- Hola todos! Today we are taking you with us on a walk through of Casco Viejo, Panama! This beautiful area is Panama City's historic district located on a peninsula completely isolated by the sea.
Today Casco preserves the first institutions and buildings of the modern city of Panama. Which is why it is known as Casco Viejo (Spanish for Old Town). In recent years, through controversial gentrification, it has become a tourist hotspot filled with restaurants, shops, hotels, nightclubs, and rooftop bars; while also maintaining the multiple historical sites it has to offer. We highly recommend to go on a walking tour in order to fully absorb all the stories and history Casco has to offer!

Have you guys been out to Amador Causeway? If you go, go around 5ish when it's cooler and families come out. On one side you can see Panama City's skyline and on the other you can see the Pacific entrance to the canal and the Bridge of Americas over it. That bridge unites North and South America. The Causeway was made with dirt and rocks excavated during the contruction of the canal. The Panamanian Goverment refurbished it not long ago. Nice place to hang out.

I was born in Panama in the former Canal Zone. I remember going to the city with my relatives to either go shopping or visit relatives but never visiting the Casco Viejo area.

Fun fact: The first travel abroad by a sitting US president was to Panama. Teddy Roosevelt visited Panama in 1906 to inspect the construction of the canal.

I’ve always wondered about the Darien Gap - I’ve dreamed of driving all the way from Alaska to Patagonia for like 20 years now, and had wondered what made it so impossible to drive through.
How did you decide on Panama vs anywhere else? It seems beautiful and warm and welcoming :)
There is no road between Colombia and Panama. Darien gap is a tropical jungle in Panama side. People use to ship their vehicle from Panama to Colombia or the other way when they are travelling across Latin America.
The Darien gap is a virgin and dense jungle. Panama is reluctant to build highways to open it up because of concerns of more drug trafficking and criminal activities pouring in from Colombia. Kind of what is happening at the US southern border.
Oooh that's so interesting. We also heard that the gap between Panama & Colombia is one of the few places they tell you to avoid here due to the dense jungle (and whatever lives in there🙀🐆) as well as any kind of trafficking from Colombia. Going to that area would be an adventure for sure.
We decided to start with Panama & stay here the longest on our Central America adventure for a few reasons. To start, we were looking into Mexico but it seemed every week there was new bad news out about shootings or violence and so we spoke to a family friend from Mexico City and out of the blue he goes - have you thought about going to Panama? And since he said that there were signs everywhere that we needed to come to Panama! Its funny how things work... We are still going to Mexico later but just to Merida for now. But anyways we were attracted to Panama because it is incredibly safe, lowkey compared to some other touristy destinations, full of history that we didnt know much about, a great place to practice our spanish, and overall it felt like the perfect place to start our international travels ❤🇵🇦
@@JourneywithJenandDrew It would be an adventure for sure. And a dangerous one. Panama does not have an army. But it sure looks like it does in the border with Colombia because of the drug gangs and some time ago (not sure how it is now in Colombia) paramilitary groups from Colombia. Lately, the gap is mostly traveled by migrants from Africa, middle east, Venezuelans and other nationalities who are looking to make it to the US.
@@CharlieBrown0507 we dont and cant have an army (the USA basically prohibited us to has one after the invasion), but we do have the "fronterizos" our border control forces, which are a branch of the police but are trained like special forces with enfasis on their trainning on jungle guerrilla warfare, amphibian strikes and capture of drug dealers sea ships.....it is the closest we have to a train "army"

Great video guys! About the destruction of Panama Viejo, Morgan did not destroyed the city, actually, during the pirate attack, the Spanish governor of Panama, Don Juan Perez de Guzman, set on fire the gunpowder deposit of the city causing the fire that destroyed everything in a medieval style scorched earth tactic…of course he was imprisoned for this later in Lima, since most of the city’s population and infrastructure were lost for his suicidal negligence.

I loved a lot of the info, but there is far more and it has to do with taking control over Panama why the US invaded it. Johnny Harris (youtuber, documentary journalist has a great video on Panama in regards to this)

The church with the golden altar (Iglesia de San José) is where I was baptized. It is from the 1670s.
Casco Viejo is amazing. I was last there in 2011 and it has changed a lot. I hope you are able to enjoy a night out there!

Yeah mostly everything is open! Masks are also enforced outdoors, unless you're at the park or outside working out! Everyone here complies as well.

@@HANGWITHBRE it’s no problem - ask away! We got the booster but it’s not required. Just the vaccine proof or a negative PCR/antigen test from the last 72 hours
first of all, the "newer" buildings are not built from the ground up. they are just renovated old buildings that have been restored to their original glory. so there is no mix of old and modern buildings. just old ones in good condition and old ones in poor condition. and seriously - you didnt know there was a rainy season and a dry season? anywhere in the Caribbean and Central America you need to know that kind of thing.
I was born on 8th street right down the block from the Cathedral. Honestly fuck gentrification. Made my grandmother sell her apartment for under $1000. Every immediate family member was born in or into this apartment. It infuriates me. 😢

I have to read more about the history of Panama, but I’m guessing, if Norriego the dictator , not taken out then Panama would be even the worst country to live in such as like some of the South American take over by dictators one by cartel‘s drugs and government corruption . But one of my Panama friends it’s not one of the safest countries now to be in central on South America.
I would Always be against war and invasions. but , dictators don’t always respect no war, but it doesn’t always happen in real life unfortunately

Panama is a very valuable piece of real estate in the Americas, and the USA has invested heavily into that country in the past 100 years. Panama would be next to NOTHING without American construction, investment and the heavy dose of MILITARY PAID FOR BY US TAXPAYERS for the past 80 years or so. Noreiga and his crowd has turned Panama into a drug cartel - the statement that "thousands of Panamanians died" because of American involvement is PATENTLY FALSE. The US military killed THE BAD GUYS.
