    I think they should make some cell phones in America by middle class Americans with union wages. And upscale the price tag to go with it. If you want to Buy American, you can spend 2000 bucks on a phone that is identical to that 700 dollar Chinese iPhone.

    • @scwirpeo
      @scwirpeo 6 років тому +5

      Matt T Unions don't get you crap. My union got me 7$ an hour over minimum wage in China. They then take 1$ roughly off the top. All in a country with living costs that are massively higher than China has.
      It's not really the Unions that ruin the prices on these things. It's the combo of wages, government regulation, business investment, and access to material.
      People wouldn't invest in a company building phones in America because their profits just won't compare to those in China. When China has a stagnation of GDP they will begin the exact same issues.

    • @Sophistry0001
      @Sophistry0001 6 років тому +2

      scwirpeo exactly, that was kinda my point. All those things together would mean a product is many times more expensive to be made in America. It would be something of a novelty.

    • @DarDarBinks1986
      @DarDarBinks1986 6 років тому +9

      WHY? It'd still be cheaper and easier to make those phones in China than the U.S. Those old jobs can never return here. They're GONE FOR GOOD. China has unique advantages that America cannot recreate and never will. It's not as simple as "China beat America and took yer jerbs" but China does excel at certain types of manufacturing. And even if we made some phones in America, it wouldn't matter. We already make more goods now than we did 50 years ago because we automated all those old jobs. GM still makes cars in the States but they only need a quarter of the workers it took to produce the same output before. It's not just manufacturing jobs that got automated. Video stores died when Netflix and other sites came along. Bank tellers have been replaced by ATMs. Sears, Kmart, Radio Shack, and other stores have given way to online shopping. Even lawyers and accountants have been replaced by apps and software. Goods are worth less than services today. Your smartphone isn't really worth all that much. But the services that go into making the phone--programming, marketing, design work--are worth much more than the phone itself and we do all that work here in the U.S. Instead of trying to undo the last half-century of technological progress and go back to a romanticized past that never was, the politicians should have focused on making public college free and preparing Americans so they could access these new jobs.

    Conditions are getting better for workers under the current administration. As the GDP levels off, there's a growing middle class in China looking to purchase locally. Companies like Huawei and Xiaomi are leading the pack. Earlier this year Xi Jinping stated that he wants to prioritize EVs in the Chinese market. Chinese companies already have a monopoly on the batteries and most of the components that go into making EVs, so they could easily manufacture low-cost EVs and sell them internationally -just like Japanese automakers did in the 70s during the gas crisis. American companies are so tied to the oil industry that focusing entirely on EVs would destroy the economy. The only thing the US could do to stabilize the situation is force a trade war and hopefully bring back manufacturing jobs to the US. This won't work for very long though, because people will start to see technology improve in China while the US will be stuck relying on old machinery. China's trading network is growing with the new silk road, and the US's is collapsing in on itself. As GDP per capita grows, living standards will improve.

Worse working conditions, along with lower wages, makes an area very attractive to a company, as they don’t have to pay more to produce their product. Like Japan high value physically small goods could be shipped to Western markets inexpensively from China...karea Samsung followed this course from this japanise model...the problem is Europe would not allow state subsidies so lost out whilst the US had inefficent state subsidies through the tax system which tech companies exploited whilst transfering production to China....now you know why trump is rebalancing the China trade agreements

    It's cheap SKILLED labor with a full logistic chain. You can argue there are countries that have cheaper, and I agree. But far as electronics goes, a easily accessible, large quantities of skilled labor is normally what the company is looking for during manufacturing. A full logistic chain also greatly reduce cost.

    I'd be willing to pay more for electronics made responsibly. That includes using more eco-friendly processes and fair labor standards. That being said, I'm sure I wouldn't have to pay much more if, in addition, the owners of said companies weren't as greedy with their bonuses and ludicrous paygrades.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 6 років тому +25

      Some of those things you mentioned are under attack in the USA right now with the current adminsitration. Trump wants to get rid of a lot of pollution regulations for example. Lest we not forget the recent abhorent acts of taking children from their parents at the boarder and putting them in cages and actually losing track of some of them.

    • @Amokra
      @Amokra 6 років тому +5

      @TalesOfWar The pollution regulations are ones that most countries are not requiring of themselves or have been proven as not working or if they are the work they do is not cost effective and need to be re-looked at for better cost/effeciveness (which is not a bad thing)
      The immigration work was worse under Obama which is where most of the photos use were from and OSHA does check on all of the facilities one of which was just recently shown while the lost children were from relatives and guardians not Bringing them Back to the Mandatory check-ins

    • @couldbebetter7187
      @couldbebetter7187 6 років тому +22

      Actually China is bringing in very strong pollution laws. They already have several in place in major cities, just look up how to own a car in Beijing or Shanghai and you will see how strict they are. There are also thousands of rent a electric car stations around the country which you just rent for a day using an app. Sollar, wind and nuclear power stations are also becoming the most common ways to produce energy in China. In the UK we have just built another coal burning plant... UK sucks right now
