I will never forget my patient telling me “you’re just the nurse, I want the doctor to put in my IV.” So I walked my happy butt to the hall to get the hospitalist rounding, and told him his patient wanted him to put an IV. I gathered all the supplies for him and went into the room. The look on the doctor and patient’s face when the doctor was explaining he had never actually placed an IV before sent me to the moon!

“ Just a nurse....” Ha! I’ve been a labor and delivery/ NICU/ Resuscitation nurse for 23 years. Our obstetricians and pediatricians are busy seeing patients in office. Meanwhile, we are monitoring every beat of a fetal heart rate tracing, racing a patient to the OR for a crash C-section, stabilizing a patient with severe range high blood pressures, grieving with parents who lose their baby, inserting IV’s into a newborn’s umbilical vein and breathing for him/her to keep them alive, dealing with dad’s who are not sure about signing paternity, working with moms struggling with addiction and giving them hope while their babies fight through withdrawal, teaching new parents how to feed and care for their newborns all the while wearing scrubs with hot plastic gowns, face shields and masks, sweating out a liter, holding our bladders while we empty someone else’s and doing it all with deep empathy, caring and professionalism. Yep, I’m “ Just a Nurse”!!!!

I'm a student nurse getting ready to clock out at 0700 after a 12hr shift. I look up and there is a sea of residents following one of our most respected MDs (and faculty at the Med School). I hear him say: 1) If you're smart, you'll ask your nurse 100 questions a shift 2) Listen to your nurses; they know more than you 3) It's ok--and encouraged--to ask your nurses for advise. ;)

    • @Katrn30

VERY FEW Hospitals do much for CNA's during Hospital week in May, so for 2 years I took photos of us CNA's & made a Poster, Decorated it w/their Life Away from work Phrases & WHY they became one. It was Well Received by both Staff & Patients/families.. It was Posted on our Unit so Recovering pts ambulating the halls could read & Identify who their CNA was. I believe if I received anything & was Celebrated for CNA Week it was while working in the Nursing home. Hospitals don't really do anything for them. Congrats to U for a VERY Important Job.. I'm an "old" nurse...going on 28 years. I have gone from delivering babies to working in hospice to now in research...there are so many options for nurses. I started with a "diploma" of nursing and am now working on my masters degree in nursing informatics. Whatever stage of life you are in, there is an avenue in nursing that will be a good fit. I no longer desire to be a bedside nurse, which was the majority of my career, but I still love being a nurse.

You're so right about not assuming that you know what you want to do! I worked for ten years as a medical assistant in pediatrics, and when I finally decided to go to nursing school for my LPN I thought for sure that's where I'd end up. After I graduated I took a job at an urgent care because that's what was hiring. I liked it will enough but wanted something else. I eventually ended up in inpatient substance abuse and loved it! I never saw myself working in psych and specifically with addiction but here I am, several years later. I remember thinking when i first took the job that it wouldn't work because I was too warm and squishy. Turns out everyone needs warmth and compassion, ESPECIALLY people who have been forgotten by society. You never know where nursing will take you!

Home Health Hospice nurse here - it is definitely a whole different animal when it comes to home health - hospice. It takes a special person and not everyone/nurse can be a hospice nurse. Prior to Hospice I worked in the OR as a circulator for 6 years working with the Davinci team and I thought that I would be there forever... but I needed a change and I definitely got it going into Hospice. It is a complete 360 from working in the OR. I think that you would be a great hospice nurse. I've been working as a Hospice nurse for the last 2 years and I love it! It has its ups and downs - more ups when I am able to provide the comfort that they need so that they can pass peacefully.

I think nurses do way more than a doctor. When I had my 5 kids my nurses did everything except catch the baby. When I was in the hospital for 5 weeks I saw my doctor and his groupies on rounds and my nurses all the time. When my son was in the nicu for 73 days his nurses kept him alive. So I personally think they should get paid way more than they do.

Im just a nurse who has sacrificed sleep, personal engagements and family time, just to care for patients. I'm just a nurse who has stood toe to toe and nose to nose with surgeons to make sure my patients get the care they need. Im just a nurse who has been screamed at because I'm the easiest one to scream at, thru no fault of my own. Im just a nurse who has cried alone over the loss of your loved one, who has worked while my own family is having surgery just a few ORs away. But you're right, at the end of the day, I'M JUST A NURSE.

My favorite nurses are school nurses. It was wonderful to have a full time nurse at school during the pandemic. They obviously responded to the unique demands of Covid protocols, but my nurse was there for seizure emergencies and other emergent needs.

I get SO DEFENSIVE about stuff like this. Same with people saying they don't want an FNP and that they need a "real doctor". It takes everything in me not to lose it. I love the LPNs I work with and lord knows they are intelligent as hell and I have often gone to them when I have questions! They've been at my facility much longer than I have and have great experience. People don't get it....like families....but when other medical people say derogatory things like this I actually do lose it.

Im a night nurse, and my patients thinks that we nap or have been relaxing. Let me tell you, we wish our patients would sleep, on top of that, yes, our patients still do deteriorate still at night, which we have to monitor and do something about.

I'm an LPN and I'm unable to do IV pushes. I had a Dr. come making rounds and he ordered Lasix IVP Stat. My charge nurse was busy and I drew up the medication and instructed him on how to give the medication. He had no clue. He would also write leg squeezers for SCDs. He was a hoot. I also had a patient once that projectile vomited black coffee ground emesis all over the room, I was freaking out that he had a GI bleed but the smell was off, bloody emesis has a distinct smell, this was sweet. Here I am in the doorway to his room wondering how am I going to get to him and I just happened to ask him what he had eaten. Oreos!! I had to mop my way into his bedside to help him clean up. He had puked everywhere, like he just sprayed the whole room, luckily no roommate. Cleaning up incontinent patient and they fart in your face and I just as sweetly as I can say "aww you're blowing me kisses"! Lol. I'm lucky to have been able to help where I could and to serve as my patients advocate for so many years, unfortunately I had my own health crisis and am disabled now. I worked the night shift almost my whole career and I'm still stuck on a night schedule, much to my husband's disappointment. I've been up all night. Oh well, maybe one day.

I can relate to people not understanding what your job really is. I’m a flight attendant (which is definitely different than nursing!). There is so much going on behind the scenes and in our heads that the public doesn’t know about. A lot of people don’t think of us as first responders, but we are! (Check the department of homeland security!) Great topic!

I watch Greys anatomy and New Amsterdam and that's my major complaint! My favorite thing about being a nurse is all the personal care I get to give my patients. I love primary nursing, it's so rewarding. The listening to their feelings and being there for them is my favorite part. The docs just don't get to have that connection.

Blake! Thank you for the shout out to school nurses! Your summary of their role and characteristics were spot on! I have worked in CIMCU, NIMCU, L&D, Mother-Infant in my 30 year career and school nursing, by far, is the most intense and important work I have done. :) My hubby is also in the B2B sales world! If your husband would like some books by Anthony Iannarino, let me know! Take care! Loving the podcast!

Sooooo true. And when you have a good rapport with the doctors and they know they can trust you and know that you know what you’re talking about they will give a lot of leeway…do it, save the patient’s life, then grab the doc and explain what happened and it’s “oh, no problem, thank you.” Some docs never learn that nurses can make or break them, unfortunately.

I perform CNA tasks in my job but I am more so on the job trained. I think Home Health professionals deserve alot more credit than they get too.

Distributors can't get it to them because they sell out. Sad, because that's MY fav too! My daughter makes them for me with soy, and it's still really good. I know, I know, it's not Oatmilk, but it is tasty that way she makes it.
