There are many skilled guitar players that can't write a song for toffee, but play crappy rapid solos raping the scales, sliding up and down the fret board between each lick because they are so accustomed to scales they have bad habits like that.
@Resilient Jackal not really man. Bottom line is he just plays chords and often slaps the strings with the rhythm. Occasionally he will use basic finger picking techniques, arpeggios or just pluck the last three strings. It's a style that suites him. I've played guitar alot of my life and I would say it has given me a great understanding of what a guitar is meant to do.
Bromar Vids Just because he's not the most technical player ever doesn't make him simply "average". He is creativity is incredible and his songwriting is perfection. I don't know if he has a ever written an objectively bad song.
I mean, even if he doesn't have the best fingers, he definitely has a good ear for it. He's one of those guitarists where you can listen to any album, have the sound and style totally change, be completely different thematically, and still come across as sounding Homme-esque. Even though I know who his guitarist influences are and I can hear him using certain techniques, it always comes across as totally his own sound. I mean, the original guitar moves video completely picks apart his style, like the polka, the scales he uses, the downstroke/upstrokes ... and as soon as you hear it, you're like shit, that's literally his whole thing lol. Been doing it since the start, still doing it now, and for some reason even though it still sounds like Homme, it's always something different. It's weird man. I'd be OK with "limited" over "average", but either way its fine. He'll probably never end up on a best guitarist list. Hell, he isn't _even_ the best guitarist in his own band haha. But he can write one helluva decent memorable riff, and I dunno if its just me, but its super hard to sing whilst playing such janky riffs, so I personally give him props for that.
