed my oil (warning light was coming on while running hot), and your vids made it easy as pie.
MuddySump I'm assuming it was low. I drained around 3L (did not change filter) and refilled closer to 3,5ish. The light has not come in since, but I haven't had the same warm circumstances yet ;)
MuddySump Had it in for the 20.000km service where they filled it with 10w40, and now it happens again. At idle when hot (city-driving) the oil-lamp flickers, but when I rev it to 2000 the lamp shuts off again. I'm suspecting it might be too thing, for some reason, thus not maintaining enough oil-pressure, but I haven o idea why it would be too thin seeing Triumph reccomends 10w/40 (and 10w/50). Before the service I filled it with 10w50 and did not have the problem. Also read it might be water on the oil-pressure switch being wet (water)? Meh, think I'l ljust refill with 10w/50 again and see how it goes.
Sounds like the oil pressure relief valve faulty. Had the same symptoms happen on 2 triumph americas, oil light flicker while idling then fine when riding. It was an engine split on those to change them, can get it on the tiger with the exhaust and sump off. Is it not under warranty anymore?
Indeed. This makes sense to me. I was scared to remove the plug while the engine was hot because I play with flying models and once I tried to remove an inox plug from a aluminum engine body and the threads came out with the plug :( But in this case it makes totally sense to warm it up. I noticed you do not use the Castrol oil recommended by Triumph. Which one you use? Why? Thank you for your videos. They are very high quality and very useful.
Thanks! Thinking a little more about the problem, I believe the best approach is to untight the plug while it is cold, just to break the seal, and warm up the engine before removing the plug. This way, there will be no issues with the expansion of the different metals and so. I checked and indeed the oil is red and the bottle is gold as you mentioned. Thanks again!
I still refer to this every time I change the oil on my 2018. Thanks!

I know it's an older video but it might be useful to mention that the Tiger 800 should be put on the side stand to drain. Otherwise good :)
