It's going to be very interesting when the full cost of the rail and government employee underfunded pensions and other expenses come due. We will owe a lot of money. It will be very interesting to watch.

Wow. Apparently no public participation from the start, only when disaster struck. I see this all the time in Thailand where I work as a journalist, but in the US? E-government that made transport infrastructure project records public, after which they were studied and monitored by University of Hawaii faculty and students would be real world learning of immediate value to community.

Thanks for encouraging words :) Hope to complete research on social movements in Hawaii next semester. Indigenous land tenure using your great interviews is next article in my impromptu blog: islandhistoryhawaiiphilippines.blogspot.com/

Complete lack of public participation in government decision-making, especially transportation issues, is continual theme in Thailand, even today's news has relocation of Bangkok's eastern bus station in the news, paradoxically due a lack of any news from government decision-makers and planners, but before irreversible decisions are made is the time for news: www.bangkokpost.com/learning/advanced/1286363/ekamai-bus-station-move-public-left-out-of-decision-again

Well what was dishonest about the rail was the way they presented it to the public to get it passed by the voters. They said it was a traffic abatement tool. It never was. Its a pro growth development tool. No one talked about the real benefits of rail. The benefit goes majorly to the developers of the future who will build condos and shoping along the rail line and stops. The end result is the 20 mile rail line will bring more population growth and traffic then its estimated total population usage. Thats the crime.
The rail was built as a symbol to outside money that honolulu is no longer backwards and a modern U.S city. Come build and invest.

ONE OF THE ABSOLUTE WORST PROJECTS EVER!!! THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY MORE TAX DOLLARS TAKEN FROM RESIDENTS HARD EARNED MONEY. THIS WAS SUCH A LUDICROUS IDEA FROM THE START. THE CREATOR OF THIS PROJECT WAS OUT OF HIS MIND. AND SO ARE SUPPORTERS OF THIS IDIOTIC IDEA

Has anyone attempted to do a FOIA in lieu of a forensic audit to pin down where the money has gone? If not, why not?
