I've only been once. Beautiful place. It was the Feast of St George. The light came beaming down from the windows up in the apse, it was angelic. Lovely music from the choir too, I think it was a Palestrina.
This is a work of extraordinary dignity, and gives a wonderful flavour of the roots of the liturgy, in Europe, and the Near East. James MacMillan understands that we were not asked to discard our beautiful tradition of the solemnity of the Mass,in favour of guitars and tambourines after Vatican ll and that we should in fact sing the mass, and not just sing AT Mass.
A piece EVER so fit to honour the great and holy man who sits in St Peter's throne, and who succeeds St Peter as the head of God's one and only church! Long Live the Pope! What a beautiful video! God Bless!
"Cathedral of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ" is the official name of the Westminster Cathedral, and this video is from the Holy Father's Mass in the Cathedral, on 18 September 2010.

This is a modern masterwork. Are we all to be deprived of new classical music? To those critics are there "too many notes" like the Archbishop told Mozart - thereby stifling creative genius? This piece will be performed by choral societies world wide (who can do it.) Please don't kill classical music.
@therealalimccabe An absurd and malicious comment. This brief, breathtaking work was commissioned from James MacMillan, possibly the finest composer in Britain today. Like Catholics everywhere, MacMillan accepts that this 'frail old man' is the Vicar of Christ and successor to the Apostle Peter, to whom Jesus said: "You are the rock on which I will build my Church." No , there is no irony in this great fanfare. The Pope is the Pope and "Tu es Petrus" acknowledges his unique role in our midst.
This why I like Britons. They do not clap during procession but they tentatively listening "Te us Petrus" sung whilst them making sign of cross when Pope is blessing. Not like in Milan Cathedral, claps were high, noise and not in order at cancel. I wish you watch the clip! you cannot listen the Anthem clearly which is very important during entrance
"Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram Aedificabo Ecclesiam meam, Et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam: Thou art Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against thee." Of COURSE it's fitting liturgy. Can you not hear the demon hordes clashing against the gates, you can see Archangel Michael and the heavenly army in majesty and at the full height of power, and the victory over Hell? My goodness, have some imagination. Spirituality is drama. If it doesn't move you one way or another, you aren't listening. Also consider that those reacting against it are perhaps just as impacted as those reacting positively...
What a high point in the history of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, how tragic that after the heights of Benedict we have now sunk back into the mire.
@scholaglasguensis I know, real Catholic music is hard to come by in CATHOLIC churches these days, which is absolutely ridiculous. James MacMillan is a truly great composer. God Bless!
0:19 - Tu es Petrus 1:04 - Tu es Petrus 1:13 - Et super hanc petram ædificabo ecclesiam meam 2:00 - Et pōrtæ infērī non prævalēbūnt adversūs eām 2:28 - adversūs eām! 3:09 - Et tibi dābo clāves regni cælorūm 3:28 - Et tibi dābo clāves regni cælorūm!
You can never accuse James MacMillan of being bland! The music of a passionate believer, love it or hate it. On a sadder note (no pun intended), I doubt I am the only one who finds the small minded sectarian point scoring I read in some of the comments deeply depressing. Being Catholic myself I cringe with embarrassment at the puerile disrespect directed at the Archbishop of Canterbury from some quarters. Thank God Pope Benedict and the Archbishop showed themselves above that kind of silliness.
MATTHEW 16: v 18, ...tu es Petrus et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversum eam And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. V 19, et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum et quodcumque ligaveris super terram erit ligatum in caelis et quodcumque solveris super terram erit solutum in caelis And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.

The description is wrong, sorry. This is at Westminster Cathedral during the Mass during the Solemnity of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
@kingofprussia33 well actually the See would be London so it wouldn't be Dr. Williams' See. I think he was given a very privileged place in the sanctuary with our Orthodox brethren, considering he was the only one in that row who didn't have valid orders! I think we were more than generous.
+jbmjbm21 In Holland we have a joke: in heaven there is a big curtain. Someone askes Peter: Why is that hanging there...? Ssss, wispers Saint Peter, not so loud. Behind the curtain are the catholics, they don;t know all the others are here also. LOL

It definitely sounds more like a concert piece, rather than a processional. I admire the piece, but it just doesn't seem to fit the 'shuffle down to the altar' requirement.
In response to cgh21: It's effective in that it isefficacious. It stirs up emotions within us which focus our hearts and minds on the solemnity and sacredness of what is about to happen. (Isn't that a pupose of sacred music?) The music played straight after the gospel and during the blessing with the gospels was much the same - slightly ruined though by the pope - he should have blessed with the gospels much, much slower.
@drupes A rich tradition of Monastic education and agriculture ripped to shreds to fill Henry VIII's coffers, and centuries of Church and State coexisting under the successor of Peter thrown right out the window in the name of heresy and the quest for a male heir. Tragic.
Music that embodies the breath of centuries....Tu es Petrus, Holy Father!
That prelude is so epic. So regal.
I remember my time spent working in Westminster and attending Mass at the Cathedral. I miss being there.

Excellent composition for the Holy Father!!!
Alucinante, fuertísimo, intenso, exelente!!! Bendiciones al Santo Padre, la religón católica es lo más, lo unico que vale en este vida!!!
Magnificent. Our time can still make sacred music. And it is awesome.
The Missal of Paul VI deserved something like this.
God bless Pope Benedict: a truly great and noble servant of the Lord.
Great music for a great pope!

The perfect soundtrack for "the last days of pompeii"! For a mass, I'm at least puzzled... :-D
The song depicts the crashing reality of Christ's word's on St. Peter and the immense responsibility placed upon him.
It's not a mass setting it's a piece of processional music !!

It definitely sounds more like a concert piece, rather than a processional. I admire the pice, it just doesn't seem to fit such a stately liturgy.

Liturgy is drama. This is the highest of occasions for a roman church. This is perfect for this.

hillsongs is pitifully poor but this is even worse
Horrible! You would have avoided such a piece. It has nothing to liturgical and sacred. Is it okay for a movie about Nosferatur.
The worst piece of liturgical music I believe I have ever heard! More suited to the Hammer House of Horrors than the celebration of the Mass.
Il brano è completamente fuori contesto e non si lega al testo latino come spiritualità.
