    • @lichipong
      @lichipong 7 років тому +18

      The paint would be too sticky and would jam the outlet of the thrower after a few doze
      But, nice try and worth a try tho

      You mix the paint 50/50 with paint thinner or rubbing alcohol so it doesn't jam up the extinguisher, it also makes the paint extra drippy and a lot of graffiti artists like that.

    That white plastic tube you pulled out with the valve and dip tube is intended to stay in place. That's what tells you how high the water level is. You fill with water until that tube makes it back up and overflow; you now have your 2½ gallons of water and you have space for enough air to spray that water. Then you close up and pressurize with air. All of the extinguishers of this type that I've ever handled had a standard Schrader valve, so if you had a tire inflator and 100 psi, you were good to recharge the extinguisher. Making an extinguiser without that valve, forcing you to fill through the hose, is a cheap trick.

    The most hazardous part of this contraption is the uncontrolled fire at the tip. Better to mount some sort of igniter you can trigger with the aiming hand - like a BIC barbecue lighter or a butane cigar torch or something that lights or extinguishes the pilot flame quickly and reliably.

    Curious, was there any danger of it sucking in the flame? I know with aerosol cans this is a common thing, and can lead to some pretty tragic explosions. I'm sort of assuming the extinguisher valve works differently.? Not that I'm looking to make a flame thrower, but I have some military sons who would probably try this given half a chance.

    I'm a fire equipment technician and have an abundance of condemned extinguishers so I'm excited to start burning some weeds hahah. These extinguishers have a hydrostatic pressure test range and as long as you stay under you can pressurize it a lot more than the 100 or 195 psi range they are rated for. Also compressed air is not a good idea, for obvious reasons.

    That's called a "watering can" and are refillable. We use them all the time in the fire service. Fyi if you're using them the right way that white collar he pulled out is supposed to stay in the cylinder to prevent over filling of the water, there needs to be space left in the can to allow for enough compressed air to be charged in the cylinder for a steady water stream. They are designed to be recharged with compressed air, I believe its somewhere around 105 psi

    I‘d recommend pressurizing with CO2 or Nitrogen to reduce the risk of compression ignition.

    Yeah I wouldn’t recommend gasoline. Tiki torch fuel works really well! Diesel or kerosene are also great options.
