For over 50 years I've listened to and studied this work, and played it a number of times, and I believe this is about the most appealing rendition I've ever heard. Helseth's tone color, her flair with phrasing, delightful trills . . . everything sounded warm and effortlessly flowing. Even the quite slow 2nd mov't maintained a sweet and expressive momentum such that I imagine 10,000 trumpeters will both envy and try to emulate it. The cadenza was, in my opinion, a tad long (and yet so musical and well executed!) and that's not really a complaint; the more I listen to her playing, the more I want to hear. Bravissima!

There are lots of trumpet concerto’s particularly from the Baroque period which despite the technical limitations of the instruments are worth investigating if that’s your thing.

As you may have noticed, this concerto contains a lot of chromaticism for the solo trumpet. Haydn wrote this concerto in 1796 for Anton Weidinger after being inspired by Weidinger's valved trumpet, which was the first real successful effort in creating a reliable valved trumpet. However, valved trumpets only became commonplace in the 19th century, and French conservatoires only started using valved trumpets in the 1900s, as it was a common belief that the valved trumpet restricted the richness of sound of the natural trumpet. Composers such as Beethoven and Schubert also wrote selective chromaticism for the trumpet, but they relied on reaching the notes outside the harmonic series by hand-stopping.

The opening trumpet phrase of this work can be played in a lyric, shaped manner which invites the audience to participate in a musical experience rather than just listen to the shiny trumpet play the right notes. Unfortunately, the great majority of trumpet players, even the great ones, don't look for expression in the opening line. I don't know why they think it is a march. Most orchestras play the opening more lyrically, why not take a clue from that?
Wynton has a wonderful take on the first movement as a whole: he points out that the emphasis is on the 3rd beat. Try it, it works. If you begin legato, tastefully emphasizing the second note (3rd beat) of the opening theme, tapering into the 3rd note downbeat, lightly dancing up to emphasize the 3rd beat lyric line in the 3rd measure, you will create a sense of musical line which sets up the rest of the phrases.
Ed Tarr said of the Haydn first movement that one could tell after the first 4 measures, or sometimes after the first 3 notes, what kind of performance it would be.
Ms. Helseth is certainly an excellent trumpet player.
