Awesome! One of my relatives Hugh Orr was one and held some of the rarest glasses and eyewear in the world, making the biggest auction for optometrists in 2003 :)
I’m a current Pre-PA/Med student and i’m thinking about switching over to Pre-Optometry! There’s so many fields I’m interested in, but picking is the hard part!
Currently getting my bachelor's in biochemistry but i dont know what field i want to go into now, pharmacy, optometry or dentistry, im currently working as a pharmacy technician but looking at the pharmacist work seem kinda boring, but watching this makes me want to become a optometrist
I am so curious to what you ended up doing. I am in the exact same boat! getting a BS in biochem and working as a pharmtech. I thought I'd love pharmacy but to be honest its as you said too boring
I did my undergrad in Physiology and Zoology. I considered all options: optometry, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, audiology, physical therapy, chiropractic, etc and I decided on.......veterinary medicine.
Same problem I'm having...Been working as a Pharm tech for a couple years and I enjoy the job, but thinking how much will change in the next 7-8 years and considering some fellow coworker pharmacists (newly licensed) have said if they could go back they would not choose pharmacy, instead PA seems to be a common response. But I'm stuck between going into pharmacy still or deciding on optometry, I love pharmacology and studying the mechanism of action and interactions between medications and making sure patients are following the best possible medical regimen to keep people as healthy as possible..I just think so much of pharmacy work will be automated away in the next 10 years, and being an optometrist seems interesting, but I love research...I wish I had someone to help me with guidance. I know I could be a pharmacist part-time and work in a research institute because I want to be on the frontier of research to help as many people as possible. What to do, what to do....
Same I’m stuck in the same situation. I wanted to be a pharmacist but the job market is looking really rough and I don’t think I love pharmacy that much to get into that much debt when the pay is already decreasing.
It's better to clean your equipment while your patient is sitting and waiting. So they can see that your are really cleaning your equipment and take comfort.
I’m graduating this year and applied to college for nursing. I was thinking of studying for optometry but i feel I’m not as smart. For my college career I had a 3.5 gpa. Am I just overthinking it lol
Who says smart has anything to do with it? I graduated high school with a 2.1 GPA and proceeded to graduate nursing school highest honors, none which was related to how “smart” I was. I worked my ass off to be a competitive student, not by being born a genius. Nursing school is just as hard, if not more difficult to get in to than optometry school. Getting in isn’t about your intelligence, it’s about your determination.
I'm 26 years old and I've been looking at all kinds of career paths. So far all I have is an Associate's degree in General Studies. My grades in high school weren't magnificent, but college not too bad. My financial situation isn't great but not impossible. Should get a bachelors in biology or Health Sciences, and go for it? The school I'm most interested in is Ferris State University in Michigan. :)
Hi! Kind of a silly question here, but what time does the average OD student go to sleep at night vs what time you wake up in the morning? Because as it is, between finishing up my Bachelors with high grades and working part time, I hardly get any sleep as it is, and it's hard to imagine another 4+ years of being overworked and sleep deprived. (I'm sure its worth it of course, I'd just like to have an idea of what I'm getting into! Haha)
It depends on your schedule and how you study. I would go to bed around 11 pm on uneventful nights but nights before an exam I would stay up as long as I needed. Good time management and planning ahead helps!
GREAT VIDEO! Im thinking of going into optometry myself but sometimes get grossed out by certain things (i.e. if there was a large item stuck in the eye, completely bloodshot eyes, eye falling out of the socket, etc). What would be your advice for someone like me?? (i.e. you will get used to it over time, maybe optometry is not for you, you barely ever see scenarios like that, etc) ANY ADVICE IS APPRECIATED!
Yes! I utilized notecards and would rewrite all of my lecture notes. It is really helpful to utilize as many methods of studying as possible (group study, videos, practice quizzes, drawing it out, etc.)
I have a question. Im a biochemistry major currently in my 2nd semester of second year. I really want to get into dental however my GPA from first year is really bad (All C+ and a D). My councillor said I'm only done 1/5th of my degree right now (took less courses first year), and I have showed improvement in second year physics -A,biochem-A, and two other courses I got a B and C. I just want to ask if I still have a chance at dental..I'm currently trying to be hopeful and am looking for volunteering opportunities right now. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks !
rsp 123 of course you still have a chance, just stay on the trend you started and prove to dental schools that you can succeed in their courses. If anything you may have to do a post bac or get a masters degree but if you can get restore your gpa to a competitive range you should be alright.
Mam can u pls explain the procedures for becoming an optometrist there for indians..... Like registration, then is OD mandatory, does bsc opt 4 year degree valid there, experience essential like that.... Pls
There is no such thing as BS Optometry in US because their university requires 2 years of college or associate of science in whatever health profession then after finishing that, that's the only time they can enroll in the Doctor of Optometry program. You will need to repeat OD school there if you had a Bsc Optometry but it's called "Advance Standing OD program" which means lesser years of study for international optometrist.
Under Obama Care,Optometry has been torpedoed. OD degree requires 8 years of college and much debt to pay for that education. Do the accounting...The average debt after all that education is over $400,000 at age 26 years. Obama Care doesn't pay for optometry care, so patients go to cut rate chain opticals...You missed out of 4 years of income after your bachelor's degree. Getting a 3.5 GPA in undergraduate science Bachelors was hard and optometry school was difficult and expensive. I graduated optometry school in 1981. I made $ 120,000 back then. Optometrists still make $ 120,000 in 2018. Think twice about the commitment/ sacrifice you are going to make.... Paul Michel, OD, class of 1981 Southern California College of Optometry

Great vlog! I got to see how my day might’ve been like if I went to optometry school instead of med school 🙂.

Antonio, How hard is it to get into Optometry College? What's the average accepting rate?
This is one of my career choices!
It's better to clean your equipment while your patient is sitting and waiting. So they can see that your are really cleaning your equipment and take comfort.
It is best to do both. Clean before and while they are in the room! You can never be too clean (:

Yes! I utilized notecards and would rewrite all of my lecture notes. It is really helpful to utilize as many methods of studying as possible (group study, videos, practice quizzes, drawing it out, etc.)
Would they teach u how to use the equipments?
Yes, generally you learn it during clinical rotations
Haha those were good times, being in Optometry school. Remember, it's all about the journey

That's you checking for either Motion Parallax or Physiological Diolopia, lol.
What are your specialties in?
How much does optometrist make on average? Also, do they earn more in private practice?
The range varies based on location, work setting, and position. There is a lot of earning potential in private practice.
in my area, it's $200,000
