My wife didn’t want to buy a freeze dryer and I was going to buy one anyway, but we have a rule in our marriage and any major purchases, we have to agree. So I began to pray.
Within a month my wife came to me and she decided that a freeze dryer was a good investment.
I ordered a Harvest Right as soon as she gave me the OK.
I wish now that I would have ordered a Medium instead of a Small, as I’m using our Freeze Dryer almost 24/7.
When our freeze dryer wears out, I’ll replace it with a Medium.

Twice now, my husband and I lost a large upright freezer full of food. Once we were evacuated because of a wildfire and they shut off power to our area, came back and had to take it all to the dump, another time our freezer died and we didn't know about it until it was too late. Also, we live in a remote area and getting to a big box (affordable!) grocery store means a 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive, not always easy in the winter. We just got our Harvest Right and I think it will be worth every penny, Harvest Right offers $200 to $300 off the price if you buy a factory blemished model, ours has just a small scratch on the side of the dryer and it saved us $200.

Sorry you lost that food in those freezers. I am glad you have a freeze dryer now. You are so right, it is worth every penny. Thank you for sharing the scratch and dent info.

We use vacuum sealers for freezing things. We've had good luck with things keeping longer, less freezer burn, and better flavor.

    $2400 freeze dryer...🤯
That's steep for most of us, especially if just 2 person household.
Since I have no plans (or ability) to "bug out" I don't need lightweight/portable provisions. I need to work with mundane and multipurpose stuff. I freeze lots of stuff in summer then can it in winter. Too darn hot here to can in summer. Also, winter canning helps a bit on house heating during rare freeze spell.
Can you comment on run time using an A/C battery pack for your freezer in event of grid disruption? I forget the name but basically they are plugged into 110 AC to stay charged then you can plug in an appliance when grid drops for hours or days due to hurricane etc (TX Gulf Coast here).
    Thanks

Yeah but the thing i see about freeze drying food is a texture issue. The taste is here but it feels like eating a dry sponge. A tasty dry sponge but a dry sponge nonetheless. Now i agree that the 30+ year lifespan is absolutely fantastic. The pros of freeze dry outweighs the cons for sure

    • @cyndiburns7932

It depends on the food you are freeze drying. Many foods are great when you properly rehydrate them (for long enough with enough water) or put them in a stew or soup. And when you freeze dry, you get to store only the foods you and your family like. No waste!

      @@cyndiburns7932 agreed 100%.
Any vegetable freeze dried i would use in soup and yes, it works perfect. i was thinking more about fruits that i wouldn't put in smoothies for example. i do like fresh fruits like Strawberries, but freeze dried, even if taste remain the same, there's to way to get the texture back unfortunately

  • @cyndiburns7932

The freeze dryer is great because we have no room for a freezer, we don't have the money to be paying for the extra electricity and that would be another outlay of cash to purchase it. With the 'investment' in a freeze dryer, the electricity usage is fairly low, and we can buy foods in sale and freeze dry, and use it when we want or need it. Great to fd fresh veggies and fruits in season when you can grow them yourself, or buy them cheaper at a farmer's market or at the grocery store. Then when you hydrate them, your food tastes very fresh in the winter. And you can bring food as meals while traveling. It is easy to rehydrate and heat up in a microwave or on a small stove or open fire.

I’ve been begging my wife to save up for a freeze dryer.
We have the money to do it, but she doesn’t want to.
I’ll probably just buy one, put it on the credit card and when we get the bill, transfer the money from savings into checking and pay the bill.

Thank you. The freeze dryer pays for itself quite quickly with the amount of saved food.
I have no looked for any that are cheaper. It is quite a complicated machine so the better the quality, the more it will cost. I have heard they sell them on Alibaba direct shipped from China but I personally cannot recommend that because of the quality issue that you will face with them.
