FaunaGuard - Sustainable and innovative underwater system

Van Oord devotes specific attention to sustainable working methods. During construction, for example, Van Oord uses the FaunaGuard system, which it also developed. FaunaGuard is an innovative system for using safe levels of underwater noise to temporarily drive marine mammals and fish from active construction zones. Sounds are emitted from underwater speakers as soon as work commences to keep the fauna in the area out of the active zone.
We realise that we often work in ecologically vulnerable areas. Our work can affect the environment and life in the area concerned. As a socially responsible company, we want to minimise any harmful effects of our work and, where possible, encourage positive effects. We have therefore teamed up with international experts, research institutes and universities to develop the Van Oord Guards (PlumeGuard, FaunaGuard and ReefGuard). Our Guards are innovation at its best, as witnessed by the success that we have had with them in 2014. Where feasible, we offer the Guards in our tenders.
