This was a good one. The 20-year-old guy who had a tough childhood seemed like a good guy. Really liked how you came back to his story after it was interrupted by the window being smashed.
Yeah well said. I was really listening to what he had to say and then when the window interrupted him I was spewing but when Span went back to him and got him to continue I thought that was fantastic. Seems there's quite a few of us in the comments who were really impressed with that young fella and feel there's a really good young man there who just needs an opportunity ( apprenticeship of similar), a chance at learning a trade or skill set which he can use to better himself and create a wonderful life for himself. If he's reading this I wish him all the best and I'd love to see Span go back and pay him a visit one day. Cheers.

I grew up in Warrawong, my mum grew up in Warrawong and my dad grew up in Berkeley.
Im so grateful to all the amazing teachers and youth workers in these areas - I can't imagine a tougher gig - but fuck - one person believing in you can make a world difference.

For reference, Wollongong was a successful steel mill back in the day, and also a cultural center for young creatives. AC/DC and lots of other groups made their name at pubs and venues in the Gong before heading abroad. Eventually the steel mill dried up and everyone was left without income, so it became a drug hotspot and long-term result is what you see today.
well actually if you go back a little further, adam and eve were chilling when a snake approached eve and convinced her to take a bite into an apple, which long-term has resulted in what you see today.
Yes they closed down the mill and the govt didnt think of opening up industry to keep the youth occupied

Interesting watch. Please note that this is such a small snapshot of what Wollongong is. It's a beautiful area and the drugs and crime are confined to small areas. 99% of people here aren't living this life and don't see it while that go about their day. But it definitely exists

I grew up in Warrawong in the fifties.Housing Commission.Never met anyone who went to gaol.Back in those days a lot of the tenants had jobs.I never met anyone who did drugs either.Wollongong is not a small town.However social problems have worsened every where in Australia.

My mum's family grew up in Berkeley in the 50's-60's and back then it was a brand new suburb for people working at the Steelworks, one of those prosperous and safe "no-one locked their doors" kinda neighbourhoods. Then over time a lot of the Steelworks jobs dried up and places like Berkeley and Warrawong suffered, crime went up and the people who could afford to left.

Hey Spanny, the blokes in prison who said they were from the Gong probably meant the surrounding areas. The Illawarra is a large place with plenty of low socio-economic suburbs, Wollongong being the central hub. Everyone from Illa just says they're from the Gong which probably massively inflates the perceived numbers.

Wollongong is pretty interesting cause it has the old industries like the steel works and coal mines with the working class aussies then it also has all the uni students, like polar opposites.

He's not wrong when he says they mix the expensive areas with the poorer areas. It's a bit jarring to hear the statistic that Warrawong & Berkeley rank right at the top in the state for violent crimes. I grew up in Lake Heights (smack bang in between Warrawong & Berkeley) in the 80's & 90's and I never really felt as though I was living in a rough area. Hell! Even as recently as 6 or 7 years ago, I was living one street away from Legoland in Warrawong, and I used to drive through there all the time to go to the shops (plus when I used to go jogging along Northcliffe Drive, I would always pass the entrance of Legoland) and I never felt particularly threatened. Though I remember my ex never felt safe when we lived there (and she grew up in Merrylands in Western Sydney! 😂)...in hindsight, maybe I was just oblivious or maybe I was desensitised 🤷♂️ We lived across the road from a dealer and my ex hated that fact. I always saw it as a positive because I knew that his customers would never cause trouble so close to his home because it would draw unwanted attention to him. LOL!

If you research who founded it you’d see that historically Wollongong is a dark place, but lots of hope

I am a gong girl through and through grew up in Dapto, Bellambi and Berkeley. Like any area some good some bad but things have calmed down since the 80s, 90s. Berkeley is great now it has cleaned up since then.
I'm from woll9ng9ng but moved away in 1997, those erea's were bad back in the 90s,
To be a true Gong girl you need to have slept with your dad, had a baby to your uncle and at least have 3 kids and 2 babie dadies and a ceno check

I’d be really interested if you could do a Canberra hood. We have a few places here that are pretty rough and have some decent history! People think Canberra is all fancy but it definitely has its rough parts too!

Grew up in Warrawong for 34 years from the mid 70's, migrant background, went to Warrawong High school where it was very multicultural , Aussies were in the minorities, we kids did lots of `shopping` at Kmart and David Jones (both non existente now ) very posh back then. First Macdonals in Illawarra opened in Warrawong , I won 1st prize of all Illawarra schools poster compentition to celebrate its openning, won cheque for $5, certificate (still have it) and Mac vouches for a year all at a presentation ceremony at Wollongong town hall . Back then Cringila was prety hectic has well,..

Every time i watch one of these into the hoods it just brings me back to my upbringing in St Clair, Erskine Park. The 90's seem so far away now but you have a way of bringing back those memories. Much love Spanian.

We were on the poorer end of those who lived in Erskine park, which is right next door to Mt Druitt. I would say our street life was very comparable to that of these areas. We often crossed over into St Mary’s, Colyton, Penrith, the druitt etc.

Myself was also in a heavily mortgaged household where not much was left over and lead to family violence arguing over money.
It's just the term "Mt Druitt" that gets thrown around so loosely by those who watch a video or two but have no idea that it's actually just some suburbs within the Luxford Rd ring that have public housing. But it's just a normal area if you do your thing, go to work and enjoy.
Just a suggestion bro which I think would make your videos even better. If you can get one of those wireless mics to put on the people you’re walking around with, sometimes they’re really hard to hear when they’re not close to the camera and the background music offend drowns them out. Other than that. Keep crushing it

I used to deliver pizzas in and around Mangerton, boys used to get robbed all the time had to meet them up the chicken shop. The amount of bongs people had on their tables and shit.

Funny about the blokes from Wollongong. Same as Gold Coast. I worked as a drug and alcohol counsellor at Woodford CC (Qld). The amount of dudes from Gold Coast I met there was insane (not too mention Caboolture 😅). Meet quite a few blokes who had done time in the old school jails in NSW as well, all good solid blokes, mainly old school crims. Good to hear you're on the straight and narrow now brother, stay strong and stay safe!

I’m from Warilla and lived in Berkeley for several years right up until late 2022. You walked passed my street across from that pizza shop. I worked with youth who lived in that area and were involved in the youth centre. Some interesting people but I never had a problem and would walk around by myself at night as a young woman. There’s the average person in the area with a few people that get themselves into trouble. I wouldn’t say it was a dangerous area.

Good to see those kids at the end going fishing instead of getting into crime.
I returned to Oz from living abroad & thought I’d like to live near the coast. I found places to rent in Berkley & Warrawong but after just driving into the street I decided not to even bother going in for a look. I felt really scared just driving in. Not a place you’d feel comfortable living in.. back in the day Mt Druitt was the worst place, but now they’ve moved up and out and ended up in these suburbs. I couldn’t even speak, just shook my head. These burbs are rough.
Mangerton is 2 minute's away from my unit complex and unfortunately i have an open garage and the amount of people that have tried to steal my motorbikes is crazy i have videos of people with blow torches coming in trying to steal them and everything.
Within 1 year i had about 20 attempts of stealing my dirt bikes. At the end they kept ripping my cameras out i gave up and sold my bikes.
I Recently bought a new registered dirt bike and unfortunately it didn't last long Within 3 months it was stolen.
Im going to get proper camera's drilled in to the wall because its just out of control now.
Only one time i caught 2 junkies in the garage in the day time i chased them all the way to the methadone clinic and one pulled out a blade so a backed off and left it at that.
Should of gone down to bellambi way worse then Berkeley in my opinion. 😂

Only reason so many people "from wollongong " in jail is because people from Bulli to Shellharbour will say they "are from wollongong "...it's like saying your "from bankstown "and you live anywhere between milperra to greenacre to sefton
Amazing how housing is dotted between so many expensive areas. That last area is so close to some of the most insanely expensive houses in Port Kembla
I grew up in the Wollongong area. Went to Berkeley high school but did not live there. Berkeley is not that bad as far as major crime is concerned. In fact living in Wollongong itself can be bad for any child as there is a high rate of unemployment. Most ppl travel to Sydney for work. There is nothing for the kids to do so they get involved in drugs. Living in these areas is definitely a product of your environment how one chooses to live their life. On the rare occasion ppl do change and change the cycle of generational poverty. I’ve seen it happen to many ppl who have come from poverty and chose a better life. Life is a choice and what direction one chooses to take and a good role model to look up is the key! I think Spanian can be that for kids that do not have a good role model in their lives.
Although there are rough areas Wollongong its so cleaned up these days. Don’t come in the comment section saying it’s bad for any child to live in Wollongong lmao we live on the beach and have amazing facilities. Wollongong isn’t what it was when you grew up there 20 years ago.
I grew up in Wollongong, Dapto specifically in the 80s & 90s and I'm doin alright!
I’m referring to the no employment aspect and nothing to do but go to the beach. I did say people travel to Sydney for work. If you find a job with the minimal employment that is offered, then you should be ok.
I grew up there and I’ve seen a lot of ppl excel who chose to either leave the area, like myself or get employment outside of the gong.

I grew up in koonawarra ,then balgownie as a teen,then warrawong,mangerton,then moved up the north coast housing in Grafton,mangerton and warrawong were hoods back in the 90s,looks like not much has changed

Born and raised in that area. It's so much better now than it used to be. Moved to Bega a few years ago. Should come down this way and see Bega and Cooma.
My family grew up here and I was born and raised here, 25 years of my life. Left in 2003 when my upstairs neighbour was murdered.

That release system is probably the best thing for most of them. Imagine getting out of juvenile detention and you have no family, nothing. Straight back into what you were doing, no choice.
My younger brother passed away a few years ago. He was a dad, used to sell jewellery at the market, always paid his way - but he had problems with a racist guy in the houso behind. Always being insulted & antogonised in the street. Once - he just called the guy out for being a racist & the guy STABBED him! The paramedics showed up, looked at my brother & were ready to let him die. If it wasn't for the guy who owned the local shop, coming out into the street & defending my unconscious brother - he definitely would've died. There's always someone good - looking out, in bad communities
