This band started with Dio on vocals. Then Graham joined, then Joe Lynn Turner. They never had a true identity because of the revolving vocalists. That being said, they were great
Cozy Powell on drums. Cozy Powell (born Colin Trevor Flooks; 29 December 1947 - 5 April 1998) was an English rock drummer, who made his name with many major rock bands and artists such as The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Gary Moore, Robert Plant, Brian May, Whitesnake, Emerson, Lake & Powell, and Black Sabbath. Powell had appeared on at least 66 albums, with contributions on many other recordings. Many rock drummers have cited him as a major influence.
Alright, this is from a more radio friendly hard rock era. Rainbow is Deep Purple's original guitarist Ritchie Blackmore solo band which was more heavy earlier on, so I recommend you listen to the whole B-side of the 1976 album "Rising" which consists of 2 epic 8 minute tracks "Stargazer" and "A Light in the Black" with Ronnie James Dio on the vocals. Also: The songs I recommended tell a story in two parts so listening to them both one after another is semi-important
One of the few Rainbow songs written by Russ Ballard (not a member of the band). I think he also wrote I Surrender, another commercial but successful Rainbow song released as a single with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals.
"Street of Dreams" is another great pop song by Rainbow. A lot of people like their earlier stuff better, and it's great, but I've always had a soft spot for that one.
Great song, great reaction. I would love to see your reaction to Stargazer by Rainbow, same band different singer and something a bit longer to get stuck into.
Never heard of Rainbow? Ritchie Blackmores " Other" Band aside from Deep Purple, their original singer was Ronnie james Dio this singer is Grahmn Bonnet who went on to form the Band Alcatraz with Yngwie malemsteen
An ex-boyfriend of mine was great friends with Richie and actually lived near each other in Centerport, Long Island, for quite some time! I believe they even toured together in Europe, at some point. Paul (my ex) and I went to a Halloween party (1985) and Richie was there. We hung out almost the entire night (Richie and I) - Playing foosball, shooting pool and doing shots of Jack Daniels. 🥃 He was dressed as a full-on Pirate... Parrot and all! (This was way before Jack Sparrow/Johnny Depp.) I was dressed as a Chorus Line Girl! 🎩 We all had a ball! It was certainly a night to remember! 💜💫✌🏼🎵 Fun fact: Richie Blackmore does not have a driver's license.
@@jamieflowers1493 Yes. I should have explained that better. They both lived in Centerport for quite some time (maybe their 20's - 30's - 40's). I know Paul Kayen was 29 in 1985.
Always liked this song. It has been done by several bands. Was reading comments, the song that I always relate this band with is The Man On the Silver Mountain. Saw them with Thin Lizzy back in the day, great show. Thin Lizzy was the opener.
Daniel, if it is not too long for you can I suggest that you listen to ‘Stargazer’ and ‘Light in the black’ in one hit as they are a single story in two parts. It is one side of an album so nothing that you have not taken on before. ‘Since you have been gone’ is one of the most commercial songs of their output and IMHO not the best line up. The two tracks above from earlier album ‘ Rainbow Rising’ and the track ‘Kill the king’ from album ‘Long live rock and roll’ show the best phase of the bands music. Rainbow were a supergroup with that ‘best’ line up including Ritchie Blackmore ( Deep Purple), Ronnie James Dio ( who moved on to lead Black Sabbath) and Cozy Powell who was a top tier rock drummer.
Sometimes, and bear with me here, starting to listen to an artist or band one has never heard of before is more accessible to a new listener if they listen to the more "commercial" material first. There's a reason the songs become hits. Sometimes, if people just start with a band's most eclectic or deep cut, it sometimes does the opposite of endearing them to the artist or song. Not saying Daniel falls into this category, since he seems to have a good ear and musical abilities himself, but he deserves to have some fun listening once in a while. He's not a middle aged audiophile running a used vinyl store, he's a bright teenager. Although he might have the soul of said middle aged audiophile. LOL
Rainbow has different eras marked by their different vocalists...other songs to check out: Gates of Babylon, Stargazer, Lady of the Lake, Kill The King, Stone Cold, Can't Let You Go, Jealous Lover
Please listen to Stargazer and A Light in the Black from the Rainbow Rising album. Ronnie James Dio was the vocalist then and both songs are incredible banger masterpieces.🔥🎧🤘🏻
I can only echo what Alan says below, in that this was a new streamlined band with one eye on the charts! The earlier stuff is heavier, and generally considered their best work, although the two big hits featured on 'Down To Earth' are incredibly catchy pop/rock songs!
Another good reaction, I love how you research the band and lyrics. Just wondered - have you ever had anyone suggest "Let the day begin" by the Call? I'm a "senior lady" and always loved that one. Anyway, thanks for talking ng me on some great musical journeys!
Rainbow is such a great group, one of my favorites. Especially the Ronnie James Dio Era. Check out "Stargazer", "Man on the Silver Mountain", "Catch the Rainbow" and so many more. Graham Bonnet had a couple good songs with Rainbow, this on and "All Night Long" where his best. The next era with Joe Lynn Turner had "Stone Cold" and "Street of Dreams" that are very good. Then Doogie White took over and his best is "Ariel" and "Hunting Humans" .... also did a great live version of Dio era "Temple of the King". Such a great group for many years.
As someone has noted Ronnie James Dio was the first lead singer in the band. I'd like to see your reaction to one of those songs (perhaps Man On The Silver Mountain) vs what you've just heard from Graham Bonnet.
Bonnet got a lot of stick for his short hair, of all things! He had a fine rock voice, but Dio was the archetypal metal screamer, who just had more range and charisma than Bonnet could muster!
Love this song! First time I heard it done was by a band called Head East! I have a request! Could you do a reaction by a band called Liliac. They are a band of siblings. Do have some amazing covers and originals. Perhaps you could check their cover of Dio song The Last In Line! Have a great day
Rainbow went through a few different iterations with different lead vocalists. This lead vocalist was Graham Bonnet, and the album was "Down to Earth." Probably Rainbow's best-known material was their earliest stuff with Ronnie James Dio as the vocalist. Ironically, perhaps, because later material, like this song, was considered "more commercial" than the Dio years. The first three albums featured Dio on Vocals, the next album and a half had Graham Bonnet, then Joe Lynn Turner came after. You will probably get a flood of requests for the song "Stargazer" which was from Rainbow's second album ("Rising"), and is classic Ronnie James Dio. Throughout Rainbow's discography, there was often one song on each album that was a longer, more intense song and truly worth reacting to. Some that I'm familiar with include Man on the Silver Mountain (Richie Blackmore's Rainbow, with Ronnie James Dio) Stargazer (Rising, with Ronnie James Dio) Gates of Babylon (Long Live Rock and Roll, with Ronnie James Dio) Eyes of the World (Down to Earth, with Graham Bonnet) Tearing Out My Heart (Straight Between the Eyes, with Joe Lynn Turner)
If you like this, you may also like an earlier version of this by South African female band called ‘Clout’. I prefer their guitar solo. Russ Ballard, lead singer and guitarist of Argent wrote this song, among others that other artists had hits with.
As Andy said, it was written by Russ Ballard. Theres a few videos of him singing it on UA-cam. Russ also wrote another Rainbow song called I Surrender. He's also written hits for Ace Frehley, Kiss, Elkie Brooks Hot Chocolate, Roger Daltrey and many others.
There are about a dozen players in the modern era that deserve their reputation as prolific "riff" creators/writers., Richie Blackmore is among them, in my opinion. Gram Bonnet really belts out some killer vocals on this album.
I grew up with the Head East version, but this and the Yngwie version gives me the thrills that Head East's version doesn't do for me as an adult. If that makes sense. Don't get me wrong, I love the original, but you know how sometimes something you remember from childhood doesn't exactly match your memory when you hear it or see it again? I had that issue with the earlier version. lol
In which Ritchie Blackmore ditched Dio and his dungeons and dragons, and came up with his most enduring radio hit. It still sounds great to my ears. Cozy Powell hated the new direction so much he quit the band, and Graham Bonnet was around for only one album, but it was good while it lasted. Some people understandably get fixated on Dio's contribution, he was never better than when he was with Rainbow, but there are some good songs from the Joe Lynn Turner era of the band, which was their most commercially successful period.
Definitely, as many have suggested.. try some earlier Rainbow (Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow), Rainbow "Live On Stage" - the Man on the Silver Mountain, medley. Also Stargazer, from the album, "Rainbow-Rising" as per lots of requests. Sub'd btw.. finally lol.
If this is your first time hearing Rainbow, wait until you hear Stargazer with original vocalist Ronnie James Dio. This is Graham Bonnett who also was in Alcatrazz with Yngwie Malmsteen on guitar.
There is this weird connection between Rainbow, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Whitesnake. Interchangeable members, including famous singers, drummers, and a lone keyboardist. This back story has entertained me more than most of the music they've all created in the last 30 years. Try out "Street of Dreams" from '83. Thanks for the non-Dio Rainbow, lol, it doesn't happen very often.
Wonder when the video is from. Looks like Cozy Powell on drums, which makes me happy to see. He unfortunately crashed and died with his car in the end of the 90s. The best lineup of Rainbow imho was the one from Rising (and which I was lucky to see live in Gothenburg 1977 or 1978) with Dio on vocals, Powell on Drums, Tony Carey keyboards and Jim Bain on bass. They had their huge Rainbow over the stage at that concert, which was one of my great concert memories. Unfortunately, when I saw the band again a couple of years later in Stockholm it was shit. Rising is their best album, and especially side two (with the long Stargazer and Light in Black) is epic. Otherwise there are some cool tracks on their live album On Stage (Catch the Rainbow, Mistreated, Sixteenth Century Greensleeves and Still I'm Sad). On Stage is like Deep Purples Made in Japan very much long tracks, 1 or 2 tracks per side of the original 2-LP release. And while on the subject, yeah, do some tracks from Made in Japan as well, but you can skip Smoke on the Water and The Mule from there. I especially recommend Sweet Child in Time (which I saw a professional opera singer react too, even though it was not the Made in Japan version, but live and very similar to the one of Made in Japan, very fun, as she was really impressed both with the singing and the performance of the group as a whole), Lazy and Space Truckin' from that live album, which probably is the best live ever released.
I responded to someone above about them being the originator (although I think there was a simultaneous version by the writer of the song Russ Ballard, I never heard him back then.).
Lots of people have covered it including Yngwie Malmsteen and the great Brian May. Pop music doesn't always mean bad music. But try another version maybe you'll like one of those better. This is just my favorite version.
'All Night Long', and, 'I Surrender', are similar songs from this period in Rainbow's history.
Let's rock! I'll get my lighter going! Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was in Rainbow.
Um… yeah! They are HIS bands. Literally!
This band started with Dio on vocals. Then Graham joined, then Joe Lynn Turner. They never had a true identity because of the revolving vocalists. That being said, they were great

Stargazer for sure, one day. Great job. Enjoyed
"Street of Dreams" is another great pop song by Rainbow.

Good call, also from the same timeframe and singer, Stone Cold.
Yay! You picked my song! Thanks, it's a great one. Many covers of it too.
Rainbow's version is a cover of Russ Ballards "Since You Been Gone".
The lead singer went on to a short stint in the band Alcatraz, which featured a young Yngwie Malmsteen.
One of the best songs that they made
Great song, great reaction. I would love to see your reaction to Stargazer by Rainbow, same band different singer and something a bit longer to get stuck into.

This is by far my LEAST favorite of Rainbow's songs. The vocals get shrill enough to clean stubborn stains off of the dinner dishes.
