The song meaning is for EXOLs and former EXO members. It was composed by Lay, with lyrics written by chen and rap part by chanyeol and because of that you can sense better the emotions they transmitted. Its basically an apology to Exo-l's on everything that happened in 2014 (former members leaving, dating scandals, etc.). The members felt bad and felt that we were hurt after everything happened and they wanted to reassure the fans with this song. This song is really precious to Exo and Exo-l's. Its a song that brings us together and makes us actually become one. WE ARE ONE!

in 2014 and 2015 3 members left from Exo (luhan, kris, tao)- so fans were depressed, scared that exo will disband.. that is why exo created such song- giving promise to their fans (exo-ls) that they will be still there performing for fans!

Promise is a song very close to the hearts of their fans.... Cause they wrote it for the fans... As the group lost 3 members... And they always say "we are one" so this is like their promise that they will never give up on us... And asking us to keep some faith in them... And they promised to stay together.... So this song is special.. Also it was written by the members themselves for us...

As my fellow EXO-Ls said before, this song is so precious for EXO and us EXO-Ls. It shows the bond we have between us. It was written by Lay, he originally wrote the Chinese lyrics and then Chen and Chanyeol wrote the Korean lyrics. You should definitely watch the Chinese version as well, this one is dedicated for the former members after they left (Kris, Luhan, Tao), while the Korean version is dedicated to EXO-Ls. It's basically an apology for the fans for breaking the pomise (they said the 12 of them will be together forever, that means the words WE ARE ONE) and it's a new promise that they will continue for their fans until the end together. They felt so bad for the fans, they thought they hurt us, but in reality they were the ones that were hurt th most..Many fans left them at that time, but they still stayed strong and didn't disband. That's why I love them and appreciate them so much ♡
