Barry that was the best vlog, u have done off of Shady, what an incredible journey, I cried when I saw the majestic old lady of the lake what a magic story she tells, that's what u get when u look after, show her love and above all respect her qualities, one strong , capable and thourally enchanting ship. Thankyou for sharing this special part of New Zealand. Now can we go sailing, oh oops there's a hole in the Bucket...dear Barry dear Barry😆🤣😂 🇦🇺🌈
When I was in the RNZAF we deployed to Queenstown with 14 Squadron for Falcons Roost. I got the chance to stay in the engine room of the Ernslaw and stroke the boilers for the first leg of the run up the lake...Loved every minute of it.
I used to have an office on the HMS President moored on The Thames in London. It was always fascinating to go down below and see how the ship was built. Sadly now the entire ship has been broken up. What an amazing journey you've had, loved coming along with you. Get well soon Barry.
My boat is berthed in the Titanic Quarter in Belfast about 150 metres from a steamship very similar to the one you were on. She has been fully restored and is part of the Titanic Exhibition. Her claim to fame. She carried passengers from shore to the Titanic when she stopped off a port, I think Cherbourg France, prior to her fateful crossing of the Atlantic after calling at Queenstown in Ireland. Queenstown is now called Cobh
Thanks Barry - fantastic episode. I was a reactor operator on a nuclear sub over 50 years ago. I was as impressed with your "sneak peaks" of that steam engine room as I was with the one I worked in. It was amazing. Thanks.
What a beautiful ship. I grew up on a steam narrow boat and will never forget the smell of coal powered steam. Thanks for sharing and hope you’re feeling better.
Barry, I have followed you for a short while and absolutely addicted. I am a former Royal Australian Navy man and have served on sail for short periods, that steamer, OMG, what a privilege, and I am so envious mate. Keep up the great work and the adventurous spirit, cheers from Oz, my friend.
Love the Earnslaw with all of its gorgeous, shiny brass fixtures and wood furnishings. Even the boiler room was beautiful and well kept. Great, relaxing video to view. Thanks Barry!
Brings back memories. I was around 10 years old the first time I went on the Earnslaw. I am now 65. My family had driven down from North Canterbury in our MkIII Zephyr for a few days. We stayed in a hotel that was directly over the road from the Earnslaw berth.
She's a beautiful ship on a gorgeous stretch of lake, Barry. I'll agree with you that working steamships are rare these days. However, there is at least one other steamship still plying the waters of this world. The SS Badger passenger and car ferry is the last coal-fired steamship on the Great Lakes. She's been making regular passages on Lake Michigan between Ludington, Michigan and Manitowoc, Wisconsin since 1953, and is still running today.
You can do the whole 2 islands in a month driving in a campervan, but beware I did that and loved the place I was back 2 years later and 20 years later I'm still there!!
Hope you're recovered Barry. Thanks so much for including your travels around South Island. The whole country looks gorgeous and the Kiwis appear so friendly. Can't wait to sail there myself :)
The sneaky cams were so worth it - now that's what I call an engine! Working on something like that would be a labour of love as far as I am concerned.
I was privileged to grow up in the lakes area. The Earnslaw was a big part of my life. She was built in Dunedin and taken apart and freighted to Kingston (south arm of the lake) and reassembled. The smell is still in the back of my nose the coal and oil a smell that is or has disappeared. Thanks for this great video. .
As a south islander was fascinating watching you travel around god’s own,yes we’re extremely privileged to live in this paradise. Thank you and speedy recovery 💜
No don't take this the wrong way but the last four episodes you you have definitely proven that you are class act Globetrotter, it's a privilege to watch your show Barry, I truly mean that.
It's great you had the privilege to be in the bridge steering the steamer, Barry ! Thanks for the video, especially for the footage of the engine room. Greetings, Frank
This is pretty awesome. When I returned from my last adventure down in NZ, I was working in one of the last cartography departments at Ordnance Survey in Southampton and all the older cartographers asked me if I'd seen the Earnshaw in dock in Queenstown and as the were flicking through my photos...yup, I did and they were all chuffed to see it.
Aha ! Top marks for your filming of the bowels of the engine room on Earnslaw , Barry . Such a fine small ship she is and well cared for maintenance wise . Sorry to see Shaddie with a hole , oh well , get somebody else to fix it while you have a beer with the boys , you`re far too tired to be bothered with more repairs eh ? A small delay upon departure , but cheers anyway Barry.
In the other colonies we call that accelerator pedal a "Hotfoot". What a great adventuror you are. Thanks so much for sharing the world and it's geographic wonders. The awesome people as well.
We missed the steamship but we did stay in a sheepherders cabin heated with a potbelly wood stove just above the shotover. Heard the boats every day, went further south and panned for gold. Got a few flakes. Also ran into sheep traffic jams. Loved the south island. Thanks for bringing these memories back to us from 1999 !!
Shady will be jealous of your latest adventure. Great travels and a beautiful documentary of a great ship. Enjoyed your confession at the Irish ☘️ pub!! Murph
Thanks for the memory Barry. Some thirty years ago I was on the last cruise of the summer and good old Earnslaw was resplendent in bunting and was swinging to a band as we cruised and drank wine in celebration.
Of all the vids you have share this one for me hits home. It was my luck to convert a wooden boat to steam after buying a steam engine in Vancouver B.C. 1912 what a historical adventure you had. Thank you for letting in on this ship and you.
She’s a real gem alright, I’m a retired fitter and turner so it’s always very interesting to see the steam engine working, so many mechanical parts all working in sync, I’ve been on it twice and will again next time I visit Queenstown,
Lovely vessel Barry thank you. When (if?) you get to Sydney, come and see for an outing. Waratah is an even older, 1904 steam driven tug boat. Yes, definitely steam driven. Triple expansion engine, stokers shovelling coal, you name it. Oldest steam powered ship still in operation. Yes she is still operating. She's in survey and takes loads of passengers around Sydney harbour on a regular basis. I used to crew on her and it's such a huge privilege to take such a piece of history out.
Thanks for another great video, Barry. If you're ever in Canada during the summer you could take a ride on the 125-foot R.M.S. Segwun. Built in 1887, she is North America's oldest operating mail steamship, sailing out of Gravenhurst, Ontario. Hope you're feeling better. Cheers!
Loved watching your experience of steering the boat. My claim to fame (as far as steering boats go) was I was in the U.S. Navy onboard an aircraft carrier. I was what is known as a "Master Helmsman." I was able to steer the ship during flight ops, docking, and the most harrowing, alongside replenishment with other ships.
She is a very nice ship i see her on a weekly trip to queenstown on my job.. The Old Lady of the Lake will live on for many years... Thanks Barry and Cheers for the videos... John....
There are a couple of steam-powered ships operating on Lake Zurich, Switzerland. They are the "Stadt Rapperswil" and the "Stadt Zurich"...both steam paddle-wheelers.
Thank you Barry for taking us along. I loved your choices of places to visit . The scenery was spectacular and the steam ship was my favorite exhibit. As a old xsea dog now, I look forward to your travel and adventures on an older boat which makes it so much more interesting waiting for the unexpected that only a vintage vessels can bring. Carry on mate!
Another Barry good video what a great time you had! That steamer is amazing and how lucky I were to get the engine shots! Stay safe keep cool and see you soon.
Keep a small assortment of SS hex head screws in various sizes. They can be screwed into small hull holes, from inboard, with a bit of sealant and will stop leaks until a proper fix can be arranged. Nice tour Barry, refreshing change of pace. Now, back to sailing and beer drinking!
Barry, I have been watching and enjoying your video's for several years, thank you, thank you for allowing me to come along for the journey, and all the enjoyment therein. This episode is particularly enjoyable because I believe i've fallen for a steamship, who would have thought! Fair Winds and following Seas.
Wonderful steamship, cut through the water like a knife. Beautiful brass controls, and the steam engine and boiler view, well, a thrill. Gotta get down to NZ and see that vessel!
Hope you feel better soon. Perhaps time has moved on and you are all better now. I really appreciate that you share your adventures. Love to watch. Thanks.
Barry I'm so glad you took the hop down to South Island and that we all went with you. Can you even imagine being back home and seeing that you missed that adventure? Wowzers, no way man! Be well.
110 years. And she still works well. And she is still beautiful. Amazing!
So inspiring!
SS Earnslaw was sent out as a set of parts that took three months to assemble!
I'm so happy for you Barry, thank you for sharing that amazing experience.
What a beautiful boat.

Solid fuel injection engineer 👌
You’ve done South Island proud Barry. 🙌🙌🙌
I used to have an office on the HMS President moored on The Thames in London. It was always fascinating to go down below and see how the ship was built. Sadly now the entire ship has been broken up. What an amazing journey you've had, loved coming along with you. Get well soon Barry.
The ship is a virtually living creature. Beautiful.
I just love that Steam ship. It is fantastic that she still survives. 🙂
Yes but her top deck passanger cabin windows ruin the look of the TSS Earnslaw ship.

Barry it was wonderful to see your delightful face as you filmed this amazing ship 🚢👍👍👍👍💕
What a beautiful ship. I grew up on a steam narrow boat and will never forget the smell of coal powered steam. Thanks for sharing and hope you’re feeling better.
I say Barry is an honorary Kiwi now, congrats Barry!
HISTORY ‼️HISTORY ‼️ How fantastic that was. I was amazed. What a blast, I would have loved to come along. WOW.
What a treat to see a ship built the same year that my father was born. It brought me some insite of that era. Thanks.
Love the Earnslaw with all of its gorgeous, shiny brass fixtures and wood furnishings. Even the boiler room was beautiful and well kept. Great, relaxing video to view. Thanks Barry!

I had the privilege of riding on the SS Badger in 2019. It was an awesome experience!
New Zealand looks amazing, I’d love to go but looks like one of those places that would take a lifetime to explore.
Come anyway Matt, there is room for more 😊
You can do the whole 2 islands in a month driving in a campervan, but beware I did that and loved the place I was back 2 years later and 20 years later I'm still there!!

There are a couple of steam-powered ships operating on Lake Zurich, Switzerland. They are the "Stadt Rapperswil" and the "Stadt Zurich"...both steam paddle-wheelers.
There are more steamers on other Swiss lakes, like the five still in use on Lake Lucerne.
Sick boat & sick Captain - hope you both recover soon! Another Brilliant episode, thanks, Barry!
What a gorgeous ship! Thanks again for taking us along. My daughter is in Queenstown, say hello 😄
Nice scenery from steamship. And you touched the polished copper 😮😥😉
A beautiful craft, Barry. How I'd love to get my hands on the wheel - and ring that telegraph too!
Shamefully vicarious but I could feel that wheel.
Barry , well done an exceptional episode!
Thank you Barry for taking us along. I loved your choices of places to visit . The scenery was spectacular and the steam ship was my favorite exhibit. Thanks for that short distraction . Enjoyed the camper bids and South Island. Now get better, fix the boat and have a beer.
Seeing you on the bridge, I couldn't help smiling. I must admit though I'd have tried to bluff the other way - I find the oily bits fascinating!
Great work; perfect vid length and vid quality. Thanks for bringing us along.
That ship's engine was amazing. Steam engineering is the shiz!
Have a speedy recovery👍👍👍👍👍

Brilllllliant Barry - being cheeky- nice move! Toasted a few anchor ⚓️ beers to you the last couple weeks out sailing ⛵️ Cheers mate!
That's some special history. Thanks for sharing these wonderful stories.
Barry, you honestly have the best channel on UA-cam.
Thank you. I'm glad I got to see that from your perspective. Steam Riverboats helped build Montana, USA.
Been out of touch for a while and finally can get back to catching up on my favorite sailing channel.
Hope you feel better soon. Perhaps time has moved on and you are all better now. I really appreciate that you share your adventures. Love to watch. Thanks.
Just made my Friday Barry! Cheers!
Many thanks for allowing me to go with you.
Barry I'm so glad you took the hop down to South Island and that we all went with you. Can you even imagine being back home and seeing that you missed that adventure? Wowzers, no way man! Be well.
