I'm happy to know that I wasn't alone in this feeling of doubt and thinking I'm crazy that this song existed. Explaining that I did the dance during PE in elementary school in the 90s and just receiving strange looks in response. Vindication doesn't feel like enough to describe the feeling but it will do.

20 years ago today this hit No2 on the Official UK singles chart. I’ve had my ups and downs over the years about how I felt about having co-written and co-produced this song… but it paid for my home, it paid for me to live for 4 years while I got my degree and masters, and the whole life I have now owes a massive debt to this song.
Whether you love it or loathe it, I’m EXTREMELY proud of having co-written this 🎉❤. It’s nothing like as easy to write something this catchy and cheesy as people may think… and a huge thanks to Mike Stock, Bob Patmore and Steve Crosby for giving me the opportunity.

The cultural anthropology of this song is legit fascinating. Like even as a kid I recognized this as niche, like vaguely wondering why it exists, because it almost seemed like - beyond a fever dream - everyone around me collectively imagined this into existence. When I first went to England this song hit it big. It blew my mind because throughout my childhood at day camps and sleep away camps in the 1980s, we sang the chorus part of the song, with the arm movements. I discovered this song and its music video when I was looking up a song or so from Phineas and Ferb and one of their songs might've parodied this one when I looked up the trivia in one of their songs. This song and some of its words was brought up in it. I gave this song and its music video a gander and all I have to say is this song actually is cool.
