  • Short clip of a brief spurt of acceleration at a rally event on closed roads in my old MG Maestro Turbo. Car was fairly stock, but a different turbo, intercooler and exhaust and some carb tweaking courtesy of my friend Gareth took power up to 217.9hp and 239.7 lb.ft of torque at 15 psi. Although it may have been running 17 in this video. I must say , one of the more enjoyable cars i've ever owned.

I had several Montego turbos (my sister had the wonderfully quirky MG 1600 Twin Weber carb engine in her 1.3HLE!) and my last one was D890 OOC, a red Turbo but transplanted with the T16i engine from a 220 Turbo. Dyno'd at 225BHP and was incredibly quick. Loved the way these cars (even the stock Turbo model) accelerated, such a wall of torque. My favourite tease to other drivers was to stick to 50mph in roadworks (other drivers HATE this!) and then when the roadworks end and the road opens up, watch them all flood out to overtake on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th lanes, then floor it, and watch them all fall away behind me! :-) It's the little things you know ;-)

Me and a mate blagged a test drive in a brand new one when we were about 20. I remember a guy fancied his chances in his XR3i, we blew him away 😂

The big lag and then the sudden kick up the backside when the turbo kicks in that's the old days

I miss my 'Stro where you have basically a jet engine up front and you're thrown back into the seat and everyone's mouth is hanging open as you're doing 140mph in a blink of an eye in a Maestro that everyone thinks is an OAP car.

If you wanted the fastest hot hatch in 1988 it was a standout choice between this and the Astra GTE 16v.

Every summer near i see a black MG Maestro Turbo knocking about. It could be just a couple or even the last surviving one in black since only 49 of them were in that colour. Other than having MGF alloys its completely stock and very fast.

The turbo you used work pretty well but there was still a lot of lag wasn't it

Yeah, well more so a high boost threshold but yeah it was still fairly laggy. But if you want to go fast buy a DCT VAG like a TT and map it with bolt ons.

It had no hard limiter(a friend revved it to 8k by accident flat shifting thinking it had a limiter) but it was around 145- 150mph at 6250rpm with that gear box but the original gearing is a bit longer and i think the cam buckets were only rated to 6500 or something.

@@realMaverickBuckley that's great because those are the days when we learnt to drive a car buy by how much it can Rev by not having a rev limiter
