The author does like to from scratch, ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
I found myself wanting to call to you and say, "Don't rotate the scriber - It will make the piece too narrow!" Starting with the scriber perfectly vertical, slide it along the curve keeping it vertical. The result should be an exact match to the shape as far as the width of the material allows. This is the same way we all scribe countertops to fit the unevenness of the wall. For vertical matching like the edge of a tall cabinet against an uneven wall, the scriber is held horizontally. Thanks for the video. Nice looking project.
When scribing I think you need to keep your dog ball flinger perfectly vertical as you move it, your action is more to rotate it.
I'm not certain but that makes sense in my brain!
Loving this series, great progress!
Thanks for sharing your journey! Really enjoy watching someone else struggle...😂
I love the storytelling in these videos
I was going to give you advice on making better videos and about how to better build out an Airstream. Then I realized I don't have a UA-cam channel, have never made a video, and have never built out an Airstream. So I'll just say I love your videos Jason. Keep it up man. Love the channel.
You can never have enough of a variety of clamps in this profession and in large numbers !
"Favorite Color: Green" - I had to check, and you were definitely not lying.
I really enjoy your ingenuity with tackling problems like this as well as your frank admission of feeling your way humourously to solutions.
the scribe explanation is one of the best explanations i've ever heard! ok, i knew how to scribe straight lines, but didn't know the downside of inside curves... great work!
To make your curved piece with the veneer showing you could make a mold and slowly bend it around on work work table. A steaming tube out of PVC pipe and a kettle also helps with bendability. Once in place you can use expanding window foam to fill all of the kerf cuts. Once dry…….voila!
21:34 now that's a useful pro tip Jason!
Green is a wonderful color! I’m a big fan of blue, but I live in the PNW too, can’t live here without loving me some green! 🤣
13:27 you got me! I had no faith and I totally thoughts it was going to break 😂
Hey, maybe you're already aware of this, but have you looked into building walls out of foam? It's about a third of the weight of a traditional stick frame wall, and just as strong if laminated properly.
This build is more or less the exact opposite of @TheDuracellProject, where everything is vacuum formed foam core GRP. I appreciate the craftsmanship on both. I was also prompted to comment here by the weight of this inside wall. Then again, I have seen the truck that will tow this trailer. My euro car frame of reference for towing loads doesn’t apply in the slightest.
Green is my favourite colour too!!! Knew there was something I liked about you!
You may have been able to achieve your goal with the door archway by using a round nose router bit instead of cutting kerfs. I used this method with a 16" wide by 8' long 3/4" piece of melamine. Over the middle 4' length I routed a 1/2 flute about 1-1/2" OC about 3/8" deep. This was for a Pinewood Derby track so it need to be moved around and reused so I had to keep it from breaking. Using kerfs would make it more prone to breaking, as you experienced, due to the sharp corners. The round corners reduce that. I also reinforced it by using 2 3/4" aluminum flat bars. One end of the bar is fixed in position and runs along the fluted side of the board. The other end of the bars have a slot that the screw can travel in as the board is arched. The spacing and depth allows the board to bend to about a 45 degree arc and allows the cars to make a smooth transition from the upper part of the track to the lower portion. Using a narrower round nose bit and some trial and error on the spacing and depth may just due it on the next Airstream you refurbish.
Thanks for all your videos.
You can control the shape of the kerf by cutting a plywood template in the shape of the inside curve. Drill big holes in the template to clamp the kerf in place. Then glue the layers of the curve together. You can even do this with multiple thin layers instead of cutting kerfs. Perfect job for the shaper as you can cnc nice even curves.
Respect to you Sir! You are a beautiful human
A man true to his word! Love it! Green ;)
Love your nonchalant humor😄
Need to make some compartments on the inside of that wall for some storage. Bed side of wall.
I LOL'd at that slow look at the camera on the failed kerf. Love your stuff man
Man, I love your videos. You are so funny. And you make me want to build something every time I watch. Thank you for all you do.
My wife who is a former school teacher said that she handled weird shaped builds by using excessive amounts of butcher paper as a template before using the good stuff for her projects (think cardboard displays and props). Perhaps that might help here? Anyways.... Thanks for entertaining us with your build, good luck with the next part!
Square board=square opening. wicked smart.
Looking great Jason!
When I paneled the inside of my camper, I hot glued patterns that followed the shape of the wall which removed all scribing out of the process. And for your curved door, you should have used bender wood.
If you’d like to contact me, I can send you some photos
Very impressive work, can’t wait for the big reveal.
Look up using a "ticking stick" watching you scribe was agony, still a great series mate.
Start by say your are an amazing wood worker....
Thank you for all your videos...
You were looking for a shop to come to and help with a project...
I'm in Bridgeport ny
Retired electrician
Bought a house on a lake.A attached 2200 sq ft shop was included, go figure anyway well equipped
Need to figure out how to match existing oak cabinet doors to existing cabinet doors. I built the new cabinet boxes.... having trouble matching rail and style profile.. oh yea. Raise pannle matching too..
Looking great can’t wait to see what is next
Jason, you are doing really well on your airstream. It's going to look amazing.
A simple question: how about using hot glue to temporarily adhere the divider wall's top/outer laminate plate layers to the ceiling, and to each other, with hot glue, then sink screws after the total laminate sandwich is cured? Then it's removable. Apol if already suggested: you're so popular with so many comments I can't read them all. Good work!
It is probably by accident, but you actually had some smart ideas.
When scribe always maintain the scribe 90 to the floor to avoid removing the material on the side it will only slide up once you remove the material.
Ahhhhh, what a great way to have my first cup of coffee today... watching Jason carefulerly work on the airstream. ❤
fun build! but that bed looks small. taking 5 inches off each side storage compartment would give you some more room to move around when your sleeping 🤩I really enjoy your videos!
Jason, looking good. The trailer is going to bend, twist, flex and move like a champion rodeo bull. Especially when you go off road. Ask any RV person how much time they spend tightening and fixing after a trip! As you are making things fit tight tight keep this in mind. Keep on keeping on. (You need some Grateful Dead motifs).
Looking forward to next weeks episode! I have complete faith in you.
Great work as always. Really looking forward to what you consider 'better than ok' but really just commenting to boost engagement!
Dont vent plumbing thru the roof, if you can avoid it. That would invite leaks. Use a sure-vent air admittance valve
The black tank must be vented to allow for gas escape. Otherwise sewer gas ends up in the RV.
For the tracing the line, keep the distance holder vertical, this way the plate doesn’t shift in 2 directions.
28:09 is the best thing I've seen in ages.
ok mr Jason, after 10 months of channel enjoyment.... yes I have learnt... I finally understand what 'scribing' means and its just such a brilliant solution to getting "a close fit" i do diy-ing sometimes so maybe i'll oneday use this knowledge but for now its a genuine thankyou.
Excited to see the next vid!
Great looking work
The easiest way is to use a big ticking stick, it is an old tool really easy to make and it is the only thing that can do really complex forms in one go
Thanks!
My morning coffee with another great video thanks for the video the project is coming along great
My favourite colour is also green.
Looking good. Yea, those kind of projects seem to take forever.
Simpler solution. Buy a roll of heavy duty craft wrapping paper and double sided tape. Put little squares of double sided tape on your stud work and stick the heavy duty paper to the wall. Then re-enforce with packing tape, then cut with a box cutter. Then carefully remove your paper and use it as a template to scribe to your plywood, adding a 16th of an inch as a buffer for the cutting blade and sanding. Probably will work?
Watch some of the early Tally Ho (Sampson Boat Co) wooden boat rebuild videos. Nothing is square. They have very clever ways to scribe far more complex curves! Can anyone think of a specific episode with good examples? The hot glue pieces for shaping and the nails for faring curves stuff always seems like magic
I liked your scribing workaround, pretty smart. But you would have been just fine if you kept the tennis ball launcher vertical at all times. You kept it perpendicular to the camper skin, which created an offset. So say your pen was 200mm away from the end, and radii of the camper skin 1000mm, you would end up with a scribed ply and radii 800mm.
Maybe this little adjustment will save you some wood. :)
They make bendable plywood. You can buy it bendable on the 4' or bendable on the 8'. Your videos are cool as hell.
Looking good
Man, I can't wait for the next episode!
Keep the tennis ball launcher or other scribe perfectly vertical when tracing your curve. Rotating the scribe is where the error comes from.
have good bottle of Bourbon in the camper .... every so often have some of it ! it helps with the built !! ask me how i know !! not building out one never again !!
The year was 2050 and he finally finishes his air stream 😂❤
Bendy board for forming shapes.👍🇨🇦
Green! 😅 ❤
Super, wie immer!👍✌
Enjoying the build! Maybe instead of venting theough the roof (chances for leaks) you coukd use an oatey sure-vent?
Festool envy; I got it
I have actually done that, except it was in a carbon fiber racing sailboat that cost 2 million dollars.
"But did this mean I gave up?"
Heck no! Jason's no quitter!
"4 Finger Scribe - you can use 2 Finger or 3 Finger" - lol
Long time watcher, first time commenter; did you consider making the bedroom door a pocket door?
That light though.
I have to agree with you on the decision to build an arched door, it just looks right. I had the idea about the veneer a good minute before you pulled out the Baltic ply, nicely done! I just want to know when you are going to get some work out of the foreman, or is he like all the foremen I've ever had?
If you don't mind me asking why don't you ever soak your wood with spray bottle of water to help it Bend
Loving everything about this series. Just curious...why not 3 1/2? Give yourself the luxury of just using 1x4 or 2x4 material for the wall frame?
Jaw drop at the 21:50 mark! Genius brother... (raises my glass to you) I'll use this trick in the future for sure
Just an idea. On that curved door way, instead of making all those saw kerfs, couldn't you use flexible veneer and build it up from there?
Also, when cutting the curve for the roof line. Wouldn't be easier to vector serveral lines from a fixed point on each door support. Then transfer the line measurement to the larger plywood and cut it. Just saying.
Did you ever consider having just a half or three quarter wall instead of a full wall? Would have made it feel less closed off and claustrophobic. just a thought.
Green
Not thinking the doorway is too small, just thinking who is going to climb over who when someone needs to get out of bed in the middle of the night.
I would have wanted somewhere to stand up near the bed... to be able to get dressed and stuff more easily and in privacy.
Nice work tho. ❤
No favourite colour in your links...just sayin'. Great vid and a fun series - looking forward to following along x
Nice. Bless U. Love ur humor and personality. Can I ask.. do u get saw dust in the pockets
what always surprises me is the thin walls , you have a nine foot or even wider hull .... and the insulation is as minimal as a bikini for the arctics
getting wood wet helps it bend too
I now know why boat builders don’t scribe like that, search boat building template. They always have to fit irregular curves.
Jason, I've been with your channel for a year and a half to two years. I know you have a plan, and I trust ya. I also have those random thoughts of "Hey, let's add something here," in your case, a curved doorway. Usually, halfway through, I'm calling myself idiot for making it harder. Lol. My only question is, what's harder the airstream build or boat? BTW, thanks you and Andy Rawls. I am never getting an airstream, lol.
The wife and I are enjoying the build but I have one question or concern...will you be able to open the window with the crank handle being so close to the wall?
As a former CDL driver and RV owner having a door that close to the bed and that narrow will become annoying and a pain in the ass. You or your wife will be crawling over the other trying to get out while the other is asleep. Do you change it? No, because the wall is needed and you just need to know that it will be something to plan for. Like midnight bathroom breaks, fridge raids, kids nightmares and the like.
When you do so much woodworking that you forget about plumb bobs
Love it. One question: how is the mattress getting passed the wall, presuming that it’s a Queen size bed.
I think it's a Full size bed. I could be wrong. But I want to see him wrestle it thru the doorway as well. lol If he goes with an air mattress, it won't be as much fun to watch.
I'm guessing it will be one of those foam ones that come all rolled up and then expand. Or maybe even a high quality air mattress? They have to be able to lift it easily to reach all the storage cubbies underneath, so a traditional spring mattress seems like it would be too heavy for that. Plus, I'm guessing you want things to be as light as possible so the trailer doesn't get too heavy overall? Idk about that last point though since I've never used a trailer of any sort
@@SLorraineE I think in a previous video he mentioned getting a hinged mattress.
Luv your videos 👍👍🏋️♀️🤺
All this "making it harder" adds value. If you do it right the first time it will be in the camper until it's scrapped 50 years from now
You mean, until it is restored again 50 years from now.
Save the curved cutout piece for your door profile pattern. Just talking from the peanut gallery. LoL
Just one question.... on the curve, Can you cut Halfway down then flip the board over move over a little bit and cut down and repeat. I think that's what I'm trying to say.😅😅😅😅
Could you scribe with a level and make sure it always points up? Or in just one direction. Your scribe is only not working because of adjusting the direction.
Nice work. How cheap is plywood in your corner of the woods? Where I live this amount of plywood for templates will add a significant cost to the build.
You're painting the walls white to match the other walls and ceiling. Hence white screws...
Walls hollow? It would be nice to make them somewhat sound proof
You need to imitate your wife asking is this all you have done? I thought you would be finished by now? More funny Quotes!
You’re fun. 🥃🦋
A wet thinker. Why not standard interior framing? 📏📐
