I've been having trouble making and understanding the analogy between Einstein's relativity and electromagnetism for a long time, especially because magnetism is just a relativistic effect of the electric force and also because the classical force of gravity is similar to the force of Coulomb. Now you made it very clear and easy to understand and thank you very much for that .
This video is not the typical connection between relativity and electromagnetism, for that you need to learn about the electromagnetic tensor. This on the other hand is more of a mathematical way to explain the paradox, but it is not lorentz invariant, and relies on the invention of fictitious forces.
The first 1:20 was basically a summary of why I dislike anything to do with relativity, it relies too much on what some hypothetical person in an impossible situation will see vs someone else, the natural universe doesn't care about the perspective of humans. What if Adam has an electrically neutral rotating double star system with him? Sarah must see Adams clocks and the rotation frequency of the stars slow down, and so Sarah must conclude, there is a repelling force (if mass is constant).
Thank you for an amazing video once again, Eugene! Though as a physics student I must ask, does this "new" gravitational field truly exist, or is it just a mathematical trick to get the equations balance out? I have never heard of this "new gravity" before in my life, and to me it seems kind of artificial.
Neither the traditional nor the new gravitational fields actually exist, as this is really a curvature of space-time. Thinking of it as fields helps give us an intuitive understanding of the effects of gravity in cases where all objects are moving slowly relative to the speed of light and where there are no strong gravitational fields present. In particular, the effects of the "new" gravitational field are a way to approximate the effects of the elements of the stress-energy tensor other than T00. By the way, electric and magnetic fields also don't actually exist, as this is really the exchange of photons between charged particles.
@@EugeneKhutoryansky 1 at a time exchanges of photons can't explain forces. 1 at a time photon exchanges would result in jerky accelerations. Jerky accelerations have not been observed. Wow so this finally answers the question I've had for quite a while now. There indeed is a magnetic analogy to gravity. But how would we detect it? Some told me that speed doesn't affect the original gravitational field otherwise anything could become a black hole simply by travelling fast enough. This video raised many more questions than it answered. Please do a follow-up video, or a number of them.
Many thanks, Eugene! For anyone who'd like a more formal discussion as followup, I suggest this: arxiv.org/ftp/gr-qc/papers/0003/0003011.pdf It assumes at least a late undergrad background in physics, but is helpful because the effects in the video are not often discussed at undergrad level.
A short story why GEM should be approximately True: Maxwells equations can be derived starting only from coulombs law using Special relativity. And since Newton's law is identical in form to Coulomb's, it is inevitable that some sort of gravitomagnetic force with corresponding Maxwell equations must hold approximately.
Nicely explained and illustrated! Although you didn't state it explicitly, this shows that the existence of electric fields, together with the principal of special relativity, *require* the existence of magnetic fields. And you showed that the same is true of gravitation, at least in the non-general-relativistic limit. I don't see it immediately, but I believe this line of reasoning can be adapted to show the "frame-dragging" effect of masses in motion.
@@EugeneKhutoryansky these apparent affects are the result of frame-dragging, not the other way around. this is not even a lorentz invariant model, it is a hack.
Another excellent video. I had long suspected there was an induced gravitational field for moving mass just as there is an induced magnetic field for moving electrical charges. Your explanation was very helpful.
A nicely illustrated thought experiment. I think AE would approve. This helps to see when we move away from the static picture of gravity there must be more stuff going on and just looking at moving with constant velocity introduces stuff analogous to what's seen from a charge moving with constant velocity is important insight. Thanks for the vid and effort to make it.

So 8:17 - 8:30 this new Gravity ( created by moving mass should also bend space-time around it more then Its Real or rest mass ) and what this new Gravity is called ( which is creaded my moving mass) !!?????
Very good video!!! Gravity and EM also share the inverse square law, but you explain it in a much deeper level. The photon forms the movement of charge, could we think of this as one universal process of energy exchange?
At 6:04 Shouldn't the Gravitomagnetic Forc point in the opposite direction(i.e. attractive) coz we will use (-m) v X B to find out the force because to find the analogous magnetic field in gravitation we just use q = -m
Eugene, I have an idea for a visualization of the special theory of relativity that I would like to propose to you. Is there a way for me to send this to you directly first without putting in a public forum? Thank you for all you've done so far, your work is invaluable to many of us.
Albert Einstein said: "Everything is vibration" But if this is true if everything is just a form of energy vibration then there should be a process where new vibrations come into existence and other ceased to exist. Also this process should be able to explain why we all have a future that is always uncertain and interactive relative to our actions with a past that is always unchangeable and only really existing as a memory in the mind of the individual. Such a process has to be a physical continuum that is unfolding at the smallest unit of vibration energy the light quanta of quantum mechanics. Therefore it is unfolding photon oscillation by photon oscillation forming a great dance of energy exchange with new photon oscillations continuously coming in to existence.
Electrostatics and magnetostatics suggest electric and magnetic fields could be separate fields. Why we have to consider them as single EM field. They could be separate entangled fields which move in tandem at right angle.
Wait. Does this mean that two uncharged masses can travel in parallel without getting closer? As long as the new gravitational field balances the old one? I think I'm missing something
In Kaluza-Klein theory, electric charge is just momentum in the fifth, compactified dimension, right? The repulsion of like charges is in line with the gravitomagnetic repulsion of parallel streams of matter, because charge is just matter streaming along the fifth dimension. But how then can electric repulsion overcome gravitational attraction, while the gravitomagnetic repulsion of parallel streams of matter moving in a noncompact direction cannot do that? Is there an intuitive explanation for that?
Oh man this brings new revelation. "New gravity" fields exist just as magnetic fields do? Maybe we are unable to observe its effect as its effect is negligible for some reason.
BTW, everyone quite rightly praises you for these beautiful and informative animations, but I think some credit should also go to Kira Vincent who does the narrations. Her voice has just the right level of authority to make these believable.
I have an idea for a video. Then, you could also explain how electromagnetic interaction is the main source of friction, tension and other seemingly unconservative forces. Mostly all main topics of your chan would be invoolved

Thanks.
you really make some of the best videos on physics...
by far the best video ever
Thanks for the compliment about my videos.
I still agree, in 2024!
Sara's eyes are wet from not blinking through the entire video. And why was Adam posing like an angel? And will these two ever meet?
Great video as always!! Are you going to do some videos about String Theory? Also, you made a few videos about Mathematical topics, are you going to do more videoes about math, like Topology, or Set theory?
I will add those topics to my list of topics for future videos. Thanks.
Thank you very much that would be awesome.
Great video! Keep up with the awesome work!!!
Thanks. More videos are on their way.
Great video as always, Eugene. Great work.
Thanks.
original and best channel in yt.
Thanks for the compliment.
Very interesting topic and great video as always, M. Eugene. Also, bravo for the audio mix. It’s perfect ;)
Thanks. Glad you liked my video.
You are doing a really great job in visualizing difficult problems. Amazing! Keep it up!
Thanks for the compliment. More videos are on their way.
Exceptional insights and incredibly well illustrated.
Thanks for the compliment.
This aspect of gravity has been measured by the satellite "Gravity Probe B." I might do additional videos on this topic. Thanks.
Excellent video. I feel like i wasn't ready for this...
Many thanks, Eugene! For anyone who'd like a more formal discussion as followup, I suggest this:
arxiv.org/ftp/gr-qc/papers/0003/0003011.pdf
It assumes at least a late undergrad background in physics, but is helpful because the effects in the video are not often discussed at undergrad level.
A short story why GEM should be approximately True:
Maxwells equations can be derived starting only from coulombs law using Special relativity.
And since Newton's law is identical in form to Coulomb's, it is inevitable that some sort of gravitomagnetic force with corresponding Maxwell equations must hold approximately.
Not sure I'll ever take this in, but will try again...
Thank you for the video. It helped a lot in clearing a few doubts. Looking forward to the next video.
Thanks.
Thanks for another great video Eugene and Happy New Year!
Thanks and happy New Year to you too.
Thanks for the compliment. And yes, frame dragging is the result of the gravitational effects described in this video.
@@EugeneKhutoryansky these apparent affects are the result of frame-dragging, not the other way around. this is not even a lorentz invariant model, it is a hack.
ЕЕ, спасибо за новую работу!
Another excellent video. I had long suspected there was an induced gravitational field for moving mass just as there is an induced magnetic field for moving electrical charges. Your explanation was very helpful.
Thanks.
Great great great great great!!!!
Thank you so much.
Keep it up.
Thanks. More videos are on their way.
what about mass? Sarah should see the particles have more mass since they are moving
That is covered at the end of the video.
You have a gift! Thank you
Thanks.
been long since your last video.. i really enjoy the animation and the fluent explanation
Thanks for the compliment about my video. I am glad you liked it.
Sir i am waiting eagerly for your videos on laplace transform and z transforms. There are no animated videos on these topics ,it would be a boon for all engineering students. Please choose it as your next topic and help us.
Visualizing the Laplace Transform will be the topic for my next video.
Eugene Khutoryansky :thank you for ur reply ,i love the fact that u really care about ur subscribers.
Thanks for such wonderful videos ...I have watched almost all your videos...
3:28 What if I tried to violate it SR by using a stretched spring? Should there be a magnetic analog to a stretched spring as well?
Awesome! I've had a hard time understanding the connection between Electromagnetism and Relativity when I read Griffith's book about Electrodynamics, before I watched this vidoe. This video gives a great and perfect intuition about that. Thank you so much for the video. I hope I can donate via Patreon😥😥...
Thanks. I am glad you liked my video and I really appreciate your interest in donating on Patreon. Thanks!!!!
This and that are two completely different things.
So 8:17 - 8:30 this new Gravity ( created by moving mass should also bend space-time around it more then Its Real or rest mass ) and what this new Gravity is called ( which is creaded my moving mass) !!?????
X-TREME Diy it’s called “gravitomagnetism”. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitoelectromagnetism
Well... my mind has officially been blown several times over
This amount of beauty in physics is dangerous.
OMG OMG OMG OMG, new video!
More new videos are on their way.
Thank you Proffessor Khutoryansky =)
Very good video!!! Gravity and EM also share the inverse square law, but you explain it in a much deeper level. The photon forms the movement of charge, could we think of this as one universal process of energy exchange?
At 6:04 Shouldn't the Gravitomagnetic Forc point in the opposite direction(i.e. attractive) coz we will use (-m) v X B to find out the force because to find the analogous magnetic field in gravitation we just use q = -m
The video is correct. Details about the equations are available at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitoelectromagnetism#Equations
Fascinating; this all seems to be highly suggestive of an underlying unification of electromagnetism and gravitation . . .
New video after a long time
Огромная благодарность! Keep it going please!
Thanks. More videos are on their way.
One question on 9:47: Traditional Gravity and new gravity are in phase. Is it possible, the phaseshift between the two fields must be 90^?
Your videos are amazing, truly fantastic. Thank you!
Thanks for the compliment. I am glad you like my videos.
Wait. Does this mean that two uncharged masses can travel in parallel without getting closer? As long as the new gravitational field balances the old one? I think I'm missing something
Really need to find the Maxwell like equations with corrections for masses moving at speeds approaching the speed of light.
Thanks so much for such beautiful videos
Thanks for the compliment about my videos.
@@EugeneKhutoryansky yeah and please keep it up ☺️
Absolutely mind blowing thank you
Glad you liked my video. Thanks.
I'll have to watch it a few times.. Great video btw.👍👍
Thanks.
Love your videos... thanks for making me a little smarter. This is why I love youtube. Where shall we go next!
Glad you like my videos. Thanks.
These are simply beautiful tyvm!
Thanks.
Yes, in most cases the gravitational effects discussed in this video are negligible, but they have been measured by the satellite "Gravity Probe B."
wooow, thank you for your videos :) They are wonderful :) Greetings from Sarajevo :)
Thanks. I am glad you like my videos.
Excellent video. Thank you.
Thanks. Glad you liked my video.
Thank you Eugene!!!!
U finnaly made me understand gravity waves!!!
Search on UA-cam : 'Mass displacement field : R-field journal'
BTW, everyone quite rightly praises you for these beautiful and informative animations, but I think some credit should also go to Kira Vincent who does the narrations. Her voice has just the right level of authority to make these believable.
Your video's are brilliant, tks
Thanks for the compliment.
Please make a video on unified field theory
you are awesome love your videos and you too.....from india
I have an idea for a video. It would be about the fundamentals of electromagnetic interaction (QED) incluiding the part when particles produce and absorb photons, so it would also mix up with relativity and QM. Then, you could also explain how electromagnetic interaction is the main source of friction, tension and other seemingly unconservative forces. Mostly all main topics of your chan would be invoolved
you should publish research paper on this....love this video...
