- "You have to begin to weigh formative versus summative assessment."
Rick Wormeli, author of Fair Isn't Always Equal and Differentiation, explains the difference between the two and how formative assessment helps you offer better feedback to your students.
This clip is part of Rick's Fair Isn't Always Equal mini-site, available at www.stenhouse.com/fiae .
I use two metaphors for formative assessment: athletics and healthcare. If doctors and coaches only gave us one chance with zero feedback to improve our situation, where would we be? Instead, they observe and discuss with the patient/athlete. Coaches give feedback daily and multiple times daily. When they see something is off, they connect with the athlete to discuss and show them the right way or a different way that might help. Doctors run tests to gain data to help them decide what route to take. I think if teachers had these roles in mind as they moved through their day, they might have better results overall.
Formative assessment is important in any lesson. It should be what tells us who is/ is not getting a given concept. I think, technically any assessment really is 'formative' as teachers and learners as well, are never really 'finished'. There is always room to grow or change your understanding.
After using this practice over the last several years, is this completely negates the process and the process in many cases, is much more important than the outcome.
How long did you teach, where did you teach and how long has it been since you have taught?
Sir this is a Wendy's...
We just used to call them tests. Maybe, sometimes, we called them quizzes.
How about assessments over Zoom?
Thank you!
what is the copyright/share stipulation on this particular video?
Same as any video or sound track. Share it and if needed. Supply original source. As long as you don’t say it’s your own work. Happy days.

How about making sure that teachers have enough prep time to do effective planning in the first place?
