  • The Cwm Dwr Entrance to the OFD cave system starts as a climb down a shaft and then follows some tight crawls to enter the heart of the mighty Ogof Ffynnon Ddu cave system. From this point a maze of passages can be explored leading to the lower OFD I section of the cave and via the streamway to the upper OFD II part of the system. This video was taken during a caving trip with Dudley Caving Club on Sunday 19th February 2012.

      +Crichjo32 :I don't understand why everyone seems to feel discomfort watching this.The most beautiful views of the world can be found in caves. Plus nobody freaks out in the elevator or in the middle of a concert (and you have way less space then).

      It's simple really. To be able to truly explore most caves you need to be relatively small. Don't be afraid of the dark or claustrophobia. But mainly, not everyone can make the trip to many of these places, so they enjoy seeing other people make the trips. Elevators are also a bit different, since you are so far underground. Because of this some people are more scared of caves than elevators.

    It's only the tight spaces that make me panic, I'd be worried of getting stuck then dying a grueling death. Someone died in nutty putty cave that way and they could never retrieve his body so they just sealed up the place. Scary

    • @nickarry
      @nickarry 5 років тому +50

      saw the same story.... imagine dying after being upside down for 27 hours with your arm pinned under your body, looking at a dead end, with no way to push yourself back up, all while having your chest under pressure from the squeeze your in. there aren't many worse ways to die than that.

      The difference between these two situations is that the caving shown in this video is with experienced cavers who know the route and the one at Nutty Putty, they just guessed and went for it. The latter strategy not ending well.

    I really like the idea of spelunking, and I can do "versions" of it. I'm not really claustrophobic, but tight squeezes half filled with water, or squeezes that require crawling are out of the question for me. I don't ever want to get stuck in a position that isn't upright, or in a position that can fill with water.

    looks like a nice cave with some fun squeezes, would love to get there to do some of the stuff you film but it's unlikely due to the fact I'm on the other side of the world in Tasmania. Thanks for the great quality caving vids. I love the sight of gumboots disappearing into small holes in front of me.

      You have some genuinely stunning caves in Tasmania, albeit the powers that be are perhaps excessively strict on access. That said, I had a very near miss in Niggly Cave narrowly avoiding an 80m plummet. A very scary cave

      @@hyweldavies936 It can be. We do have some pretty fantastic caves, and relatively few require permits, but can be challenging to get to.

    I went on a trip about 6 years ago to a indoor climbing and caving centre (cant remember where it was) and it was a crazy experience we did a few of the harder trails and it was brilliant but scary. As scary as it was, it felt safe as it was man made. I couldnt imagine doing it in a real cave must be an amazing experience though and you must get such a great sense of accomplishment and a huge buzz.
    Do these caves lead to an exit or do you have to work your way back the way you came?

    • @CaverKeith
      @CaverKeith  6 років тому

      It is an amazing experience and yes, we do get a great feeling of accomplishment. Most caves have a single entrance so we have to go back out the same way that we went in. A few caves have multiple entrances and incredible through trips can be done. This cave has three entrances and the through trips take around 5-6 hours of very varied caving, including following an underground stream. In some single entrance caves it is possible to do round trips.

      Hi Molly. I can honestly say that I've never been worried about getting stuck. A couple of years ago I was caving with a young lady who got really badly wedged. Fortunately she remained calm and we were able to free her. She said that she was calm because she had faith in us and our ability to get her out.

    Reminds me of the time the tour guide at the Jenolan caves told the story about 2 Swedish girls stuck very deep (steady now) inside the caves, no English, panicking, no way back ONLY forward. Screaming, crying, down there for a long time with limited battery life left and Nobody wanted to do that in the pitch dark. incidentally he turned off the lights for 10 minutes on our tour and said after a few hours you start hallucinating thinking up is down etc. FUCK that! Respect for cavers pushing it to the limits. felt my heart beating faster watching this video. I've started watching more videos like this while trying to calm myself.
