3 ways to draw a pistol - competition style

- 3 different ways I draw a pistol for competition shooting.
1st is a standard snatch
Acquiring a full grip on initial contact with the pistol.
2nd is a scoop draw
Sliding threw the initial contact and wrapping around the grip while removing the pistol from the holster.
3rd is a surrender / wrist above shoulders
“Don’t attempt this at home”
If you practice any of these, I’d recommend dry-firing until you’re comfortable before adding any live ammo.

Great video! I'm a USPSA C Class CO shooter and your videos are very informative and inspiring since I shoot a Rival Darkside. Aloha from Hawaii's 2A community 🤙🏾
Thank you very much!
That kind of feedback definitely helps with the motivation to post videos like these.
Well shucks Nils, when I talked to you at Frost proof nationals a few years back, I was a new shooter at the age of 66 and you teased me in a nice way about a stage a blew. I can't find anything here to tease you about. Very, very nice. Thanks,. Bill
Get out of here nils! So good man… the indexing on the draw I’ve never thought about…. This gives me so much to aspire to
When you watch Nats footage, Nils has the best draws out there.
I’m trying.
I was surprised that the scoop draw was faster than the "standard" draw, thank you for putting out these videos it's much appreciated by all of us USPSA types trying to get better😊👍🏾
Always cool stuff coming from you. Keep em videos coming! Thanks for sharing.
Will do.
Super cool video. It was neat to see the difference in times between the snatch and scoop draws.
For me it’s about a tenth of a second difference on average.
So if it’s going to be a longer shoot would you give up the 1/10 to make sure you come out with a better grip?
You inspire me to train hard
👍👍
Always a pleasure to learn from the best! Keep em coming 🙏🏼

Man how light is that spring? You make that over the top reload look so effortless. I've only been a part of the 2a community for 3 years.
This was a 14lb recoil spring.
I'm always afraid that I'm going to throw the gun, when I try to do that scoop draw. I just always slam my hand down on the beavertail, and then draw it out of the holster. I just did my first match of the season, and the first time I did open division. It was malfunction town for me today, sadly. I just use minor power factor, so I tried swapping out the comp for the front sight block, and it worked better after that.
I don't know if I just need to clean it more or what. I want to get into reloading and load my own major power ammo, but people at the match said I probably need to get my barrel reamed for longer overall cartridges.
Totally understand what you mean about the scoop draw. If I didn’t have to keep up with the young kids coming up I probably wouldn’t do it either.
As for your malfunction issues you’re having, I’d need more information to try and diagnose what’s going on.
What type of malfunction
What kind of pistol
What caliber
What ammunition
Which magazines
@@NilsJonasson right on, I wasn't even hoping anyone would reply to my comment lol but I just got a Czechmate, and I was using minor power ammo with the comp. I think I'm just getting used to it still.
Great vid bud. Quick question what range is that?
Rio Salado in Mesa AZ.
Oh nice. I shoot up at Ben Avery. Do you frequent Rio? Also what mods did u do to the rival holster? I’m having an issue with too much retention. I have to have the screw nearly all the way out to have a good draw. Thanks for your time and hope to see u in Wilhoit.
Could you post a video about what modifications did you do on your rival? For example, what recoil spring did you use?
I'll see what I can do.
Do you have a video on which eye to focus on when aiming? I favor my right when shooting with both eyes open (I’m also right handed) is this correct??
I don’t have a video on the subject, however, it sounds like you are right handed and right eye dominant. So rock on🤙🤙
@@NilsJonasson Preciate you Nils 🙌🏽💯💯
That is awesome! Great information... Where is the Black Rival-s
This was actually filmed several months ago, before I got the new steel frame.
@@NilsJonasson Oh I understand... I was really wanting the Chrome Rival-S until I saw your video shooting it I ordered the black one to get into pistol competition this year waiting for it to come in
Can you do a grip and stance video
Yes
But wait I’m appendix! Last year I was doing sub one second draw from appendix but my grip was falling apart during transitions. So I realized I was sacrificing a good grip for a speed draw. Now my draw is slow like 1.4 and I’m really struggling to get it back down to sub 1.2 which is my cold goal with a solid repeatable grip. I need to put in the work and instead I just keep beating myself up and keeping myself in this slump. I’ll get it back I just need to buckle down and focus. To be clear on one thing my grip overall is more solid from the draw now so my transitions and double taps are faster and more accurate. So the trade off was worth it but I still have a goal that I’d like to get to off 1.2, I just need to work at it.
I can’t keep anything controlled under a .90 draw - always a snatch as I dropped my gun a few times in dryfire trying to fast scoop and now I’m afraid of it :(
Ok that’s super cool looking and everything, but can you do that concealed from appendix with targets shooting back at you? #GetYouKilledOnTheStreetz #TrainLikeYouFight #ConditionRedALWAYS #SoBlessed🙏
Besides he didn't have a fishing vest on.
Ya - let’s see him do that with NOD’s wearing a fun fur Pokémon plate carrier and KISS boots
He's a competitive shooter. This is a "competition draw" video. You've been watching too many "Pat McNamara and his lil' buddy CJ Ortiz" videos, man. Your "dumb" is showing. Go play somewhere else.
More educational video and grip technique pls
It’s faster in person!
Lol! Thanks Paul.
I have a new rival s I shoot uspsa and idpa who makes a good holster?
I actually use a slightly modified factory holster that is included with the pistol.
I run my Rival from my Comp-tac PDP holster - fits perfectly
@@stovepipe8966 I will check them out thank you
Me over here with my peasantry 1.20 draw
Nothing wrong with a consistent 1.2
@@NilsJonasson *sniffles* thanks champ
