I would say volley fire took the pikes off the field. The bayonet filled the gap left by the absence of the pike against Calvary charges against emplaced infantry, in my opinion.
Glad to see you're back dude. As for the whole "plug bayonet replacing the pike" scenario, I'd say no. If anything, I'd say the plug bayonet is more of a companion weapon to the pike, rather than an absolute replacement, simply due to the fact that a 4-7ft "pointy stick" can't be used the same way as a 17-20ft pike. Although, that could be due to the opinion of "pointy stick good, long pointy stick better".
The plug bayonet was designed to make the pike obsolete. It was never intended to be a companion weapon !!! It was a natural progression in weapon development.

*Attach plug bayonet*
*Attach socket bayonet *
I call it "The Bi-Onet"
The most beneficial advantage was that giving the pikemen a musket you doubled the number of musketeers and didnt lose the effec tiveness of the pike.

Pikes in the civil war?? That sounds terrifying!
It totally is! 😁 I actually have an old video on it on my channel somewhere. I'd like to expand on it as I've done a ton of research on it.
