      @ half of the last team was more interested in decoration than repair. Adrian worked like a demon on the structure of the building but Carol just decorated. If you don’t like Louis style decorations, and I don’t, if you don’t have the same tastes as Carole, and I don’t, these people are a better fit for some of us. Which doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate what they did, they worked very hard, just like this better.

    Intelligent and entertaining, a good formula. If you open up the centre of the stable it could be communal dining - with big doors open for Summer and closed for winter. The architecture would lend itself to having fun with eclectic interior styling.

    What came to mind for me was using your pretty stable block as the setting for outdoor theatre. Build your stage the height of the little walls in front, brace scenery against the building or use it as the setting, and the rooms are perfect as dressing rooms.

      @@OhNoAnotherChateau absolutely no worries you guys are doing great. As one person who has seen all the Château videos over the year since the pandemic, have a good kitchen.. I do say that as a pastry Chef married to a chef. Just have a good kitchen.
      Also have a really good laundry room.
      If this helps at all, I am from Nantucket, Massachusetts. An island 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod. I grew up in a house that was built in 1803. It was not a Château, but trust me, there was a lot of creeks and groans.. Our house was also a hotel.. every winter my parents would do repairs and improve improvements and etc..
      As a child who grew up in an old house that was under renovation, my only advice to you is. Be kind to yourself. My parents had such ambitious plans. The reality is that life prevented. They got there eventually. Just be kind to yourself. I think you guys are gonna do great. And I'm really looking forward to seeing your journey.

    Another piece of information I gathered about pigeonniers from the Château de Purnon channel is that the pigeons devastated the tenant farmers' crops, which contributed in part to the French Revolution.

  • @ellenmadsen7308

    I love and am enjoying your videos as you progress on each one. The loft of the stables was Adrian's favourite place. Thank you for showing us the inside of the Dove Cote. I did wonder if their were any birds still using it at all. The court yard the other side of the stable I believe could be cobbled. I know that Carol's mother cleared around the edge of the buildings uncovering cobbles. If it was used as a Poste to supply fresh horses, that back wooden gate that leads into that court yard would add to that idea, and for that whole court yard to be cobbled. The little house across from the stable block may have been where the stable / poste master to live. Sorry I am jumping ahead. Making the left and right side of the stables gites is a great idea. The loft I would suggest you keep it open as an event location. The lower area you could set up as a bar for events with a few tables and chairs. You could then spill out onto the front or back courtyard in summer. Sorry as usual I write a lot. Ronnie in Saskatchewan

    • @OhNoAnotherChateau
      @OhNoAnotherChateau  2 дні тому

      Yes. Adrian was very fond of the stables building and he did a great job with the pigeonnier and the doors facing the Château.
      There are cobblestones around the perimeter of that building but the inner (farm) courtyard was covered with pebble stones or something similar. We have dug a bit and it's quite the mix of materials...
      We have also found an aerial photo from 1948 and we'll be sharing that on a future video about the plans for the grounds.
      Now, about the other buildings across from the stables, you'll have to wait for our next video to drop. 😉

I can’t wait to see the rest. I hope you don’t mind me mentioning, but Chateau De Purnon have many features like yourself (but more degraded than yours is) they have been restoring for around 4 years. One of those beautiful attics was actually purposefully built as a Pool room, with the original pool table still in the building, 😮which is also going to be restored! It may be worth having a look over to their channel to identify, or I’m pretty sure they would be more than happy to help you. Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. I am very, very, very excited by your plans for the coachhouse, especially for the idea that you may restore the door at the rear. This would allow (if you continued to use it as a garage) access via the main part of the property as it is now, as well as through the rear courtyard if you restore the cobblestones under the grass, and fix up the very old gate in the wall.
    The attic/loft of the stables/coachhouse was almost certainly where unmarried stablehands and gardeners lived; the house servants would have lived in the attics of the main house. I believe most of the hay and feed and grain would have been kept in the barn, the building that abuts the rear wall of the property. The last building that you've not yet shown also clearly had living quarters, maybe for married servants.
    The bricks were heated up and placed at the feet of coach travelers. This method of heating was used for hundreds of years. Unlikely they were used in the house, esp by the mid 19th century, it was more common to use bedwarmers (metal pans in which hot coals were placed, and the pans had a long wooden handle). Bedwarmers would be used prior to bedtime. By the 20th century, rubber hot water bottles had come into use.

    • @OhNoAnotherChateau
      @OhNoAnotherChateau  4 дні тому +1

      And we're still using rubber bottles today at Chateau!
      I have since found other 'chauffette' bricks around the house and will do an experiment, placing them in our coldest rooms to see if I can get them a bit warmer. Thanks for your comment. Cheers!

      We'll definitely be keeping the ground floor pretty raw and similar to how it is now. They would work great as atelier spaces without much meddling. Mostly just needs a good clean and some slight repairs.

    Interesting architectural history and features ❤ Saddle room paneling isn't grand for inside the château if that's your intention. Your vision is a little hippy (dating myself) but go for it. 😊

    • @OhNoAnotherChateau
      @OhNoAnotherChateau  4 дні тому +2

      Well, I think that what we have in the saddle room is a cherry paneling or maybe oak, but very worn. However, it's handmade and very tasteful (there's even a piece of it in the 'old' kitchen of the chateau). We would love to do some paneling in the library/office and we think that the saddle room example is a good place to start, albeit maybe going a bit more fancy 😌

      That's what I thought too about the saddles! (I grew up riding horses as a little girl in Oregon but like I said, it's been a minute.) And yes that makes sense that maybe they had separate tacks rooms for different purposes...the more we do research and learn about various parts of the chateau, the more hunger there is to learn more. Our neighbors have been an incredible resource too. There is just so much to discover and it will be keeping us busy for a long time. Thank you for your comment.

    Obviously, the property needs to be useful to the current owner, but once, JUST ONCE I’d really like to see one of these historic stables restored to their former glory as a stable.
    Also, I’d suppose the tackroom was probably used for the harnesses and accoutrement necessary for whichever type of carriage, gig, and/or carts the owners kept and used.

    Thank you for the tour. I love the style you use to explain the building. I never commented on the last video but wondered if there was enough land to have a preservation orchard like they have in England to preserve all the old Apple varieties. Is there French varieties of apple, pear or plum that need preservation or is there an existing preservation orchard you could mirror in case nature takes out the original? It could not only provide national value but help give value to the local community through food and education.

    A friend lived in q renovated carriage house, three boys had their " rooms" in the stable area, each boy had q stall as a bedroom and they shared a living room with the television with desks. Like a suite i really liked the look, plaid carpet everything was done keeping the stalls un situ . Deep greens blues and cranberry colors. My friend had the rest of the lower level bedroom and a mini apartment. The parents had the upstairs the living room was probably the hay loft. With the original arch windows.
    So I hope you keep the stalls as is and work with the historical features that being said large glass windows for a room maybe for entertaining so many ideas.

    I think the stable is not neogothic because the arches are not ogee or lancet like you see it on gothic cathedrals. The first neogothic church in France looks like this de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilika_Notre-Dame_de_Bonsecours. But the medieval style in France was often also very simple and functional, so I think the stable is meant funktional, that's what the 19th century has also done with new type of buildings like train stations, they were often functional.

    • @OhNoAnotherChateau
      @OhNoAnotherChateau  5 днів тому +1

      Very well observed but there are many other gothic features beside the arches. Some homes from that period that are linked to the neogothic will only have an ogee arch over a main entrance, or over a very central and distinct feature on the façade.
      So, as we are talking about stables, I think they opted for a less dramatic option (and more budget friendly as well).
      Also, bear in mind that these are re-lectures of elements from a distant era by that point - Some of them will be simplified, just a nod as we said in the video.
      Cheers from la Ferté.
