Vintage Cleanermate VHS Tape Cleaner From The 90's: Unboxing & Tutorial Video.

  • In this video I open up a brand new 'Cleanermate' brand VHS Video Tape Cleaner from the early to mid 90's and show how it's used. I also clean a problem (Moldy) VHS tape with a recording of MTV's Headbangers Ball: With Nuclear Assault (March 3rd, 1990).
    These cleaners are perfect for cleaning moldy or dusty tapes. This is the first time I've ever used one, but it's pretty easy to figure out.
    Please excuse my amateurish video skills, I'm used to using older Hi8/Sony cameras.
    Unfortunately I had to upload and edit this video TWICE now thanks to youtube and UMG for giving me yet another strike because about 10 seconds of the Slaughter video had audio. I'm extremely fed up with the strikes. Sorry guys, but eventually I'm going to have to delete a lot of my stuff unwillingly due to all of this ridiculousness. As much as I hate doing that, I would like for my channel to stay up. I will be uploading informative, documentary-type videos that have to do with classic horror films and/or classic heavy metal, and every once in awhile I might be able to upload a video from bands who send me their master tapes to digitize and upload. But it's come to the point where I have to prove to youtube that I have full permission to upload everything I have on my channel, otherwise my account will get terminated, again. I'm just tired of the weekly threats I'm receiving from youtube, over and over again threatening to terminate or permanently ban my channel because of 5 seconds in a video. It's ridiculous. Believe me, I would love to keep uploading the same content that I have been for years, but it looks like I can't. And eventually youtube is going to become a very bland and boring place due to all of these stupid regulations. There will be virtually very few, or no more people like me who have the skill to clean up and remaster rare videos of forgotten bands. I still have countless videos that I will now be unable to upload, because providing proof that I was given permission is very difficult. I would have to go through thousands of emails, and I don't record all of my phone conversations that I have with band members or directors.
    If you have any questions about this video, feel free to ask.
    And to all of my long-time subscribers: I sincerely apologize. I can full understand your frustration. Believe me, this isn't my choice. And I hope you guys understand.
    One last thing, if you enjoy my old uploads, and you are on Facebook, be sure to check out my 'Pepsi Power Hour' Facebook page on there. Under the circumstances, that is the best I can do, thanks to this whole youtube problem.
    Thank you, and please enjoy this video. There will be more to come soon.

    Now that's a rare gem! You don't see those everyday. I've recently got mine too although it's being sold as a used item but I'm still happy that I got it. Now I need to buy isopropyl alcohol before I can get working on cleaning those VHS tapes.

    • @ThrashMetal1988
      @ThrashMetal1988  4 роки тому +2

      I use denatured alcohol personally, it’s a little more expensive but it doesn’t leave any residue and it still kills all the spores that are left from the mold.
      These cleaners are really excellent.
      I just found one for Betamax tapes brand new on eBay for only $21.
      Some people toss the tapes after they clean them and get what they want off them, but I have all mine stored in a box together in a closet.
      One thing I can tell you is that mixing moldy (or once moldy) tapes with clean tapes is a bad idea.
      Those mold spores can spread, regardless if they’re in boxes or not.
      I always keep them separated just in case, but I don’t toss them.

      @@ThrashMetal1988 Good tip! Also, do you know what kind of material that is on the heads? Is it some sort of cotton? Mines is getting worn out so I planning to make a new one for the heads.

    • @ThrashMetal1988
      @ThrashMetal1988  4 роки тому +3

      I was kinda wondering that myself. It feels almost like sandpaper, but lighter. I don’t think it’s cotton, there aren’t any fibers.
      I don’t know if it’s true or not but I have heard from several people who repair tapes and players for a living, that the fibers from cotton can be really bad for both the film and the gears inside VCRs. I can sorta believe that, and I think that may be why they discontinued all those older VCR head cleaners that used the fiber reel.
      I always use microfiber cloth & q-tips as an alternative, just in case.
      The stuff on those replacement heads almost look as though it’s some kind of paint to me. It reminds me of this white paint that I’ve used to paint models with.
      It seems like the more you use it, the more it either brushes off or gets covered in dirt.
      I wonder if they just sold those replacements separately, or what.
      I bought the Betamax cassette cleaner, when I get that in I’m going to see if those replacements are compatible with this VHS cleaner.
      I’m sure there’s a whole mountain of those replacements sitting somewhere, but whoever has them probably thinks they’re worthless lol.

    To turn the sprokets on a VHS, instead of using your finger (that hurts after a while) just get a sharpie with the cap on it and it works like a charm

    I need one of these so bad! My in-laws have so many moldy tapes of pageants, dance recitals, home movies, etc., and I've been using a sacrificial VCR with the cover taken off so I can hold a flannel cloth with alcohol wrapped around a Sharpie against the tape as it fast-forwards and rewinds, but it has so many little parts in the tape transport that can go wrong, and something like this looks more simple and durable.

    That's an amazing gem you have there. And to think, now with all the software that's out today, if you can back up these types of old tapes, you can further clean up and enhance the quality of the video as well as the audio. Very valuable device you have there!

    I've been looking through hundreds of old videotapes from other people recently, mainly looking for teletext and old continuity. Some of the tapes were extremely mouldy and went straight in the trash - didn't want to risk playing them. If only I'd had one of these devices...

      I’m curious to know, what kind of tapes? Stuff recorded off TV or filmed video is the real important stuff that’s worth saving. That’s why I got into cleaning and restoring them. I noticed how many auctions would go up on eBay that had moldy tapes recorded off TV in a lot for next to nothing, and it seemed like such a shame letting them get tossed.

      I made my own by taking a tape rewinder branded by ( realistic) it's similar size and has a simple flip top. I simply wrap a microfibre cloth damp with isopropyl alcohol aroun( both) sides of the tape not just surface. Then do a full rewind , change cloth and fast fwd. It works probably better than anything like this using rollers.
      That said I'd like a purpose made cleaner like this if it's for sale ?

      There's some other brands that also made these machínes such as Geneva and Kinyo.
      According to the Geneva packagin boxes it does clean mold, and you can tell that it does since the heavy white lines and shaky picture across a VHS it's caused because of mold and after the cleaning all that was removed.

      His name is Phil Buckman, he actually contacted me after I uploaded the first video, super excited because he hadn’t seen the commercials he made in nearly 30 years.
      I thought I added it in the description, I need to update them both.
      He asked if I had the other one from around the same time and I did.
      I’ve got countless commercials from as early as 1974 to the 2000’s.
      He told me he made a couple more too, but I haven’t spotted them yet. Odds are I have them on some tapes from mid-late ‘90, I just haven’t found the others yet.
      He’s a singer now, I believe he’s in a Tom Petty cover band called ‘Petty Cash’.
      You can find him on Facebook, he’s a pretty cool dude. I’ve had a few people contact me after uploading their old stuff, most really thrilled to see it again after so many years. Lots of band members, singers who lost their music videos decades ago from lousy record labels dying off.
      You’d think you could just contact someone who has access to the archive and request a copy, but there’s so much red tape it’s ridiculous.
      I tried helping out the drummer of this band called ‘Citizen Kane’, I uploaded one of their videos, but he said there’s another one too that he’d really love to see again after 35+ years.
      Turns out this website called ‘Historic Films’ actually has both videos in their archive on 2 separate reels, but even him being in the band and having proof that he is who he says he is isn’t good enough.
      You have to be some kind of authorized documentarian with proof and something called a ‘Research Fee’ of $150, just to have some monkey at a desk go through and see if you’re even allowed to have a copy.
      If not, you don’t get your $150 back either.
      Then you need a minimum of $500 for ‘Licensing Fees’, and that’s not even all of it. It’s just absolutely ridiculous how these people work.
      I can understand if someone can’t legally purchase footage, but this guy was actually in the band.
      I’m just happy to help these guys out when I can.

    I've never seen that contraption before but just in the way it is built I know it won't handle mold. Maybe general grime and filth as a once every 5 years cleanup it would work, but I can bet it won't get mold out.

    • @RagingJohnson
      @RagingJohnson 3 роки тому

      The liquid contents of the bottle he drips into the right head is Isopropyl Alcohol. It's a cleaning solution with a high evaporation rate, which is the part that kills mould. As the tape runs its course, the fabric of the head, soaked in the alcohol, wipes along the tape, which is how it gets rid of the mould.

    • @MrWolfSnack
      @MrWolfSnack 2 роки тому

      @@RagingJohnson No dude, that's not what I am saying. I know how to remove mold. Look at the way it is constructed. The foam cleaning roller is only some tiny little pad on the top side of the tape. Mold can and will grow on both sides of the tape as well as the reels. That little pad will not get both sides, and it will clog up with debris within 30 seconds. This "machine" is only for general maintenance, like for taking care of those cheap kids tapes that always get bad tracking, or severely dusty tapes.

      Keep an eye on eBay. There’s a Betamax version on there right now for only $21. The VHS cleaners do pop up. I think they’re just in high demand right now because people know tapes are more or less getting closer to the point where the film is going to rot away anyway, and people want to salvage what they can and get it on DVD / Digital.

    I think you just ruined your cleaner. Maybe a tape with static noice and fall out would be ok to use in the cleaner and help them but to clean mold I think you defiantly need to make a cleaner out of a VCR and open the tapes and clean them. Not safe to put any other tapes in the VCR. Looks like it worked to clean up the pic on the tape but the mold is most likely going to come back if you don’t open and clean the tape.

    • @Anthonybchannel
      @Anthonybchannel Рік тому

      Yeah but if you clean the rollers all around then it should be good for future use.

  • @RandomAcronyms

    Denatured alcohol (ethanol) would be bad for the tape, it's probably rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) and distilled water.

    • @ThrashMetal1988
      @ThrashMetal1988  4 роки тому +1

      Actually it works better for me. Denatured alcohol doesn’t leave a residue like Isopropyl alcohol does, but it evaporates much more quickly.
      After I ran out of the ‘Cleaning Solution’ that came with the cleaner I started using Denatured, and the tapes dried much faster, plus there’s no residue on the reels afterwards.

      @@ThrashMetal1988 Cool, thinking about it a bit more, it's only 8 or so drops of ethenol used to clean 100s of feet worth of tape in the cassette, so it doesn't really have the time to eat any of the plastic before it evaporates.

    • @ThrashMetal1988
      @ThrashMetal1988  4 роки тому

      Jayson Wills It’s definitely worth trying, I’ve been using Denatured to clean my tapes and my equipment for awhile now and it works much better.
      Plus, you’re much more likely to find it during this whole COVID virus, although it’s a little more expensive than regular Isopropyl alcohol.
      If you are looking for it at Walmart, you’ll notice that it will be in the section with the paint thinner and solvents section, usually in a blue tin, the brand name is usually ‘Klean Strip’ and you’ll see that it says ‘Fuel’ in large letters, and right underneath it says ‘Denatured Alcohol’.
      It’s priced around $7 plus tax in my area, but I recommend just trying it out. It will dry very fast and because it doesn’t leave a residue, I think it works better than Isopropyl. I always use it to clean my VCRs and Laserdisc players, recently I acquired a Sony VO-5850 3/4” U-Matic player, and I cleaned it out really well with it. Although the thing was practically brand new, and even came with the original box.
      I’m planning on making a new video just about the U-Matic player, because I purchased it for less than $180 and the thing shockingly works like brand new.

      @@ThrashMetal1988 Isopropyl alcohol does not leave a residue, at least the decent 99% pure stuff doesn't. In fact it is denatured alcohol (ethanol) that contains additives and can leave behind residues as well as sometimes causing damage. I cleaned my tape with a baby wipe works 100%

    • @ThrashMetal1988
      @ThrashMetal1988  5 років тому

      I personally wouldn’t.
      Baby wipes would leave a surface residue. Not to mention that they are cotton, and cotton would leave fibers on the reel.
      That’s why people use those microfiber Q-tips instead. The fibers from cotton can cause future damage to your VCR’s gears and heads.
      Plus alcohol kills the spores that has grown which resulted in the tape becoming moldy to begin with.
      That’s like putting a band aid on a broken leg.
      It’s only a temporary fix, and the mold will eventually come back.
      Either way, good luck with it.
