Since platform 5 was built to allow Class 717 to terminate from Moorgate via Hertford North. It has helped with the bottleneck on the East Coast Main Line and Thameslink trains mostly serving Stevenage using platforms 4 and 1. And faster trains passing through platforms 3 and 2.
Someone should probably have mentioned to Dr Beeching to not close The Harrogate-Ripon section as it probably would have been an ideal secondary route should the primary section between Kings Cross-York be closed for maintenance in the same way he should have not closed the route between Exeter-Plymouth via Bude and Padstow especially when the only route to Plymouth from Exeter is on some occasions held to ransom by the winter weather through Dawlish. Just a thought.
