Vintage Sewing Machine Restoration

  • A few weeks ago, I found this old Pfaff 145 industrial sewing machine in a garage sell. It was in pretty bad shape as the table was broken in several places, the feet covered in rust, the hook mechanism was off, and so many other things. But I got a pretty good deal on it, so I bought it, brought it home and decided to restore it.
I bought it for my leatherwork and upcoming projects. It's a real beast with can sew leather up to 20oz/8mm (two layers of 10oz/4mm) at least, so I've been told. I didn't try it yet, but I will.
It started by taking it apart, cleaning everything, removing the rust and giving the feet and the table mechanism a new paint job. The machine itself wasn't in bad condition but needed oil desperately and fine tuning so it can work again properly. I mainly worked on the table and all the accessories to make them rust-free and look nice once again. I use hammer effect metal paint. The motor is a Singer 240V, 2850 rpm, 1/2HP. For extra safety, I checked all the wiring and added an extra breaker (to protect the machine from overload and the kid from trying to use it).
I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I really like it now and I'm sure it will serve me well in the coming years for so many projects I have in mind. I'm pretty sure you will see "the beast" in my future videos as well.
I hope you'll like the video. If so, please give it a like, a comment and share it with friends.

Hi, I just bought the same Pfaff 145 recently and I started cleaning mine (it was in a worse shape than yours). Any idea where to buy spare parts in Belgium ? Where do you buy yours ?

Hi. I didn't need to buy any parts for now, but I found some on amazon.fr and more on aliexpress.com. Good luck for your restauration :)

Hello sir! Great work here and great knowledge of the machine! Well done sir!
I have a similar praff swewing machine in my backyard from my grandfather and it's laying dead. I hope someday to find the time to restore it because it's a piece of art. I will be grateful if you can help me with some advices when this time comes.
Can you please tell me the duration of the whole process? Thank you very much sir!

Thanks a lot Gabriel. Restoring the table took me a couple of days. If the machine is in good condition, it doesn't take too long. Finding parts for a broken machine is a different story. Don't hesitate to reach out, I'll be happy to help it I can.

Hi Red I am doing 2 machines for my shop. What is the black material you used on top of the counter? The machines I am working on are a Textima Claes patcher and a Pfaff 335. Thanks

Hey Guy. It's a chalkboard film I found at my local hardware store. Super easy to use and it gives me the option to write on the table with a chalk pen when I'm working, and I like the idea :)
