      sddfagfdsfg There is an upper limit to the security needed too. As soon as the tool needed to open/cut a lock is expensive enough that it can be sold for a hit of drugs, it will be. If a thief gets their hands on a good tool, they might steal a couple of bikes, but the tool will be off the streets before long.

    • @AlbertLebel

    • @rainerminusunfug
      @rainerminusunfug 4 роки тому

      Is there a general way to identify the tensioning disc? Or do you have to brute force and handle every disc as potential tensioning disc until you find the right one?

    • @AlbertLebel
      @AlbertLebel 4 роки тому +2

      @@rainerminusunfug My two cents- What I do is simply try front first, if nothing is trying to set I try rear, usually one of them will get you all set or to the point when you can find the zero cut and counter rotate front or or rear disc.

    • @rainerminusunfug
      @rainerminusunfug 4 роки тому +2

      Thx for the reply. So I guess if you are not tensioning the right disc (and thus the core), there is not enough pressure from the sidebar on the other discs, so no disc would _noticeable_ fall into it's gate? And the tensioning disc is always a zero cut because the peg has to make it to the far right and bind the core?
      Haven't picket this lock type yet. So far, I'm just admiring and trying to understand them properly. :)

    • @MikkoRantalainen
      @MikkoRantalainen 3 роки тому +4

      @@rainerminusunfug You just start tensioning from the first disc and feel the gates in other discs. When you find a gate with zero cut, that's the disc you tension to set the first disc. If you have a better made lock with actual false gates, then you need to start guessing. However, often the false gates are narrower and you can feel the difference without testing any other gates.

      Those cheap locks with soft metals are really easy to manufacture and you could add false gates with zero additional cost which makes me wonder why the cheapest locks are having no false gates. The locks that Abloy makes have higher quality meaning the whole lock body is hardened steel and at least the first disc is also hardened steel and usually lacks the nibble to allow it fully rotate creating a drilling shield, too. Those locks tension from the last disc instead.

    For those griping about how long it has taken for Sparrows to release this one very specialized tool, for a rather small consumer group.
    Sure, there are many of us anxiously awaiting the chance to get one of these picks. Sure, it could've been a faster process if Sparrows didn't manufacture ANY OTHER PRODUCTS! But unfortunately, the equipment & facilities aren't just sitting there waiting to make the components for & assemble this one specific item. Other (& often more profitable) products are being made/assembled every day on those machines & in those facilities & it takes time to get all the necessary supplies for a production run on this type of item. Most consumers won't ever see how much is actually involved in getting all the machine tooling, correct adjustments, material sourcing, & overall logistics required for producing a product beyond the PROTOTYPE phase. I won't even get in to the vast amounts of time, resources, & man hours involved just in quality assurance aspects of a product before it reaches the consumer. Ultimately, the longer it takes to get all the important details right & establish a cost effective production process, the better the product will be, at a reasonable price point for consumers.

      While i get your point about the most people have no idea part, i’m just gonna have to come out and say it: I’m massively disappointed in what was supposed to be a big reveal. I was so excited when i first saw bb n lpl’s version, what a beauty! But as someone who has produced comparable products, i think sparrows really sold out. And i feel bad for bb and lpl because of it. They asked for if to be affordable. But what it came out to be is cheap...
      The sparrows one is literally the same as the fucking 57cent, well known china one, except it has the depth lines, which probably cost as much to produce as taking them out of the chuck...
      I mean just look at the difference of their prototype to the final version...quod erat demonstrandum......
      And i’m saying this as someone who has owned that china pick as well as a scandinavian disc detainer pick made by a machinist for a few hundred euros.
      I don’t rly want to involve bb, since he had only the best interest, but even he seems to have noticed the lack in quality, with him talking about how careful to be. Any pick needs to be handled with care but quite frankly this video seems to be preventing a shitstorm due to fragility, issues with which the stainless and even brass version i bet didnt’t have to deal with.
      I honestly was so ready to love this pick, but in my eyes its the same as the previous cheapo version, just in a nicer packaging.
      A pot metal pick for pot metal locks...
      Anyway, much love, and keep up the good work!

      The original Abloy (patent in 1919) has key cuts only at one edge and the key shaft is a semi circle. The key can only be removed when it is turned fully back. Typically furthest (i.e deepest in the lock) cut is full 90 degrees and serves the purpose of pulling the door open from the key. Handy, if your other hand is occupied carrying your groceries or whatever. This of course is a desired feature if the door open outwards, as it does in many countries.

    Thank you Bosnianbill for the detailed explanation of how disc detainer work! LPL specifically mentioned about novices (me) possibly breaking the pick easily but your video will definitely help to prevent that from happening. Hope Sparrows will have the pick back in stock soon.

    I think the different radius in the body to the side bar is not for dirt, etc. but to provide that camming action to push the sidebar in. W/o, you'd need springs, gravity... Great video BB! Big fan of you and LPL...

    Thanks Bill for a great explanation.
    In South East Asia, where I've been for 10+yrs about 99% of the Medium to Large locks are all Dics Detainers, the only on Pin Tumblers are small locks and usually only 3 or maybe 4 pins.

    Love your teaching and showing style…..if you ever make more videos, I’ll happily watch those. When I am working on a technique or a build, I watch your vids more than once and look for other ones you may have made on the subject. You may find that your can create at a slower pace for new videos relying on your existing library to continue to work for you….”If” you ever wanted to come back. If not, best of luck with whatever you do.

    Very nice explanation. I have learned so much from you and LPL the last couple years I been able to not only make tools but get pretty good at picking these locks. I found that using silver solder is excellent. I am still amazed at the strength of that stuff. Thank you Bill

  • @bikkies
    @bikkies 2 роки тому

    Excellent explanation as always, which helps to demystify this mechanism. It surprises me how sturdy these locks can be when the discs are so thin and apparently fragile. But of course they are being rotated laterally which would have far greater structural strength, and the actual shackle mechanism is handled by more substantial and robust technology. Some great engineering thought went into these.

    I would love to see Sparrows make a cutaway disc detainer training lock. Until then, I can safely rely on BosnianBill to explain how it works.

    • @MikkoRantalainen
      @MikkoRantalainen 3 роки тому +1

      You could just get a cheap disc detainer lock with detachable core and drill a big hole through the lock after removing the core. There's all the cutaway you need to see the moving parts. As long as the hole diameter is less than the length of sidebar and you drill in the middle of the core, the lock works just fine because sidebar can slide over the hole.
