Hello again.. The most important observation by Galileo that overturned the geocentric model was Venus going through all phases from crescent through full circle. This contradicted the Ptolemaic theory which predicted that Venus should never have more than a crescent phase since it always would be between the Earth and Sun. The moons of Jupiter were merely icing on the cake. Also, Darwin was not an atheist. He was a Christian who discovered something that conflicted with one particular Christian doctrine. He thought there was a god who created the universe and Earth.
Yes the question of Darwin's religious outlook remains a matter of speculation and controversy. It seems pretty safe to say that the overall influence of Darwin on subsequent history generally did more for the cause of atheism in the world than any form of theism, including Christianity.
Bruce Gore happy holidays! That's very different from saying that Darwin was atheist. He had no metaphysical motivation attached to natural selection. Anyway, the Venus observations are what enabled Galileo to test and disprove the model of Ptolemy, and btw Copernicus was not too satisfied with his own model because he knew it didnt explain everything. He only thought the Ptolemaic idea was ugly. Copernican model had to be modified by Kepler before it fit the data.
