I'm only 18, so I wasn't around to see the glory days of the MD-80, but this plane was really what got me interested in aviation, and I'm going to miss it.
I’ve had the fortune of traveling to many different places on all types of planes, but the best flight I’ve ever been on was an MD-80 from ORD-SEA. An empty flight on a cold and foggy night. Smoothest takeoff I’ve ever experienced and a nice, relaxing 3 hours the entire way. I also flew on the MD-80 for my first international flight from STL-YVR. Great times.
ThAAnks 4 w@tch!ng, my man mylos! Sad for the chapter closing but happy for the memories made. A song I like say "every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end" ;)
Thanks 4 watch!ng yes, I am very glad too... also very happy I was able to film as much as I did. Was a great experience and always will be a happy memory for me.
Thanks for watch!ng I hear that some museums around the country will be getting an MD-80 or parts of an MD-80 for their displays so I think at least a few of them will. :)
Hi Jay! You might remember watching a video of a kid planespotting a few years back. I just wanted to say that your comment meant a lot to me and thanks.
A pink tug? Wow. Great shots of the final docking and push back from the gate...I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said! I remember watching 99carnot's videos from DCA (RIP), which featured plenty of American Mad Dogs. I don't know if it made him happy seeing them whoosh over his head, JT8D's screaming, but it sure put a smile on my face. So long, AA Super 80.
I too enjoyed watching 99carnot's videos... this aircraft was a regular at so many airports across the country that even though it is sad to see this chapter ended, it is wonderful to see how many people have a personal connection to this airplane. Thanks for watch!ng, my friend! More to come soon.
Fantastic shot of the American Airlines Flight 80/9605 McDonnell MD-80 arriving and departing at Chicago O'Hare International Airport from Dallas then to Rosewell mate
Coincidentally and sadly, American Airlines Flight 191 departed from that same gate, K5. But great video! Love the Super80 and we will miss them a lot.
Thanks for watch!ng It is for airplane fans like yourself that I put in the time and effort to capture as much of this kind of an event as I can... yes, sad to see it go but the memories will always be with us.
Thank-you Jay for taking the time to cover another milestone in our civil aviation history. You will have to forgive me for merely skipping through the speech. All too often speeches from company executives turn out to be nothing more than a non-filling-that-still-leaves-me-hungry “word salad”. Nevertheless, I sincerely offer my condolences to those who are “Mad Dog” fans. For we all have laments tied to certain aircraft that somehow tagged us with memorable events whenever they cease service. Despite whomever inherited the design and re-designated the model name, to me they all remain variants of the original DC-9. However, it is ironic that Boeing ultimately took over the development of an aircraft from the Douglas Aircraft Corporation, which was once Boeing’s fierce rival. As far as this particular aircraft, N984TW, according to airfleets.net it entered service with TWA in December 1999 and was the last MD-80 built. American Airlines acquired the aircraft after it purchased the bankrupt TWA (Hand over the heart, and TWA used to operate out of "H" concourse), which gives it close to 20 years of useful work. Your entire video (minus the speech) did rekindle some memories for me. My first flight on a jet aircraft was on an American Airlines CV-990, which left from gate K4. However, dad did snap a black and white of my little brother and me in front of a window that had a 707 parked at gate K5 in the background. As far as flights on a DC-9 or whatever is the current designation, I have flown both in coach and first class. The flights themselves were rather uneventful. The only difference was that the first class seats were more comfortable, and it was nice to be nursing a couple of Bloody Marys (early morning flights) before the aircraft pushed back from the gate. About the only surprising thing to me about this final flight, that is different from other last flight videos is that there are no signatures on the aircraft. Usually, anyone who had been associated with a certain aircraft model affixed their signature to the skin somewhere with a magic marker. Other than that, the only other thing I noticed was the “MD80” stenciled next to the yellow mark to denote an aircraft’s stopping point at a gate. I guess American will get around to painting over “MD80” with another aircraft type one of these days. Maybe we will get lucky and see “SST” (AKA: Boeing 2707) - HA!
Thanks for including the information about the aircraft andd some personal history as well. I always enjoy hearing that personal touch and what content in my video means to you. You will be happy to know that some of the ground crew signed the aircraft near the bottom of the radome. Even in 4K this is probably somewhat hard to make out. Also, many passengers, employees and even yours truly went onboard the aircraftand were sure to leave our best wishes, gratitude, notes, etc. on the interior with magic marker. I'm sorry I didn't get video of this because we were all busy writing instead of filming but rest assured, it did happen! Thanks for watching, Guerry! I don't blame you for skipping through the speech :D Long live the DC-9 and it's many variants.
Wonderful video! Of course, I’m old enough to have flown on DC-8s, DC-10s, L-1011s. I’ll miss the old 80/DC-9, because it was so comfortable, and if you were seated upfront, quiet as a church. PS - I enjoyed the Buffalo story. I lived there for four years, and often flew American in some bad conditions, although mostly on the 727 and DC-10.
Thanks for watching! Wish there would have been more time for storytelling since I especially enjoy that aspect of aviation but I'm glad to hear you enjoyed. Wish I could have had the opportunity to have flown on an L-1011 but thankfully at least I also have had the experience of flying on Dc-9s, Dc-10s and such. Great to have you stop by!
My first plane ride or jet ride was on a MD 80 in 2001, but for Delta. I was a soldier in the US Army then flying from Fort Lee ( Richmond), VA to Fort Bliss ( El Paso), Texas. As Bliss was my first duty station .
Very nice. I only wish the would have done a powerback away from the gate! Suprising, not one captain has done so and last chance to do one. Old school too
I agree that would have been the ultimate... but you know how people freak out about that nowadays. Too much noise, too worried something will get damaged. Thanks for watching!
Fortunately I was on a flight departing from Atlanta many years ago. D concourse was American Airlines. We did a power back. The plane was a 727. By the way D Concourse was the last concourse.
Last arrival & push back from where? Can’t see the red flag! Must be an important route! Super 80 send-off from? To? Oh dear...retirement to Roswell, NM! So sad! It’s such a long, slim-lined, beautiful plane with a unique silhouette. Why is service stopping? Not economically efficient anymore? What a history...
Arrival and pushback in this video are at Chicago O'Hare. Yes, this aircraft is considered out-dated and much too loud for the modern public's sensitive ears. Thanks for watch!ng
I worked ramp sevice on plenty AA MD-80s & 727s back in the late 80s. Amazing how much luggage, freight & mail would fit into the belly of these planes.

Last flew her on a route from DFW to ORD over a year ago, the plane has a long service history but the modern comforts of flying a 737 or A320 with better fuel burn finally pushed her out the door. If you want a loud uncomfortable flight Delta is still running the old Mad Dog, I'm surprised the pushed the MD out the door, AA is not having a great time with cancellations amid their struggle with their mechanics. My last nerve with AA was a delayed flight to MCO, and then a cancelled flight back to ORD.

One of the most baffling things is that between the MD-11 and the MD-90, the MD-80 is the only one that's known as the Mad Dog.
