The Conservatives have promised to raise the tax-free pension allowance - dubbed a 'Triple Lock Plus' - if they win the election.
It would apparently make millions of older people better off

No - tbh nothing the tories do would ever make me vote for them. As for the "pension lock" I believe it would be wrong for a pensioner on £13,000 not to be paying tax when someone in paid work earning £13,000 would pay tax. What is needed is for the tax threshold to be raised for everyone. Jemma is correct on this.
Due to fiscal drag the threshold should be 15500 not 12250, the NI cut was a stunt my son gets 25k and saw no benefit his tax went up by +200 you'd need to be earning at least 32k before your in credit
You'd need to be a bit simple or blind to the truth to vote for Tories now!

I am a pensioner and I was left jaw dropped at his speech. There wasn’t a single pensioner in sight. Every person standing there listening to Sunak prattle on about what he was going to do for pensioners, with not a single sentence aimed at what he would do for all those people standing around him. What Sunak is doing is evil he is going to turn the young against pensioners. I hope people see through him. Look back a few years when the Conservatives started a campaign of vilification against the sick and disabled which caused an increase in attacks on them. Pensioners don’t need this stirring up of hatred all we want is to live out our last days in peace and security, we also want to live in a fairer society for all. Work should pay enough to lift people out of poverty and to give them a hope for a better future. I also want Sunak to stop treating the British people like they are idiots.
I really don't think Sunak cares tbh, he's pretty much just throwing out anything his advisers tell him to, I'm not a pensioner yet (49), but he's attacking everyone! The youths, middle class, pensioners, he'll go for the disabled next, people are buying into his rubbish tho that's the scary part! I wish you well .

Sorry but raising the tax-free pension allowance isn't going make anyone better off, it will just maintain the value of the pension as any increase in pension is as a result of increased inflation. Incidently theres no such thing as a 'pension allowance' all thats being proposed is that the currently frozen personal allowance is being unfrozen for pensioners. It's a con.
What in 10 years time how many of us pensioners will still be around
just makes me think 'oh so my pension is up for debate despite me paying 20 years of contributions towards it already'
Problem is the State pension isn't contributory it's paid from current National Insurance contributions the only thing your contributions get you is your eligibility for it. Thats why pensions an issue at the moment as the working population isn't going to be big enough in the future to pay sufficient contributions to pay for the State Pension payouts.

The NI employee contribution is basically a method of disguising the true rate of tax. It is basically a Ponzi scheme leading people to believe they are paying for a deferred benefit when in actual fact the money is spent directly as is normal tax receipts.

Why is the pitifull low state pension unsustainable. It's funny how civil servents 2.6 trillion are sustainable.
How do they think £11.500 is a livable wage in the first place .we didn’t have the pension option that has now been here for maybe the last 12 yrs low income workers simply do not have a private pension . But why do I think that Christian will have a lovely pension and if he is paying a £1000 rent he is either earning a damn good wage or he is getting the government top up .where I live most don’t earn more than 1,300 a month. Please remember 8.5% on £9,500 is still far less than 5% on £30,000 . Christian needs to ask who will look after his older parents for him because he sure want as he claims he will still be working at 80 sadly women generally are the ones who become first mothers then careers freeing in general the men up to uninterrupted financial security . So you know Christian I worked and paid into the system for 51 yrs while I raised a family and cared for both my family and my hubbies

@@benghiskahn3673 many started work at 15 and did 50 years , now if you have enough savings to provide a funeral and a household emergency like a new boiler you are exempt from any of these "all sorts of add ons" the bulk of us will be gone in 15 yrs and our bus passes will stop crippling the economy , just level up the unfair system

Just enough (2.00) to take you over pension credit so you lose out on all the cost of living payments etc.
Not as good as it looks.
Then they tax you if you have a small pension that you paid extra for to protect your old age.

Six months ago every Tory under the sun were say the state pension was unaffordable I heard Mogg say this . All of a sudden they’re the pensioners friend . I would imagine if I was about to retire I’d be very careful who I voted for . Sunak has said they may need to increase pension age to pay for increases. So imagine looking forward to your pension at 67 only to find the age increases to 70 and the loss of £34000 in pension income.
This lot have form Labour never raised the pension age .
It’s a pig in a poke, no pensioners pays tax on state pension at the moment , most pensioners only get the old max pension of £8500 . The REAL issue is the tax thresholds have not increased for years , the Tories steal a lot and give back a little.
the Tories have increased the woman’s pension age from 60 to 66 soon 67 , Mens pension age from 65 to 67 soon. The new pension which few get is very hard to get in full . Note the wording pay no tax on state pension so if your state pension is below the threshold but your company pension takes it over your still pay tax, only the state pension is protected not the private. One persons tax cut is another’s rise .
Basically the Tories have run the country very poorly even business leaders despair and the Tax take is the largest since the war they have spent 14 years fighting amongst themselves with more interest in self enhancement and have no interest in the people.

A nothing policy. At say 3% rise /year it will be 3 years before they are above the allowance. Therefore no state benefit pensioner will benefit from this for 3 years. By then a labour government would have raised the allowance for everyone so all will benefit anyway.

Some people think when you retire you dont pay tax .Well i can tell them you do I'm paying tax and quite a lot.
Double taxed my friend taxed on the wages than taxed again on the pension

Just thought about this if pensions rise by 2.5% so will the threshold so the gap remains the same

I remember being told in the '90s. My mother too who is now 80 talked about how she missed the change. I have been told repeatedly I was wrong so thank you Christian for confirming I wasn't. I don't blame Christian being pissed off knowing he won't get anything like what previous generations got.
