I got to know Ruby when we all lived down in Torquay in 1985/86. She was a lovely unpretentious soul, who always made us smile. Her last husband was absolutely vile to her, Ray Lamarr managed to spend everything she ever earned as soon as she passed. He would argue with her in the pub, and call her all sorts of names on The Strand late at night. God bless you Ruby, forever in our hearts.

Ahh bless I used to drink with her in the hole in the wall and the torbay hotel and remember when we entered the Hole in the wall as ruby was dressed as Maddona

No female singer, during the years of peace, ever captured the heart of the Nation like Ruby, but, dispite her stardom, she remained a simple wee lass from the Donegall Rd, Belfast, RIP Gentle Lady.

Her voice was sadly not what it once was but it is so wonderful to hear Ruby actually sing this song. I once saw Ruby at the Monaco ballroom in Hindley near Wigan. She was Tiny in stature but big of heart

Nobody should run away with the idea that this video represents the sort of voice that Ruby Murray had when she was at the top of her profession. Her voice was shot at in the example shown and it is sad to see how such a pure voice had deteriorated over time.

I think her tired old voice adds a certain poignancy to the song.
And I am typing this with my eyes leaking.

I am a bass player and was doing a gig somewhere ( I have a feeling it was the Leicester area) and I was told that we had a surprise act to back. She was escorted onto the stage looking very frail, we were given the dots and we played for her.... it was a privilege and honour to play for her, she was very courteous and friendly, It must have been around this time.... thank you Ruby.

I understand what you're saying, but she is older, and maybe she did drink too much. However, having said that, I think this is a really touching performance and her voice, although weaker, is unmistakable. She must have been terrified to do this after so many years and my heart goes out to her. God bless you Ruby.

There is a short documentary on here about Ruby's life filmed very shortly before her passing and it's very moving to say the least, Ruby was only around 60 at the time of filming and sadly she looked very old & frail, way more than her 60 years, I would highly recommend watching it if you are a Ruby Murray fan, she was truly a BEAUTIFUL & PURE SOUL!! that had very sadly slipped into many years of heavy alcohol use from the pressures of life and her strenuous schedule which lead to her untimely passing in 1996 at the age of only 61 from liver cancer 😢😢

What would you give to have a voice like Ruby Murray. I don't think anyone knew what to do with such a gift and she probably didn't believe it belonged to her. Embrace your talents they belong solely to you💜

@davidwalsh66 How is it? What's wrong with old age?

    • @davidwalsh3439

There is nothing wrong with old age. Ruby wasn't old she was a wreck due to alcoholism.

Ruby had a throat operation as a child hence the husky voice...not sure when this was sung but could be nearer the 90s? Still a lovely voice.

Wikipedia says she had liver cancer which she died of and she was only 61 .Not a great innings . She also struggled with an addiction to alcohol which probably contributed to the cancer. Sadly once the liver is damaged it becomes susceptible to cancer. Young drinkers please beware. There is a resonance between her and Ami Whitehouse - a bad judge of drink and men .
