Wait, this makes me so sad about Christian 🥺🥺🥺 I'm gonna really really miss her! She always brings such empathy and centers the conversations well!! I always was eager to hear from Christian’s perspective & have deeply appreciated times she would share on her relationship with God, what she's been learning, what honest questions she had that need to be asked. I hope she reads this to know how appreciated her voice has been throughout the years. Things won't be the same without her 😭 It feels a little cold or abrupt to not have more of a proper send off for her if she’s really not gonna be part of the show anymore. She’s been here since the beginning & part of the heart of this show. I can understand how work with friends can be super complicated & above all, the friendship is so much more important. It just feels weird to not have Christian’s voice be present in this announcement, idk. Oh Christian, if you’re reading this, please know I’ll miss you a ton & lots of listeners will miss you on the show!! Oh my heart is so sad 🥺♥️ We love you, Christian!!♥️♥️♥️

Feels like we need an entire episode dedicated to Christian and her impact and segments from former episodes highlighting things she’s shared that have been very meaningful for so many people. Christian spoke from her heart and made things more personal and grounded, which is such a needed voice. She’s shared so many beautiful things over the years, stories and insights that deserve more recognition. Many times she got interrupted when sharing something beautiful such as relationship with God and I wanted to hear more but she would get cut off too short. Her voice was always so important for the conversations happening on this show. Christian shared things dear to her heart so much so that she’d be crying on the show and I’d cry with her. Her open heart made a difference and I think we just need more recognition for her part in bringing this show to life over the years, the voice she brought to the table. Her presence made a difference and brought a good balance to the show. You will be missed, Christian.

I have been meaning to write a @ChristianTaylorVO appreciation post for years now. I hope you get to see this, Christian. I don't know all of the details here, but please know that you have been such an incredible blessing to our household with your insightful questions and heart. You always get credit for asking good questions, because you do, but I want to highlight the many times that you have also shared your personal walk with God and how you've wrestled with trying to live more faithfully. Your hope for the world and for the possibility of holiness rings out in a cynical world. I remain grateful for your honesty, your humility, and the way you listen. Thank you for urging us toward the things of God. May he richly bless you in the seasons to come.

Guys... please don't leave it like this. It was not wise to announce Christian was leaving by VO. I assume there are mitigating circumstances but y'all, there's no way to make this not read as heartless, even callous. I'm assuming the best of you right now but I'm not sure I should, that was such a bad choice. At the very least, I wish you had taken some more time. With her often busy schedule, we wouldn't have necessarily thought anything was wrong for a month or more. And maybe a proper tribute to her contribution could have been crafted by then.
She was your "audience surrogate". I think lots of people are going to let you know that over the coming days. Be careful: you're going to be tempted to simply dismiss audience reactions because we "don't know all the details". And many of us have heard such things from Christian leaders before. I hope you won't give in to that. Because it doesn't matter that we don't know what happened, we all know there will be different perspectives on what happened. It's still on you to communicate with us in a way that shows you understand how much people loved her, how sad people will be she is not around anymore, and that you actually did value her contributions or at least understood how much WE valued her. You did not do that.
Your work is important. Perception is also important. If I were y'all, before doing or saying anything else, I would seek advice from people who care about all of you. Someone will likely echo what hundreds of people are saying in these comments, that the appearance of this is just awful. There has to be something more you can do to honor her, and something that better represents the desire of this podcast to be a model of character and leadership in this media space.
What you do next might care for and console your audience. Or you could clam up, wall up, and feel justified in doing so. Please, choose to care for your audience, even if at this precise moment, you don't know exactly how to do that.

@@christianchin-ups it's not our place to judge what happened between them. Ideally they can and will work out their personal differences. If they want the details to be public, they will make them public.
To clarify, how they announced it is fair game for criticism, and I would agree that it is worthy of criticisms.
Also, when they mentioned talking with people who they disagree with, they meant having informal conversations and being willing to listen. I would have to listen to the previous episode again to know how much they meant for it to be in our daily lives and how much it meant for podcasters to invite guests that they disagree with.
One thing I'm fairly certain that they didn't mean is that people should have long term ongoing professional relationships with people that they have significant disagreements with. They weren't advocating for people on opposing ends of political and/or theological spectrums to be on podcasts together for years regardless of their disagreements.

That announcement about Christian Taylor was…. Weird, vague, and I think unnecessary. You could have just said that she was moving on and the other supportive stuff and it would’ve been fine. Why all the stuff about saving the personal friendship?
Basically, you fired Christian in order to preserve the personal friendship? That’s what I took from that message. It’s weird, doesn’t make a lot of sense, and begs several questions. Plus I feel like it’s a little humiliating to Christian.
I can appreciate that various factors behind the scenes can lead to such a decision. That’s life. But you really shouldn’t get into those reasons publicly unless you’re prepared to say exactly what happened (which you usually should not do, because it’s only one side of the story and it isn’t fair to the other person).

That said, I also appreciated the different perspective & background that Christian brought to the show (her upbringing and change of viewpoint over time are similar to my own). Please forgive me if I'm misunderstanding (or misinterpreting, for that matter), but it does feel like the announcement this week was more of the world than of Christ.
What I poorly mean is that, especially over the last few years, this show has been so helpful for me in finding ways to navigate the difficult moments/interactions that now seem to be happening daily around me without reducing or dehumanizing the other person I'm having difficulty with, while also allowing that person the space to still be God's image bearer.
After listening and re-listening to this announcement, i can't shake the feeling that there could still be more bridge-building &/or reconciliation to be done.
Again, if I'm way off base, please forgive me. But then I would also feel more comfortable if there was more transparency or light given to the situation (whatever would be prudent or appropriate to all 3 people) so this doesn't begin to feel like the "evengelical-industrial complex" (whoever coined that was a very wise person 😘).

This was pointed out about the Christian Taylor situation and it's worth repeating. They just got done listening to Katlyn talk about how healthy disagreement is, and then not even a minute later they announce they fired a longtime, loved cohost, implying that it was to maintain the non bussiness friendship. Essentially implying that in order to get along, she needed to be kicked off the podcast that prides itself in dealing with tough topics. Again, so they can't agree on THEIR OWN PODCAST. However give lipservice to how we get along with other voices. They don't want Christian on the podcast to help their relationship, why else unless they don't like her voice?

    • @makejesusgreatagain7220
      @makejesusgreatagain7220 9 місяців тому +2

It's not our place to judge what happened between them.

I get it, and right wing politics has done great harm to many people in this country. On an individual level, some right wing Christians are generous and do good work for charity, food banks, and similar projects. It's not enough to counteract the harm that their preferred policies do though.
That being said, in my opinion it goes too far to say that they're not Christians. I'm sure some of them aren't, but it's not our place to know or to judge their spiritual condition on an individual level. That's between them and God. We're to judge people by their fruit to the extent that we discern whether they're worthy to be learned from and emulated, but judging their salvation goes too far.

Payday loans take advantage of desperate people. That's just one example of the poor being exploited and abused. The economic injustice system perpetuated by the status quo is sinful. That the rich get away with paying less in taxes than someone like me living on a small fixed income is disgraceful. I had to resort to Welfare, food stamps, and HUD subsidies when my former husband abandoned his family, leaving me with five small children to support. Wearing the scarlet letter D ( divorced) was a stigma I wore by the Christian Community, and even more horrifying was the title given me by The President as a " Welfare Queen." The shame and humiliation inflicted upon myself and children sitting in the Welfare waiting room to having to account for every penny spent, the $ 20.00 given to my child in a birthday card from Grandma, then being deducted from next month's allotment was shameful. Then trying to find a home to rent as a single Mom of five kids and having to sell myself metaphorically to a potential landlord for the privilege of having a shabby roof over our heads, was humiliating. " Pull yourself up by your boot straps""is an insult, reinforced by the Christian community, shamefully. The Prosperity Gospel pushed that narrative forward. I worked two jobs, sometime three, and raised five young kids by myself, was never recognized as being successful because we were poor. We relied in Government assistance; that made us irresponsible lazy leeches. That all five kids are hard working, productive adults, doing fairly well in life supports the argument that giving a hand up actually allows for those in need to flourish and succeed in life. No one in their right mind chooses poverty,or resorting to Government assistance to survive. Those social safety nets need to be strengthened and increased. As does a single payer medical policy, including dental, vision, and hearing needs to be implemented, quality child care provision, and rental provision for the low income wage earners. Its called bestowing dignity and respect on one's neighbor. I dare anyone of my critics to walk in my shoes and not come through a difficult life without gaining a great deal of humility and compassion along the way for the plight of struggling people. The Church should be fighting for economic justice in this nation instead of castigating the poor as being somehow morally or socially deficient. I am eager to read this book. I can readily relate on a intimately personal level the arguments made for a rethinking if the issue of poverty and all of its social, moral, and political ramifications. We can and must do better. Thanks for featuring this perspective. It is needed discourse.

It seems like your rebuttals to the blog post tend to forget what the blog post is talking about. It's not about whether or not the topics are of importance or whether you can study them. It's about whether it makes sense for Christians to argue about them. Are they the sort of thing we need to fight about?
For example, of course a biologist would need to study evolution. But what value is there in them arguing with a Creationist? Their job is to observe reality, and make hypotheses, not to debate with people.

The Lord revealed to me sometimes ago as to why there was a cancellation of debt every seven years. Really it came through experiencing debt myself. The cancellation would help to bring back some equity in an economy. Not having a system of absolving debt strengthens the rich and keep those poor in poverty. Our debt system definitely needs revamping.

While each of these topics should be considered and meditated on, none of these should have been used to exclude others.

"#materialism and #morality have an inverse relationship. When one increases the other decreases."
We find that in modern times we have become very materialistic. We want to possess things and buy things. So we get so involved in that kind of thing and then we have to preserve all those things. We don't have time for community work or working for justice. And so we quietly accept injustice because we don't want to disturb our way of life.
The more possession we have, the more we are bound to secure them, and keep it growing, and keep it expanding. So we spend all our energy in that effort instead of trying to improve our lives.

I think we should think deeply about scripture. To whatever extent these topics are to be reflected on, there are other topics that deserve more attention. For example, how can the Church solve homelessness? Poverty? Orphan crisis? Wrongly imprisoned? Death penalty? Prison reform? Treatment of aliens, migrants, and refugees? Militarism? Violence? Drug overdose? Suicide? Etc.
To put it another way, how can we live up to the mission statement of our Master and his Kingdom of God movement from Isa 61:1ff?
And how can we treat and heal the pain and ills of our Body?

The scripture plainly states that God judges those nations that oppress the poor. This nation is a classic example of a nation with a selfish and greedy mindset, that exploits the poor, condemns them, derides them, shames them, while corporations receive Government handouts to boost CEO bonuses and stock holders. This is not what faithful Christianity looks like. The reality is, we are a nation that worships wealth, financial success, power, entitlement. By entitlement, I do not mean social safety nets for the single Moms, the immigrants, the low-income seniors, the disabled. A nation is only as good and moral as it treats the disadvantaged, the needy, the veteran, the service workers, the ones who pick the crops, work in factories, and teach our children in public schools, who clean the offices, sit as receptionists, sales clerks, grocery checkers. All deserve a livable wage and the dignity of being seen as valuable. The woman surviving on a woefully inadequate welfare check does not deserve the contempt she and her children endure. No one wants to live like that. Sometimes it is a necessity. Job training, childcare, housing assistance, medical and dental coverage would ho a long way to help put people back on their feet. That was my own story. The Church heaped shame on me. One day, when my children were young, a man knocked on my HUD subsidized door. When I opened it, he handed me a giant trash bag and said," Here, this is a gift from God." I stared at him while he deposited this enormous bag of detritus swept up from people's garage floors, deposited into this sack, and dumped on our doorstep. I was supposed to be grateful for this rubbish. To protect my children from the shame, I made light if it and we pulled the crap out and cracked jokes about what bad taste people had. That was the general attitude towards me. Five children age 7 to the youngest who was not even weaned yet, abandoned by a faithless husband and father who paid not one dime of court ordered child support, and I was the one vilified for resorting to the humiliating process of welfare recipient, food stamps, and food bank lines where the contempt continued. My car died, and I pulled a plastic sled home from the grocery store with the meager stuff that could be purchased with $ 200.00 worth of food stamps per month to stretch thin for a family of six. The revered President Ronald Reagan, the darling of the Church folks, called women like me " Welfare Queens." As soon as my youngest started school, I found work as an assistant teacher for learning disabled students. I was paid peanuts, but it allowed me to be home when my growing kids were home. Four boys need close supervision. I worked with SPED students for almost 30 years. I was able to retire with a small Pers Pension and smaller Social Security check at 68 years of age. I found a subsidized low income apartment to rent where every penny is scrutinized, my bank statements reviewed regularly to make sure I'm not cheating the system. My rent is almost 45% of my monthly income. The community holds its nose at us living in this complex, with million dollar and above homes surrounding us. Now, the Republican Party is again threatening to gut Social Security and Medicare, many of whom boast if their strong Christian faith. Its obscene. I may be poor financially, but they are poor morally. I so identified with Matthew's Desmond's critique of our nation's bureaucratic morass and unwillingness to honestly and consistently address this sin against many hard working citizens. Beautifully told. I may scrape together enough money to buy his books.
Kaitlin, I am so grateful for your generous contributation to this discussion. It is way overdue. Thanks.

Even if we're just talking about financial benefits, we should have universal healthcare and universal education, including college and trade schools, at least up to a certain level anyway. A healthy and well educated society is a productive society. These investments made into our citizens would pay for themselves in the long run.
Using Medicare for All as an example, even if taxes would need to be raised on the "middle class", the fact that medical care would be included would still save people money on average.
Not to mention how much more efficient the healthcare system would be without health insurance companies existing. They're just there to be a middleman and to deny enough claims to stay profitable.
Private healthcare is inefficient by nature because supply and demand doesn't work for it. Supply and demand breaks down when the demand is inelastic, which means that it doesn't respond to market forces. The "free market" isn't free in the first place, but it definitely doesn't work when the product in question is your life. You can decide to buy a luxury good based on its price, but how much is continuing to live worth?
In some cases, competition can drive down prices, but not with healthcare. What matters more is market share. If you give an entity the power to negotiate on behalf of 330 million people, they can get a good deal on it. For all its conceptual faults, this is something that the government is capable of being great at doing, as long as it's not bribed to keep the private system going that is.
Not to mention, if healthcare and education were free and people had their basic needs met, why would people want to join the military? A few would want to do so out of patriotism, but not enough.
Also, there's still the whole "letting people die just because they're poor" thing. We should not do that.
