Valves are black because its direct injected, I will run the Seafoam spray through the intake once a year or so if daily driven or every 50,000mi... the clogged tube is your EGR tube, it is VERY common to clog, people typically do the EGR delete kit. If you dont want to delete it for emissions testing then you can remove it and let it soak in diesel over night, blow compressed air to free up a lot of that and run pipe cleaners through it then blow it until nothing else comes out the spray brake parts cleaner through then shine a light through one end and see if its visible from the other end. The dirty intake is because of the carbon'd up EGR.

After I cleaned all the carbon out of it it ran good. I sold it and never heard back from the guy so I hope it's still running good for him. Thanks for watching.

That carbon soot in the intake seems to be common on direct injected engines - the fuel is no longer washing the valves from behind... walnut blasting may have been good enough here.

The oil seal in the turbocharger is gone. Plus, you may have a ring problem. I don't know what you did after the fact, but going down this far, I would have at least put new rings, rod bearings, vvt gear and timing chain, oil pump and turbocharger for going back up. Also, with this much carbon in the engine, I would put a new pickup on the oil pump. Once you see the pickup, you will understand, it is a piece of plastic garbage. You can't clean it so throw it away and get a new one. With the timing cover off, the oil pan would drop right down. That said, if you just use the car for a daily driver, reinstall the internal balancer. If you are staying local with the car, you can take the balancer off and get a delete kit along with a windage tray for the oil pan. The engine is filthy. I am not sure if new valves would help you as if you look at the seats on some of the valves, they were carbonized and not seating/sealing. With the condition of the engine, turbos put a lot of pressure on the rings so you need new rings based on what it look like now. All the vacuum lines need to be replaced before reassembly and do not forget about the pcv valve. Easy to replace when the engine is disassembled, can be difficult if you forget after it is assembled.

Thanks for all the great information. I never drove this car. I bought it because I thought it just needed the turbo, after replacing that I was still getting a misfire. After cleaning all the carbon out of it and replacing the valves it ran great so I sold it. I never heard back from the guy and when I drive by his house I see he's still using the car. Thanks for watching

Ya those EGR pipes are notorious for carbon buildup…I think that’s y a lot of ppl delete kit them…I just did a head gasket in my speed6 dame 2.3MZR and my EGR tube was just as closed

So... how do you get the exhaust manifold and alternators off?

Great videos - did you have to remove the power steering pump to get to that hidden intake bolt? Just about to remove mine...

If I remember right I removed it but I left the lines hooked up so nothing had to be drained.

Are the valve lifters hydraulic ones or do you need the adjust them?

It ran really good after cleaning all the carbon out and replacing the valves. Probably didn't need to replace the valves but they were only $60. It sold right away and I never heard back from the guy so I'm assuming all is well.

What symptoms was the car showing before you even started working on it? Did it have blow by, oil drips etc... I'm looking to fix a CX7 for my daughter... so just trying to get any clues at this point!

When I first bought this car it wouldn't go over 35 miles an hour. The turbo burned so much oil if you close the hood and turned on the heat you get oil smoke inside the car. But it was the misfires that took a long time to track down.

@@michiganmudmechanic Hi - I have the same misfire issue in one cylinder (4th)! Did you manage to find the reason what caused those missfires - what was wrong in motor causing the misfires?? I appreciate, if you could answer this, please!

It really all comes down to maintenance, it’s basically like the 6.0 powerstroke of Mazda, leave them stock with maintenance and they last, throw power at it and it’ll go through gaskets quicker than a 6.0. All you have to do is stay on top of issues and it’ll run like a dream. Have had mind since 2010 got 155k on her, only had to do turbo, intercooler, radiator, and gaskets a single time.
