    Great to see one of these old classic watches in operation!

    That's the nicest example of a Mickey Mouse watch I've seen. What a great find.

      I will agree, nice example.
      It does show signs that it was worn by the child but must have been kept as a keep sake by this child after they grew out of it.
      Bands on these will only fit the wrist of a small person.

      The small amounts of oil in these, in time, perhaps 20 to 30 years the oil seems to dry up and some will creep away from where it was put.
      When people depended on mechanical watches to keep their life in time, it was common knowledge that you took your watch in once a year to have it serviced.

    • @myqueentitanbug28
      @myqueentitanbug28 2 роки тому +1

      @@jamesmartin5370 thank you for the information. I never knew that a clock or watch like that needed a yearly service. But by doing the services and repairs will that cause the value of a clock or watch to go down?

    • @jamesmartin5370

      The standard for cleaning oiling and inspection is derived from the Railroad Companies.
      They established their own requirements and enforced it through mandatory inspections of each watch of all employees.
      Watches were inspected by an inspector every two weeks and rejected if they varied much more than 30 seconds a week.
      Watches were to be cleaned and oiled once each year.
      Some of the Railroad companies varied slightly on the above but not by much.
      Most people would rather purchase or have a watch around that is functioning.
      Mechanical watches and Clocks can run for a very long time if left un-serviced, its these that show the most wear and need the most repair in the long run, this has a direct effect on their end value.

    So cool! Reminded me of the Mickey Mouse shelf clock that my parents had that would have what I think was supposed to be Mickey saying "wake up", but sounded more like Minnie. It's fantastic that even something made for a kid was still made to be able to be taken apart and repaired. Not much like that today.

      Few have survived in this good of shape,
      I wonder how many kids popped the back off of these things and watched the gears moving around.

    Must be worth a bob or two, as we say in the UK. Like you said, basically a kids' watch and probably had a life expectancy of a couple of years. Well done for bringing it back to life

      As a collector item, yes, its worth a few bobs right now, when they sold new they sold for about $2.60 USD, about $55.00 USD in todays money.

    Firstly, the sounds of clocks ticking renders favorable recollections back to my youth for we had clocks that ticked and chimed. A beautiful trip back. Might I suggest less editing for the subject conjures up a good quantity of interest and showing your labors would add greatly to its content.

      Thanks Bruce,
      I too grew up with clocks in our house.
      At age 12 had an old wooden kitchen clock given to me.
      My dad and I restored the case.
      My dad took the movement to a clockmaker who got the movement in working order.
      It is still ticking keeping time today.

    Could you post your video of the more detailed overhaul as well? I would love to see the process of taking it completely apart and reassembling it from there. I think it would be a very valuable preservation if that were to happen.

    Enjoyed watching. Just bought one off of ebay and it's now undergoing an overhaul. Interesting you mention the screws are "blued". I always thought that was a sign of a higher end watch and not something in a more cheaply made watch with a pin pallet movement.

      Maybe a little off topic, but I'm looking for a decent pocket watch for quite some time now, and learning from your channel the Waltham/ Elgin watches seem to be the thing to buy. The prices of these watches are a little bit above my price range, can you tell me what to look for in a reasonable timekeeping watch? Thank you for keeping the mechanical watches and clocks alive in these digital times!

    • @jamesmartin5370
      @jamesmartin5370  2 роки тому +1

      @@GrutteKlier Since pocket watches are mechanical watches, any design that will cut down friction will improve the time keeping ability.
      Best time keepers will be the ones with the most jewels if watch is set up properly.
      Railroad grade watches were the standard for time keeping back then.
      Each railroad company had their own standards and list for which watches were allowed on their buying list.
      The best time keepers are the ones that fall under the general requirements the railroad companies put out there.
      17 to 21 functional jewels.
      Adjusted to 5 positions.
      Adjusted to temperature.
      Double roller escapement.
      Steel escape wheel vs brass.
      Micrometric regulator helps.
      With the above built in a pocket watch and adjusted it will keep time to within 30 seconds a week if set up properly.
      The farther you move away from the above items so will the variation in seconds of error per week.
      At a minimum the watch should have 7 jewels.
      The more jewels added will cut down on wear and friction and improve its timekeeping ability.

    Not bad for a near 90 year old cheap watch. That pin lever is better than the ones that were to follow. I have worked on those and they are horrible. But you can get them to run fairly well.

      The green corrosion found on it in places indicates years of storage kept it in good shape, its one of the best of these I have seen.
      Owner just wanted it serviced so it could be wound several times a year to keep it going.

      @@jamesmartin5370 One thing about the scaring on the screws; it indicates that the watch had been serviced several times before. Maybe not by the best hands, but it kept the movement clean and in excellent condition.

    I have seen many Micky Mouse watches and all have had the red for the tongue on the dial face off by such a large margin to the point it looks like Mickey is supposed to be wearing red lipstick, as someone who runs a print press it is unbearable seeing such shoddy workmanship on the dial, a small adjustment to the plates would have fixed the issue.

    • @jamesmartin5370
      @jamesmartin5370  Рік тому

      Yes it is quite off the mark.
      In the 1970s I learned to print on a letterpress from the 1888s.
      I can relate to the small adjustment needed to correct different colors on a print, one small adjustment could have corrected 1000s of dials on just one run.
