Cambodia passed a law some years back barring any foreigner over 50 from obtaining a marriage license in Cambodia. The ban was lifted in 2018, but you must show you have an income of at least $2,500/month. I complained to my friends about the old men / young women situation (honestly, I only saw 1 or 2 couples in the TTP area like that.) My friend pulled out her phone and started showing me pictures of her 60 year old aunt. (I was 63.) Likes to travel. Speaks French. Another friend wanted me to meet his sister-in-law who was 53. I wasn't looking to date in Cambodia, but it was nice to be asked. :)
You know Patrick , you can drive Cambodian roads that’s considered you are the best driver in the world. To me I only can drive the United state especially San Francisco California . I can’t drive together with motorcycles everywhere no respect the laws bigger is winners.
Same stigma here but im a Khmer American. People keep telling my wife she is so lucky like i am a winning lottery ticket. Turns out, im a fat loser in the states and my wife has more money than me.😂😂

I know what Pat means too, that people usually stereotype Khmer women who dates and marries a barang as gold diggers. Some of that might be true. But don't worry how others see you or think of you. Every Barang I’ve met in Cambodia who truly loves a Khmer woman either has some doubts or is 100% sure that his partner is with him solely for love and not for money. It’s more complex than this. You are looking at it through a male lens. Women rarely love a man the way a man loves a woman. Only women, children, and dogs are loved unconditionally. Women don’t have to be financial providers to be loved. Men do. She wouldn’t have married you much less even gotten a date with her if you if you were a Tuk tuk driver. Not because she doesn’t love you, but because she is not stupid. She does not love you the way you love her. And that’s ok. It doesn’t make her a gold digger. She’s just a normal woman. She is not a man. When you mention money she says “what money?” As if the $4k in monthly expenses you both pay is nothing at all. You think she’d be married to you if you were a tuk tuk driver on $300 month? That’s ten times less than nothing. Sayonara Barang, she’d find her a real man who can provide. I don’t blame her. Nature has put burdens on her that have not been put on man. Society has put burdens on her to care for family members that is not put on males.

You’re right, I love my husband for who he is , for what he can do for me , he is a good husband, why would I marry tuk tuk guy. By the way, some tuk tuk guys make more than 300$/ months and have their own properties and most of them are married 😊

Tuk tuk driver can’t afford a girl like you. Their monthly salary would barely pay for your two Nannie’s for your child. You’re not a Kim Kardashian gold digger. But you are not stupid! And you would have factored this into the equation when you first started dating him. And it is why you “Love him for who he is, for what he can do for you.” Tuk tuk drivers can’t do for you what he does. A Khmer man who has a degree as an accountant on $600 month salary can’t do for you what your husband does. There’s lots of fish in the sea. Choosing a man based on “what he can do for me” does not make you a bad person.

Hwey bro, my first reaction to seeing you and mei, was WOW this bloke is one of the luckiest guy ever. Mei is beautiful, modern with traditional valuies, takes no bullshit has her own grounds. But tbh alot of cambodian women who marries for a VISA are generally taken for granted. I know so many including friends who married girls from the motherland and absolutely take it for granted, they expected a feable women who lets them go out whenevers drugs n alcohol etc and wants to come home to ba clean house with dinner ready etc. Always end in disaster, something wrong with the male human ego when it comes to marriage or any intimate relationship of obsessive ownership or dominance.
Ladies/girls dont fall for older men / middle aged thinking they'd take care of you, they are the shitstains of the western world for a reason, just because the difference in the economical currency makes them feel like they are top shit, back here they're nothing but hobos n street bums.

the knowing English thing, interesting twist, among barang guys if a Khmer girl speaks decent English it's often assumed she learned it working in hostess bars. Wife seemed mystified at your questions....perhaps what you are SO SURE people think is not what people think? Or not what decently brought up or educated people think. It was funny watching you try different ways to get her to say "oh yeah, they all think I marry you for money, Mom and Dad threaten to disown me, etc."
If the man and woman are about the same age. People think it is true love, but when the age gap is a lot, what you're saying is true. Cambodia passed a law prohibits old foreign men over 50 from marrying young Cambodian girls and exploit the young, innocent Cambodian girls. The government just want to make sure the marriage is honest marriage, not to exploit innocent, young Cambodians. Some countries use marriage as way to traffic women. It is good that there is some ban - just making sure it is honest love and marriage.

Not sure if you've lived in the US in the past 20 years when the culture took a very dark turn? But, honestly, I would much much much rather like in Asia and have everyone assume a woman is with me for money - which is a fairly neutral thing - than face what today's America thinks. They act real polite to your face in America, most of the time, but the disgusting face of reality is easy to find behind the façade by going to Reddit. They think "sexual predatory" "p**ophile" etc. I've been told a 40 year old man with a 29 year old is "p**o vibes" and so on. They are massive busybodies in America and everyone there think he/she has the right to dictate every detail of how other people live. It is not 1980s America, it is a very dark place now. Most of my coworkers and bosses are very current with the culture but I realize due to age there are a few things they don't know. My boss is liberal by an year 2000 standards but he loves to tell the story of courting his wife and how many times she rejected him before now, they've been very happily married 15 or 20 years? But the truth is, most people in America are thinking "oh you're a sexual predatory. If she said no even once that is too many times."

In Japan , women control the household expenses and the family purse as well, the men are given an allowance as pocket money for lunch money and an occasional beer with friends .
