- Santa Fe M-160 Doodlebug on it's run on July 6th, 1994 from Garland to the edge of Fair Park in Dallas, Texas on the KCS tracks. See a piece of history as the last operating M-160 glides along the rails with the historically accurate 36 chair / observation car #3197 in trail. A sight to behold! The Doodlebug and #3197 made this trip at least 5 times in 1994.
This M-160 was built in 1931 using a Brill Motorcar body.
It was used on the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe rural branch lines in Amarillo, TX and Wichita, KS.
The service ran from Carlsbad to Clovis by way of Roswell thru 1967.
Wearing it's Warbonnet paint scheme, it is now on display at the "Museum of the American Railroad" in Frisco, TX.
Car #3197 "Cavern" was reassigned in 1947 to Clovis-Carlsbad and seating was reduced to 36 leg rest chairs. Used with M190 and M160. Sold in 1968 to Southwest RHS, later Age of Steam, now Museum of the American RR (Frisco, TX). One of only two AT&SF round end observations not rebuilt to flat or blunt ends. This car was built originally as a spare car for the regular "El Capitan" Budd equipment and used only when one of the regular cars was seriously bad-ordered. - Авто та транспорт
A baby Chief, classy little outfit. Great horn too!
Love Doodlebug M-160. Never knew she ran recently. Along with a beautiful horn, Beautiful paintwork too. And of course, very nice video
Great sequence with a vintage pioneer!
I've seen this car several times, but didn't know it ran! Sounds very good too.
This is fantastic. Ive never seen one of these before and I love it. Thank you so much for sharing
The M-160 is still operational. It was used to assist with some switching just last week.
I'm very pleased to hear that I sincerely hope that they will use it to run passenger trains with the museum when the building is complete I want to hear the sound of that beautiful horn and classic pneumatic Bell and hopefully this secondary roof-mounted horn
I love the Doodlebug as well!
That's a rare species!, seems to be powered by a V6-567B.
Love that horn
I wish Santa Fe didn’t merge with Burlington Northern. It’s nice seeing the Warbonnet paint scheme.
We are like that it was bought by BN at least, they take care of most of the old warbonnets, if it were anyone like union pacific, they would repaint them
Unbelievable!!!
Awesome catch!
The horn of M-160 Santa fe is Nathan P7.
Actually talk to one of Guys of the museum of the American railroad he made that horn himself
Is a Nathan m3
awesome train video
I never knew that they existed.
Does anyone know what year and what Railroad that Nathan M5 horn was produced on the m160
I rode it Carlsbad to Clovis in 1948.
Sounds like a Reading Northern SD40
But with a few less chimes. I see what ur saying there
Sounds like a Nathan M5.
Great video Neil was wondering if you have any videos or anything showing the route if the Santa Fe from Fair Park in Dallas to Garland trying to figure out the old route especially in the area if White Rock Lake did it intersect with the Cotton Belt and KCS or did it have its own route into Garland any info would be greatly appreciated
Thanks and best regards, J.R.
JR, When we shot this video they were running on the SF track from Garland almost to Fair Park, but that was the only part that we covered. The Doodlebug would leave the Garland station and go just north of Fair Park and then would return to the Garland Station. Neil
2199 where have I heard that number before?
Is that an Old Cast Nathan P horn I hear mounted under the pilot?
TrainTrackTrav operaters side top on the nose
Where is this location?
Dallas, Texas
Is that Doodlebug still operational?
As far as I know it is, it in the Museum of the American Railroad in Frisco Texas, it is listed as "Serviceable"!
That probably means it can run but needs some parts or fuel or something.
It still runs. They used it for switching there new yard around as recently as last month. There are some videos of it running in Frisco from January/December.
And I saw it there! I got videos of the museum uploaded!
d00dlebug
First of all what the heck is that I've never heard of it or seen it till now
IT IS A RAIL MOTOR CAR, THE PREDECESSOR OF DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES!
THEY GOT THEIR START AS LIGHT WEIGHT PASSENGER EQUIPMENT
FOR SMALL PASSENGER OPERATORS!
THIS WAS THE START OF DEVELOPING THE ELECTRIC TRACTION SYSTEMS BEHIND INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES! AS THE MOTOR CARS BECAME LARGER AND THE LOCOMOTIVE SIZE DIESEL
ENGINES WERE DEVELOPED
GREW INTO THE DIESEL FREIGHT AND PASSENGER LOCOMOTIVES OF TODAY!
THIS PARTICULAR CAR STARTED LIFE WITH A LARGE GASOLINE OR DISTILLATE ENGINE THAT WAS REPLACED BY A GENERAL MOTORS 567 V-6 ENGINE OF 600 HORSEPOWER!
what in the name of the godd...just when i thought i knew it all. it doesnt even look like it has traction motors let alone an engine PAAAHAHAHHAAAAAA!
My special needs son really likes trains 🚆🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋🛤🚂 especially railcars like that one he thinks they are highly underrated and all should be preserved, restored, and put back into service on lines that are not used anymore carrying both passengers and mail. He also thinks that Progress Rail, Siemens, or any other company that builds railroad equipment should build clones of these and the departments of transportation should rebuild railroad lines that were abandoned and removed and run these on them. He recommends that the museum that owns this railcar should lease to the Midland Railroad in Kansas, the Grand Canyon Railway in Williams, Arizona or the Verde Canyon Railroad as well. Since all are tourist railroads and use former ATSF railroad lines he thinks this motorcar would fit right in.
