WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

Hello!! i have come across your channel a few weeks ago and started going through all your old videos. Some of your pieces are downright remarkable. i started scraping Slate against my concrete pathway when i was roughly 13 or 14 and 6 or 7 years later im getting back into knapping and shaping various stones, floor tiles and thick 40z bottles. I do not have actual bone or copper tools so i make do with rocks ive found from my lake. they work very beautifully when i shape glass bottles but take too much off on floor tile. Thank you for the rediscovered interest and thank you for the many many hours you've spent crafting and profecting your art and portraying it in a wholesome way for us to view. God bless

Talking about watching videos..
I came across Dr. Phil's podcast Phil In The Blanks..
He was talking about the " Squatter" pandemic that is rapidly growing in popularity.. It's about how squatters can enter tour home without permission while you're away and it can be very difficult to remove them and in some cases they take over ownership of the dwelling.. And they can do this by using loopholes in justice system. It's a pretty good video to watch.. episode 226 I believe..

I was watching another knapping channel recently (I know) and the knapper took grinding the platforms to another level, Isolating using up stokes each side of the platform then down strokes on the platform, finishing with a grind across the face, my question is do you think all that is necessary?, all I do is blunt the sharp edges with a horizontal action.

My philosophy in knapping is to do the least amount of work to get the results that are "good enough." But there's nothing wrong with getting complicated or "fancy" if you have the time.

I got a peice of this in the chunker box. I didn't get a big peice out of it but I tried my hand at a Mini Solutrean Spear Stuck in Bone pendant. Turned out pretty cool. I used a Sound about Solutrean Hypothesis behind the short. It got like 10k and a few comments telling me how stupid I am 😂

I heat treated basalt. So far it didn't go as expected. It doesn't hold an edge and it compound fractures when you tap it.

You cannot heat treat anything formed via volcanic processes sadly. This includes Rhyolite, Dacite, Basalt, or Obsidian. Other materials that are affected detrimentally byheat treatment are Ft. Payne Chert and Hornstone. Hope this helps!
