Do people watching this think that the military/emergency services should give personnel an opportunity to informally debrief after being involved in a trauma event? It seems formal counselling post event can cause problems, so should there be deliberate opportunity made for informal debrief? to make sense of what happened?
I’ve spoken to police officers who tell that ‘back in the day’ there was opportunity to informally debrief after jobs/between jobs over coffee etc. But that nowadays they are so busy and their whereabouts so scrutinised that there is no opportunity to informally debrief. The traumas are pushed into the mind’s recesses where they accumulate. They don’t get processed. Eventually people accumulate enough of them and enough stress that they are overwhelmed. That seems common with in the police I work with that have PTSD.
Some don't because they have not taken at the right or wrong time to go through what causes it. some who don't go figure. every body will be effected negatively in one way or the other if effected by the cause.
