I had no idea they still made jags in 99. They sold a ton of them in the early 90s and they made great kids sleds and starter sleds for sure. Pretty light. Fast enough to have some fun on. You'll get a kick out of it. And yeah, switching from a four wheeler to a snowmobile is definitely an upgrade in the fun department.
Dude that's a great sled, you will find out how reliable that sled is with regular maintenance, care and will last. That Suzuki 440 engine, Cat has been building them for years. I aquired a 91JagDlx440LT(1st Arctic Cat), fixed it up to working order. I added lower gears and smaller chain, reinforced my Chassis for heavy-duty towing. I changed the clutching, and jetting to match my low gear set up. It does 44mph on radar but damn thing has soo much low-end power that I was looking to achieve.
Also your track looks fine and you can probably get more than 4,000 Miles outta it usually depends on the rider how long a track can last from 5,000 to 10,000.
I just bought a 91 440 Jag AFS for $350. After a carb clean, and general clean up, it runs like new. And it looks like new also. Was stored indoors for its whole life which is the most important aspect of snowmobile storage.
You better check the Track drive shaft bearing under the speedo sender housing. Most of the time, when the speedo quits, that means the bearing is gone. You could do significant damage if you keep running it with a bad bearing.
The 440 and the 550s run nearly identical but the 440 is far better on gas. My friend 550EXT gets about 6mpg riding and the 440 gets nearly double that. Plus you can get a decent one for about 700 bucks compared to paying 15 grand for a new sled. The biggest issue I've seen is the stator is failure prone, but other than that they're happy to spend a day riding 40-50mph
You ain't kidding about the value of some of those old fan cooled sleds (I like 340 / 440 cat models) that no one seems to want. F'em, let them pay $10 - $15K for new iron and I'll ride the same trails for 1 months worth of their 6 year payment plan. And I'll be grinning ear to ear the whole way LOL
Appreciate the video. I bought a 97 jag 440. It came with no starter Could you make a quick video of what the starter and sprocket look like? I bought one and it’s like an 1/8 inch off, so I’m trying to figure out what it should look like
I do 44mph on my 91JagDlx440LT geared low for heavy towing but damn thing has soo much low-end pulling power. I did countless 120mi trips this winter logging and checking my traplines they are extremely reliable. My 1st arctic cat and I love it!
That's a 97 or newer chassis. Good design with the better rear skid compared to the 96 or older jags. They ride great and can be had for just a few hundred almost year round. Even the beat ones will typically not disappoint. It's hard to kill a Suzuki fan cooled motor.

I have that same sled and I weigh about 250 and am topping out at like 60 in good conditions. What have you hit for top speed?
