The truckie most likely missed getting into a low gear (for engine braking) at the start of the descent and burnt out his wheel brakes earlier on in the descent. (The wheel brakes aren't made for prolonged braking of 40 tonne trucks, just keeping them stationary at the lights.) So all he could do was lean on the horn and hope the drivers in front would work out what was going on and get out of his way. Most of them ducked onto the 'wrong' side of the road and got out of his way, and the first guy was probably flashing his headlights at the oncoming cars so they'd be alert and they all managed to get off the side in time to let the heavy guy get through. The guy in the caravan possibly could have gone into the spare lane on the left side of the road and braked hard to let the truck pass, then ducked back in - seems like there might have been enough time for that, but he may have had a brown trouser moment at the sight of the truck coming at him and simply tried to stay clear without getting out of his lane. Apart from getting into the situation at the start of the hill, the truckie and the other car drivers all did a good job coping with a potentially deadly situation.

Just a thought. May be we should have a better way to tell people that we have an emergency? Say, hazard lights plus honking in The Morse Code SOS, like 3 short 3 long and then 3 short?

I will say its good to see people pull over to assist on witnessing a accident. Not law, but is the right thing to do. I watch a few U.S Dash cam videos and the majority of them just drive on by.
In the USA the standard of driving appears to be far more dangerous than in civilised countries elsewhere... especially in regards to speed on interstates.... Many a vid shows USA Police and other emergency vehicles with every flashing light operating... being run into by dumbarse morons. Most ordinary motorists don't have that lightbar protection and won't risk their lives stopping in those circumstances. Can't blame them. In Australia (and NZ) the speeds are a little less and the drivers are able to get off the roadway and park relatively safely???? so they help. In the Outback everyone stops....
I think a good rule of thumb is stop only if (1) it is safe to do so, and (2) you are first on the scene, and (3) you are in a position to assist. Absolutely do not stop if it isn't safe to do so (you could become another casualty if its on a blind corner and someone then hits you while you are trying to help, for example), and there is no point stopping if there are already others helping, or you are unable to assist.
Highway speeds in the US are usually 65mph sometimes 55 mph, much slower than aus. Most interstate drivers ignore posted limits, everybody ends up driving around 75-80 mph, lane rules are ignored i.e. fast lane/overtaking lanes and slow lanes are mixed up. Very little space is allocated to pull over safely. Driver training and etiquette rivals most 3rd world countries. Car maintenance is terrible, it's not uncommon to see cars driving around with missing fenders, cars speeding with narrow spare tires on the vehicle. No street lighting can make driving on US roads incredibly dangerous at night or in rainy or snowy conditions. Unfortunately the US road regulations hasn't been improved since the 1950's Don't get me started on the DMV.@@markd.9538
Really people,.. a big ass truck leaning on their horn, probably got hazard lights flashing. I doubt this is all happening for shits and giggles. Plus that truck safety ramp didn't look like it would stop much. If the truck was going faster....
Screew the truck. Just cos they are bigger doesn't mean he owns the road. He had a problem with his brakes. There's a wall the truck(any descent)driver could have used to slow down. Could have turned off truck to use motor as a brake. He knew the risks when he got his licence.
Largely thanks to this channel I have three Very Important Rules I keep top of mind when driving: 1) don't f**k with the truck (includes buses, semis, small trucks etc) 2) when in doubt, wait it out 3) safety first. It doesn't matter who's right, apologise if it'll make an agitated driver leave you alone, give way to that pushy d**khead in a ute, just keep yourself safe first and foremost

@@umwhatamIdoinghere Most of the time yes. If the Airbags go off then the impact was serious, which usually means that at least the front part of the Frame will be crushed or bent, because its designed to do so. Also on most cars the Airbagactivation usually causes a permanent and non deletable entry in the SRS control module, the seatbelt tensioners go off, most of the time the windshield cracks due to the pressure from the Airbags and a few other things. So overall you'd have to replace the whole SRS system, including the seatbelts, on cars where the Airbag sits on top of the dash you'd also have to replace the whole dashboard due to the Airbag Coverseams being ripped open, plus all of the damaged Bodyparts as well as repair the damaged parts of the Frame. For most cars thats a financial writeoff since the repairs easily cost more then replacing the vehicle.

Watching these vids helps me to drive defensively. You can clearly see when so many of them get into trouble and the openings they could have left for themselves (and for others). You can't predict every situation, but there are little things every driver can do - here are 3 easy ones: Always leave extra room between you and the car in front to brake if you need; - and let aggressived drivers in - let those idiots take the lead if they want to be heroes - I don't need their agro hounding my tail; and - one of my favourites: never travel in another driver's blind spot.
What really pisses me off, is when 30 people stop to rubberneck, and make the situation far more dangerous than it needs to be. If you can't render meaningful help, why stop just because you're there? Continue on. Keep the area clear. Call and report it if you're able. People who don't know what they're doing, are dangerous. They do stupid things like trying to move injured people.. or giving them water.. or yanking helmets off riders.
It is easy to jump to conclusions and judge things, but that is Victoria Pass, an extremely steep descent, and AFAIK, on that and similar grades trucks are supposed to be in a sufficiently low gear that speed can be controlled without the use of primary brakes. Which is, I believe, the exact meaning of "Trucks Must Use Low Gear". That said, it's hard to understand what the caravan driver was thinking.
The amount of people who have to overtake a vehicle doing 95km/h on a 100km/h road is insane, just sit behind until there is an overtaking lane. Better to get to your destination 30 min late than not at all. Also, who overtakes with a Caravan on your vehicle, you are on holidays, just chill and enjoy your travels.

Truckie with brake failure video. Was expecting to see the wobblebox demolished.
Sadly that caravan lived to see another day. The one at 5:45 made up for it, though.
@@KarlEller that blokes hopes and dreams are lying shattered in the desert, and you're happy?
@@duckman12569 Anybody rich enough to buy a new flash caravan is rich enough to have insurance on it, no hopes and/or dreams were shattered. Also, as clearly evidenced by that particular video, that driver probably SHOULDN'T be towing a caravan as they clearly have poor judgement.
Just a thought. May be we should have a better way to tell people that we have an emergency? Say, hazard lights plus honking in The Morse Code SOS, like 3 short 3 long and then 3 short?
The kenny that smashed the caravan and got away with barely a scuff, I bet those harley riders needed to change their pants. Crazy the amount of folk just not thinking around trucks, they need space and lots of it. Crazy with the getz and lightning strike though, that tree trunk just switched careers into claymore, could have been a lot worse.
Just the noise from that must have been deafening.
Makes me wonder what insurance companies think when they see claims like that.
@@brendamayfuller8803 after the big perth hailstorm a few years back a lot have written in exception clauses in case of a repeat, technically it could be said to fall under act of god, but you could also say the local council could be held responsible, the lightning struck the tree, for sure, but it was council property that caused damage to the vehicle [ bit like the old if you get rear-ended while stopped at a light, and hit another car from the rebound, you're still at fault for the car you hit, rather than 'the cause' vehicle. stupid logic imho.

@@simonjones2645 double edged sword, you don't ask a train to slow down because you need 3 more seconds to dive in front before the boom gates drop, the onus is also on the overtaker to remain within speed limit and execute an overtake only when safe to do so. Yep. To top it off, it's the truck that hits the branch which causes it to fall on the DC's car.
9:04 I hope he bought a lotto ticket after that one 😳
That's because in the US they have all that "Freedumb"...
USA, 3.5 times Australia's road death toll per head of population.
Unfortunately the US road regulations hasn't been improved since the 1950's Don't get me started on the DMV.@@markd.9538
people around the truck really didn’t get the memo
There are a few videos later on where the people around the truck really did get the memo
Really people,.. a big ass truck leaning on their horn, probably got hazard lights flashing. I doubt this is all happening for shits and giggles. Plus that truck safety ramp didn't look like it would stop much. If the truck was going faster....
@@Nothingness00000-omuch safer to be rear-ended by him than have a head-on with opposing traffic.
Screew the truck. Just cos they are bigger doesn't mean he owns the road. He had a problem with his brakes. There's a wall the truck(any descent)driver could have used to slow down. Could have turned off truck to use motor as a brake. He knew the risks when he got his licence.
@@rikidawson7510I don't think you've ever been in a large rig let alone driven one.

2) when in doubt, wait it out
3) safety first. It doesn't matter who's right, apologise if it'll make an agitated driver leave you alone, give way to that pushy d**khead in a ute, just keep yourself safe first and foremost

The best is the dumbarse ( Jeep driver i think) @2:25 who trys to cut the truck off way to close and ends up in the ditch.
To be fair he wasn't tailgating until the dc moron pulled into a gap they shouldn't have pulled into. Despite this he had plenty of time to back off & give himself a safe gap making the airbags his prize for being stupid.
As has been said on another dashcam channel, RANGER DANGER! The cammer changed lanes to avoid being hit by a car that was (illegally) changing lanes into him, and the toy truckie got upset because someone dared to invade HIS lane. He possibly didn't notice the reason for the sudden lane change - so many toy truckies seem to drive with their heads inserted in their own exhaust pipes - and decided to visit retribution on the offender, but was hoist with his own petard.
@brianspencer6397 Where is the vehicle illegally changing lanes in front of the dc? Looks to me that the dc was suffering from must be in front syndrome, changed lanes cutting off the ranger then the dingus in the ranger didn't back off like they should have. Both dc & ranger drivers are morons in this situation.
Just because you can't see the truck you just passed in the mirror doesn't mean it disappeared.
At 1:31 @@gqwarrior6694 you can see the lane ended from four to three lanes, the dc car passes the said illegal lane changer at 1:35, yet I think the dc car didn't want to sit behind the slower car and jumped in front of the Ranger danger driver.

First one is Mt Victoria pass where that guy had to get out of the way is a 2 lane sheer drop either side, everyone would be shitting themselves at that including the poor truckie.
That camry that hit the fire hydrant & the white golf that took off in the car park🤣🤣🤣
The white ranger tailgating… that was possibly the easiest way to write-off a car I’ve ever seen!😂😂
Are airbags being deployed an automatic write off?
@@Enakaji another funny part about this is he has/had a relatively new Ranger, so he's obviously got the collision avoidance turned off. I wonder if the insurance companies take that into account.
@@johnnichol9412
In this case “AirBag” Checking.
I’m surprised how the AirBags went off at such a LowSpeed (Soft) Impact, makes me wonder if was staged.
@@Enakaji You are very correct, but I don’t think this accident was even as bad as what your referring to… however even without structural damage to the car, the cost to replace the entire dash alone (and insurance companies inflicting absurd “repair warranty” conditions on repairers) means most are just gonna write it off.
I'm sat here in a zoom meeting waiting for a (UK HGV) CPC course to start.
As a heavy goods driver I have to attend regular training, pass 2 different driving tests and have medical exams, all to make sure I'm safe and competent to drive a HGV.
Car drivers pass one test at 18 and are never questioned or tested again until they're 70.
Guess who the dangerous drivers are? I'll give you one go.
84-85 years old in NSW at least, but yeah!
Plenty of truckies in Australia who think that being big exempts them from the rules.
It's only fair that the people driving the vehicles liable to do the most damage are held to a higher standard
I reckon the insane amount of drugs you guys do merits these tests.
Yeah mate, that'll be you. 😂😂😂😂😂
I mean it’s also worth noting that the proportion of cars to trucks on the road is significantly in favour of cars, therefore the greater proportion of idiots you’ll cross roads with will be inside of cars…
09:10 That lighting was a cracker.
So was the lightning.

my favourite thing about brake checkers getting cause is that theyre probably thinking "oh yeah ill brake check someone to get the insurance money cause im brroke" and then end up having to pay themselves lmao
Yeah damn straight pay themselves. If the DC driver has to show that to Habib's insurer, Habib's gonna end up with a denied claim on his record which he'll have to declare to insurers for the foreseeable future.

Brilliant driving by the truckie in the first clip, did a great job.
4:20 coming out of a car with two arms open is usually a sign of being guilty and trying to put it on the other one's back.
5:40 that is surely the stupidest I've seen this year.

Watching these dashcam videos is truly anxiety inducing, and my God there are some maniacs on the road.

What really pisses me off is the first cars on scene leaving when an accident happens. They better hope they never need help.
That's just so wrong. Pretty sure it's against the law everywhere too.
