  • Day 1 of my quest to find as many car collections in New Zealand as possible from a single cool car to huge private hoards , I’ll be taking in some museums along the way and anything of interest along the way.
Peters daughter gave me a shout and told me about his huge collection of British and Japanese cars ranging from old wrecks to some beautiful Cars he has restored himself to an amazingly high standard.
There aren’t many people that can do everything from bodywork, painting, full engine rebuilding and fantastic interior restoration, Peter can do it all and really well
He’s self taught and I really admire his determination to make a car look as good as it possibly can and all done by him at his workshop near Hamilton in the North Island 🏝️
Now Peter is well let’s say closer to 100 than 50 and he’s decided to try and pass on some of the cars in the shed many of which are very much worth saving and some are incredibly rare others would be good parts cars so if your genuinely interested find him on Facebook and drop him a message for pricing and a brief description, his profile pic is a black classic Vauxhall

That Mk2 Cortina estate bought back very early memories and is a car virtually extinct in the UK.
My mum's in the same colour was written off on the night of March 31st 1978 whilst parked up, written off by a drunk driver.
Neighbour knocked on the door the following morning and mum thought it was an April fools joke.
I had turned 3 in early February.

In regard to the pastel colours of 1950s cars, I recently heard that it was a matter of using up surplus WW2 paint pigment stocks. I also understand, via a recent issue of Automobile magazine, that the same thing occurred after WW1. During WW2 pink was used on vehicles in the North African desert and on photo reconnaissance aircraft. Light blue was used on the underside of military aircraft such as day fighters. Grey was used on warships and on British fire engines.

New Zealand built Vauxhall's can be distinguished from the English built one's by the number of welds on the seams, it was done to strengthen
the bodies for New Zealand roads, both a neighbor and my father worked at the factory assembling them.

    • @michaelguerin56
      @michaelguerin56 8 місяців тому +4

The last Ford Falcon series assembled in New Zealand had every spot weld done-as opposed to 85%? of the spot welds being done at Broadmeadows. They reportedly handled better than the Aussie built vehicles due to the reduced body flex.

The first car I ever bought was 1960 PA Velox back in the 70s. I painted it black with a cream roof. Also ended up (stupidly) covering the door cards with fake leopard skin material, and the dash with furry blue material. If the car still exists some where, it shouldn't be hard to miss. I liked the PAs as they had the styling of an American car.

One of the great mysteries of car-making is the way the Japanese name their vehicles. The rule seems to be to pinch something unpronounceable from a foreign language and misspell it.
Mitsubishi's Starion is the most famous example. They meant to call it Stallion but ended spelling it the way Japanese pronounce it. By the time this was pointed out, it was too late to make a correction, so the PR department concocted an explanation about stars from the Orion constellation.1

"Starion" came from "Star of Arion"
The stallion story is a myth
"Mitsubishi says "Starion" is a contraction of "Star of Arion" - and refers to both a star and the mythical horse, Arion. The cover of the original Japanese Starion sales brochure, published by Mitsubishi (May 1982) carried the text: "the name STARION - derived from the combination of star and Arion, Hercules' horse in Greek mythology, symbolizes a sense of the universe, and of power and high performance"

I am in my late 70's and live in the UK and this was a very nostalgic trip down memory lane with some of those cars. Back in the mid 60's a colleague purchased a new Vauxhall Victor 101 estate. I always thought they were a nice big family car. The VX490 version was quite rare back then compared to the Cortina GT models. Another colleague had the previous version the Victor FB model VX490 in an almost beige colour and red stripe with beautiful red leather interior. I could go on about the Ford Anglia's, Cortina's etc and the Vauxhall Cresta FB with the extra clocks on the dash he made himself was excellent. Must see the contents of his other shed.

My dad had a Hillman Husky in the 1960s and in 1965 it was the car I learned to drive in and, passed my test at the first try in. Before that he had a Hillman Californian which was a pretty rare car. After the Husky he had a Singer Gazelle. I think my dad was a bit of a Rootes' Group fan.
The Riley Kestral was fairly common in the UK, as was the Wolseley Hornet. Both of them basically just tarted up Mini's. I remember the Grille on the Hornet being an absolute pain when you were working on them, it was like sticking your head into a crocodiles mouth. More than once did I cut my head on those B***** things.
The Vauxhall PA Velox and Cresta series, and the Victor FA series, those two cars took Vauxhall to the brink of bankruptcy. The corrosion problems were so extreme with body panels being replaced under warranty at just 10 months old. I remember after the corrosion became so extreme Vauxhall changed the inner wing panels so they had round holes plugged with big rubber grommets. In the handbook it told the owners to remove the grommets and wash out the cavities with a hosepipe regularly. You literally climbed into the boot with a garden hose and stuck it through the hole to wash out all the collected dirt from the top of those stupid American style fins. I also remember the PA Velox and Cresta with the three piece rear screen, having issues with the corner, triangular window glass breaking due to bodywork flexing. One place I worked there was a Cresta in workshop and the Owner of the garage was stood right next to it when one shattered. He was the only person in anywhere near it so he finally had to accept that it was not people deliberately breaking them. Memories.

Glad that you wrote about the Hillman Husky. I bought one from a farmer, and the top of the left wing had a large piece of tinplate pop-riveted on top. I didn't drive it for very long, but I enjoyed the Husky. In the time that I owned it, the Rear Seats remained flat-down, and there was Hay strewn all in the back area. I never, ever cleaned it. One day, I was driving the Husky up a very steep gradient. As I changed from 1st to 2nd gear, the whole Drivers Seat broke away (rust) from the floor! I couldn't keep a grip on the steering wheel, as I tumbled right back to the rear door! Of course the engine stalled - as I fought my way back. What a laugh it was at that time, because my girlfriend (sitting beside me) saw my 'vanishing act'. Seeing this Husky made me smile. I'm 75 now, and (in the sixties) all cars back then were rot-boxes.

The NSW police had the Starion Turbos for a while. Used to see them quite a bit on the highway between Canberra and Cooma. Car mounted radar units.

Peter is an amazing man. What you see is what you get. A big heart and obviously a huge love of cars. Much knowledge indeed. Just take time out to chat and learn something. Alan you are on to something really good. The future proves the past.

Sad thing is most of them are not worth anywhere near what a Subaru Legacy RS 89-91 is worth , the old jappa stuff has gone bonkers like the mk2 escorts, if that place was full of mk2 escorts bc5 Subarus and early imprezas it’d be worth 5 times as much .
And that’s not boasting it’s just facts these old cars gramps has got are mega cool but sadly mk1 4dr cortina’s just don’t pull big coin

PA Cresta/Velox came (back in 1959) in a 'sweet cream' colour that totally suited it's beautiful shape and uniqueness. Not 2-tone..!
Just all over a gorgeous 'light vanilla custard' colour . .
I owned one in NZ, bought from 'London Calling' of Gt Sth Rd Manurewa, in 1972, with 75,000 miles on the clock, and No Rust..!
What a beauty it was .. like moveable art .. on wheels !
The only 'worn' part needing fixing was the Solex downdraft carb throttle spindle bushing.
Loveliest car i ever had .. from that time since .. to now

really enjoyed this my first car was a 1956 veiox that I paid $300 for in 1976 when I got my first job working in a shearing gang in marlborough--my next car was a holden Kingswood and I have since then owned holdens they have always been very reliable over the years, my car now is a double cab 4/4 ute valued at $13000, I used to groom these types of cars in the 1980;s really enjoyed this job, the modern cars don't carry the flair like the 70/80 ones did.they never caved in like the modern cars do in a crash--they were built to last didn't need a car computer just a new set of points now and then.i really love the cars from our era,

During my 10 years in Nz in the 90's I was lucky enough to see Ron Roycrofts collection and got to sit at the wheel of his Bugatti, I also found a guy in Auckland with a room full of Kawasaki triples that were covered in blankets that had been there for 15 years, then another chap in palmeston north with a Gold 71 H2 still in its box .... Kiwis look after there stuff, there wage's are low and the climate is good..

If my memory serves me correctly, the Wolseley Hornet had the 1300 Cooper S motor in it with slightly smaller exhaust valves to improve low down torque.

I know what you mean, but not quite the same as the peace sign. Where they were built went through some not so peaceful events also, with strikes regularly. I think it was the Cortina that got the name "Dagenham Dustbin" but I always liked them.
